SECTIONAL WlNNERS The Lake City Eagles made a glorious come-back into the basketball world, finish- d T start the ing s victorious season with only six defeats out of 25 games playe . o th Tvln ball of success rolling, the speedy little Eagles became runners-up in both e u Lakes Conference and in the Coon Valley Conference. But the Eagles wouldn't give up and after a long hard battle won their way to the Calhoun County Championship by de- feating Pomeroy, the defending champions of '45, and then Manson, ln e battle which ' P k d and wentto had spectators holding their breath. Practically all ol the town pac e up see the County Tournament game. lt was s neck and neck battle all the way, but the de- t 1 d irit of the Eagles was behind them and pushed them to s 47-40 victory over erm ne sp Manson. Eddie Squires' famous hook-shot in the last few seconds of the game set the ' f th U me Eagles ahead, and they managed to stay ahead to the end o e ga . The town was even prouder of the Eagles when they made their appearance at the Sectional Tournament an: wlth their team work captured the SSCUlODP1 Crown by defeat - ing Carroll. This placed us ln line for the District Championship. It seemed as though fate was not with tfe Eagles ln the District Tournament and they lost to Ida Grove. lt was the leadership and ability of Coach Noel Jones that carried the boys through in the toughest parts of the game, and that, in America, is what makes sportsmanship so great. Th first team consisted of tall Don Allen playing centerg Ed Squires, the only e senior on the team, Pete Savage, s fast ball handler, and Chuck O'Connor, a promising sophomore, played guardg Bernie O'Br1en, top scorer of the team, and Gene Rosendshl the relbound getter, played at forward position.

Francis Kelly, Robert Nichols, Melvin Campbell, Don Nicholson, William Patterson, John O'Mara, Ralph Mead, Carl Mathews Front Row: Billie Earrlott, Donald Jorgensen, Richard Nichols, Junior Fergason, Richard Neagle, Loren Hudson, Charles Amsden, ale Madden At the beginning of the 1945 football season, seven letter men reported Tor prac- tice. This was a somewhat higher average than the preceding year, and some good new rookies were added. The boys went into e period of intensive training to meet their first opponent, Manson, with all they could muster, but they received the short end of the scores. Again in their bout with Manning they met powerful opposition, but they did their best to hold down Manning's score. Still more determined, Lake City Eagles fought on and gained oulte a comeback when the souad was victorious over Glidden. This triumph gave them greater confidence to score a second victory, but Audubon had the same idea which made a hard fought game in which Audubon came out ahead. A Homecoming vlctory was their next objective. The old L. C. H. S. spirit was behind them all the way. which pushed them to e glorious victory over Lohrville. The old rivalry with Rockwell City spurred tnem on for the next game. Although both teams fought hard, it seemed that each kept the other from making headway.unt11 finally Lake City scored. Then Rockwell City paid the Eagles in kind. An extra touch - down gave Lake City the hard earned prize. when the Eagles met Scranton, the score board showed several scores ln Scrantcn's favor to Lake C1ty's lone touchdown. The last game caught Lake City in rather poor condition due tc injuries, but the Eagles fought for all they were worth. Two of the All Twin Lakes Conference men were from the fighting Eagles, Edwin Squires, fullback, and Fred Hucka, guard. Manson ---- 26......L.
