Scholastic attainments in rallies, festivals, and contests have been equally outstanding. Such successes come from more than merely good athletes and good students. They derive from the wholehearted support of the entire student body - a support which is the outgrowth of pride in being a part of Lake Charles High School. X The Faculty eats too I9 school days 7 h .4-f '7 The English Classes at Lake Charles High School offer a wide variety of activities. The Junior English classes are primarily concerned with Ameri- can literature. Here a group of students are examining some Horn Books. These models were made by members of the class for exhibition during American Education Week. Among other articles, the students constructed models of stage coaches, some replicas of the more familiar authors' homes, and many other models which pertained to Amer- ican Literature. Pictured at left is a Freshman English class. The students here are listening to one of the floor talks on Ivanhoe, the novel which they study for a maior portion of one six weeks. Much outside in- formation is contributed to the class period through these floor talks. A major part of the Senior Eng- lish classes is theme writing. Here a group of Seniors are reading some articles from the Biggest News of the Week Contest. This contest is a bi-annual event for the Seniors, and last fall the Seniors succeeded in winning the Biggest News Trophy. Along with these themes, the, Senior classes write many others during the school year. Lake Charles High School's language department includes French, Spanish, and Latin. Wie! The French teacher, Mr. Bergeron, conducts his classes entirely in French. The ability to speak the language well is considered equally as im- portant as the ability to write it correctly. Students in the picture are carrying out an assignment at the board by converting English sentences to French. Latin students, in addition to learning the language, devote much time to the study of Latin customs, modes of dress, and styles of archi- tecture. For American Education Week the second- year Latin classes made a model ot Rome. Here a group of students are arranging miniatures of Roman buildings in their proper location. af .. ' i Through reading lessons writ- ten in Spanish, students learn the customs and culture of Spain, Central America, and South America. Second-year Spanish students spend almost all their time with reading lessons of this sort, but the first-year students are concerned chiefly with gram- . mar. A model of Jackson Square 1 constructed by second-year stu- dents added a great deal.of color to the American Education Week exhibit. Pictured is a group of Spanish students working on this proiect and other assignments. ss., The band spends much time practicing their performances for football games. They must prac- tice not only the musical selec- tions to be played during their performance, but also their pre- cision drilling. Above, they are going through their maneuvers for a Friday night drill. In order to graduate, all sen- ior girls must have fifteen hours of home nursing. These classes are taught by the school nurse, Mrs. Rose Spencer. The girls in the picture are taking the pa- tient's pulse and temperature. Pictured is an LCHS chorus class, directed by Mr. Leslie Spinks. This year the chorus presented an operetta, Love Pirates of Hawaii. Nearly every member of the chorus participated. L 1 ' .. --,mx HOME ECCJNCJMICS AND MANUAL ARTS In our Home Economics De- partment and in our Manual Arts Classes, students have a chance to learn many useful things. Home Economics students divide most of their time between cooking and sewing. Taking a cooking course, the girls learn to prepare meals, set the table correctly, and conduct themselves properly at the dinner table. By work- ing in groups, each of these girls has an important part to play in the plan- ning and preparing of meals. . 3 ...gal sr.. ,gh is Raw -ffl'-59' This group of boys is working in the Manual Arts drawing room. They. must put their ideas ac- curately on paper before they can begin building. Many ex- ceptionally well-done products are turned out by these boys, taught by Mr. C. C. Kanoy. A look at the sewing phase of Home Economics reveals a skill equally as important as cooking. After learning the basic stitches of hand sewing and the way to operate sewing machines, these girls are ready to make skirts, dresses, and other pieces of wearing apparel. Their instructor is Mrs. Ruth Burns. X We have a wide variety of histories taught at LCHS, including Civics, World History, and American History. In this picture, a group of Sopho- mores are shown reviewing some facts about the geography of Europe from a large floor map. These students study the history of the world from its beginning up until the present time. Maps and charts play a major role in the teaching of this subiect. World History is a good intro- ductory course to the rest of the histories which a student may take at Lake Charles High School. -'bmw The Senior American History classes also have a weekly paper on current events. They read the paper and then give floor talks on that part which interested them most. This activity gives the students poise in speaking before a group. The students of Ameri- can History are primarily con- cerned with the history of our country, from its founding up until the present day. I The Juniors take Civics as their history course. Pictured here is a class of Junior students reading their weekly papers on current events. This activity is a regular part of the Civics classes and ac- quaintsethe students with the cur- rent events of the day. The Civics pupils also study state history and government in detail. A... SCIENCES Science classes of LCHS include Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and General Science courses. Physics is a very popular elective this year for those students in- terested in learning more about gravity and other practical ap- plications for the industrial and scientific world. Physics offers the students an opportunity to learn many things that have long been mysteries to them. Many experiments are done in the laboratory and, in this process, the student learns by doing. The Biology students do much lab work with the various animals representing many types of ani- mal life. They use microscopes to observe the minute portions of the animals which they dissect. The biology students also have formed a Biology Club which sponsors field trips and carries out other activities of interest to biology students. M v I 1' stgi A maior portion of the time of the chemistry class is taken up in the laboratory, where each stu- dent has a chance to perform ex- periments. The students pictured here are working on an experi- ment to produce hydrogen. The students seem to enioy this part of the class very much because they are on their own. COMMERCE We have a very efficient Commerce Department at LCHS including typing, shorthand, and bookkeeping. Shorthand is an essential course to anyone whose future will involve sec- cretarial work. Shorthand students learn to take dictation at a very rapid rate by using symbols to represent letters and words. It is necessary for a student to take typing before he may take shorthand, since shorthand notes must be turned into typed copy. Being able to type is a skill very bene- ficial to most upperclassmen. A stu- dent's typing ability is determined by speed tests, which the student in the picture is taking. Accuracy, however, is iust as important as speed. Thus, a typing student's grade is computed by subtracting the number of errors from the number of words he types per minute. Nearly every LCHS student learns to type before he graduates. 1 . Bookkeeping is a Senior subject taken by those interested in go- ing into the business world. Be- sides gaining a workable knowl- edge of bookkeeping, students also learn to operate adding ma- chines and ditto machines. Mr. Abadie is bookkeeping instructor. 1 ft? du M There are five branches of Mathematics at LCHS, Pictured at right is a group of plane geometry students. They have many models of geometric figures which they use to make the class more interesting. These models were made by members of the class and are used by the teacher to explain any difficulty the students may have. Algebra, Plane Geometry, Solid Geometry, Trigonometry, and General Mathematics Pictured here is a group of Juniors in an algebra class. This scene is particularly common to all classes-that of taking tests. Tests are not all that is done, though. Students are given a chance to write problems on the board, and then have an open discussion if there is any need for it. Algebra teaches the stu- dent a systematic way of think- ing and is a good introduction for the following years of math. Solid geometry is a Senior math subject. The students make many models which help them a great deal in visualizing the many ob- iects which are portrayed in three dimensions. These models are assigned as class proiects, and many interesting and unique articles are made. student holly A W, A 2 ew w'ifQiwgz2,w fh LEW I - - 3 I E s-113111-f is'-'s,.-5.-f'-w-'. The Lake Charles High School Kilties were organized in 1939 under the direction of Miss Beatrice Field, who is now Director of Alumni Activities at Tulane Uni- versity. The original squad was composed of only sixty members with a drum corps of four members. ln l942, Miss lris Murphy became Kiltie director and has held this position for the past twelve years. ln l945, the Kiltie organization membership was increased to a marching squad of lO4 and the drum corps was increased to 26 members. The Kilties also received new uniforms of the MacDuff clan, featuring the school colors of red and blue. A member of the Kilties must maintain a C average and must qualify in character, service, and marching ability. The Kilties have participated in drives for such organizations as the VFW, the Lion's Club, and the polio and tuberculosis foundations. Traveling is always an enioyable part of any Kiltie's time. In 1949, the Kilties performed during the half-time at the Sugar Bowl. The Kilties have also performed at the International Rice Festival in Crowley.
