The study halls and classes where we've caught up on the 'latest' and have found our best times... The doors of Lake Crystal High which open to all of our memories... The draftboard found 2h recruits all ready to serve twelve years in the Intelligence Corps. The first year in Boot Camp were Donald Blasing, Marlene Clausen, Joanne Cook, Freddie Davis, LaVorris Falk, Ina Mae Gappa, Karen Hansen, Richard Hewitt, Carol Howard, Marlene Lewis, Carol Lloyd, Nadine Jenkins, Ronnie Pederson, Pat Peterson, Bill Pritchard, Doug Pritchard, Nola Rasmussen, Annette Roberts, Barbara Rollings, Donald Sharp, Janet Thomas, Darlene Wilkins, Tommy Williams, and Virginia Wrightson. Don and Doug were injured during our first year in action. Janet was the nurses' aide. Missing in action at the end of the year, were Donald Sharp and Annette Roberts. As we were promoted to Corporal, Miss Kelly became our Commanding Officer. Nadene Benton joined our forces here. After a year of getting acquainted with reading and writing under Miss Glasrud, some of us found it hard understanding arithmetic. By our third year as members of the service, we had been promoted to Sergeant under Mrs. Olson. Nola and Ronnie switched to other camps and new to our camp were Betty Sorenson and Marlyn Buss. We became Master Sergeants under C.O. Schweppe. She took one look at us and asked for a transfer to another camp. She was replaced by Mrs. Ashford. Reserve officers drawn in that year were Mary Lou Austin, George Miller, Louis and Ervin heimern, Dennis Welcome, and Dennis Graham. We got our fill of currents and tapioca that year. with our next C.O., Miss Jones, we were promoted to Second Lieutenant. Join- ing our division this year were Mearline Espenson, Cary Johnson, Victor Morris, Roger Jones, Carolyn Roberts, and Martin Jones. One year transfers from another company were Carol Reith, Doyle Krahling, and Larry Nelson. Louis and Ervin went on leave. On our company hike this year in May, it snowed. For action beyond the call of duty during the snow, we were made First Lieutenants under Commanding Officer Williams. Joining the ranks were Merlyn Swedburg and two more one year transfers, Gail Pritchard and Ardis Chapman. Joanne Cook joined the Foreign Legion, while Marlene Clausen went to Camp Ormsby. In our seventh year in the I.C., we were all made Captains. While under the command of Miss Barber, Nadene Benton and Richard Hewitt were exchanged for Donna Mae Dahltorpe and Grace Thomas. We entertained the Senior Officers at Christmas time with a little skit, where an Old Lamp Lighter fell asleep and dreamed about Sugar Plum Fairies, Dutch Dolls, and Little Red Riding Hood. Under Mess Instructor Paulson, Dennis Welcome didn't like the diet, so he trans- ferred. Harry Peterson Joined us, and we began to have trouble with the reveille system. We began our last four years of field action as Lieutenant Colonels under Field Instructor Frier. Due to consolidation of forces, we gained Dale Larson, LeRoy Hoeft, Earle Blackley, Bob Rasmussen, Lenus Thorstad, Lowell Robinson, Lowell Scott, Betty Johnson, Betty Evans, Shirley Gilman, and Carl Fuller. Don Blasing was given the Purple Heart and a half year leave for injury in the Cavalry Division. During this year we lost Lowell Scott and Marlene Lewis who went A.W.O.L. Dale and LeRoy took a furlough. Betty Johnson, Betty Evans, and Shirley Gilman chose another outfit to work for. ' As full fledged Colonels under C.O. Martin, Louis returned from leave and Ervin Deserted. Freddie decided he would HSkip over the hill,U too. This was the first year we bettered the outfit by figuring how to get in after taps without getting caught We've become very adept at it, too. As Lieutenant Generals we gave a banquet for the Major Generals under the leader- ship of Miss Luck. This year some of us spent time in the guard house because of going A.W.O.L. Our new replacement was Bill Griffis. Again we entertained troops with, HThe Doctor In Spite of Himself.n Our last hitch in the Army was served under C.O. Madson. LeRoy and Dale came back from their leave and Doris Powell joined our forces. Being so successful with entertaining in the past, we again volunteered with HGeorge Washington Slept Here.U This year we had a series of parties and suppers. Earle and Bill Made The Five Star General Rank, while the rest of us received our Honorable Discharges. Some of us plan on re-enlisting while others are going to remain civilians. 16 9'-N 1 1 ww K wb QZUMA .v fW.,ffl f H First row: H. Siemens, C. Olston, C. Lyon, T. Thorstad, J. Johnson, J. Mrotz, A. They also found that the Juniors are extremely important in such extra-curricular activites as FHA, FFA, and sports, and participating in such activities takes up a lot of time. Spring brings the annual Jr.-Sr. Banquet, and with it the weeks of planning, ordering, and decorating, so by the end of the year, the Juniors are quite willing to become Seniors! 1 E I First row: P. I M , F A' v 0 im 1, . High School Band The band, under the direction of Mr. Herman, is probably the most active organization in our school, They start the year by appearing at all home football games and close it by playing for commencement or by taking part in the Memorial Day program, depending upon which is last in the year's activities. In between these dates there are numerous appearances at basket-ball games and tournaments, concerts, contests, parades, and special ev- ents, such as our corner stone lay- ing this year. In addition to this several members are busy appearing as soloists or in small ensembles on various programs and in the conf tests. The band does not rest during the summer, howeverg they play a series of ten concerts in the park besides out -of- town appearances. Last summer these included the Lions Club Convention Parade in Minneapolis, a celebration and par- ade in Mapleton and the Blue Earth County Fair. It is quite evident that the band members are a busy group, but enjoy their work and take a good deal of pride in making every app- earance a top performance. The primary aim of the Future Farmers of America is the development of agricultural leadership, cooperation, and citizenship. The boys in the Lake Crystal chapter generally start out with three projects, a major, a minor, and a con- tributory. The Lake Crystal chapter is very active,send1ng the boys and their teams to many conventions where we have shown among the top. This year, five chapter officers went to Kansas City, Missouri to the state convention, where President Eisenhower spoke on the importance of agriculture in the United States. The FFA sponsors an annual FFA banquet and crop show. This year it was held March ll, at the school. The local business men donated money to be awarded to the winners in their exhibits and they also receive ribbons. 32 First row: C. Olston, M. Espenson, S. Gilbertson, N. Jenkins, M. Roberts, C.
