The staff has eavored to show all phases of school life, and it is their hope that each owner of a 1953 Catalog will, now and in future years, find pleasure in reliving, through memory, that first year at the New Lake Charles High School. ) Tfi ' •:iS Contents ' Dedication Over a period of years, which is as long as the time that most of the members of the Catalog staff have been in school, a group of outstanding Lake Charles citizens have been making plans for a bigger and better Lake Charles High School. These persons spent long hours of their own time working with architects and contractors on plans for remodeling. Acceptable plans finally were agreed upon, and remoled- ing began. Then came the catastrophe of the fire, which destroyed our Alma Mater and entailed for these planners many more extra days, weeks, and months of labor. Out of the innumerable trials, vicissitudes, and headaches which inevitably accompany the planning and construction of any new build- ing, there emerged the new and beautiful Lake Charles High School, of which all Wildcats are justifiably proud. To those six persons. Superintendent G. W. Ford and the five mem- bers of the Lake Charles City School Board— Mr. Mark Wentz, Mr. Frank Field, Dr. H. B. Hewett, Mr. George Hines, and Mrs. E. B. Watson— who have so generously and graciously devoted so much of their time and effort to the conception and the execution of our building, the Catalog Staff of 1952-53 proudly and gratefully dedicates this yearbook. 4dmmstmti0fi From left to right: Mr. George B. Seniors sit in the front, then the Juniors, then the Sophomores. The Freshmen sit in the balcony. The Seniors have the privilege of leaving first. A Junior English Class, taught by Mrs. Elizabeth Sanger, Is being given instructions on how to write an autobiography, a yearly assignment for all Juniors. Charles Mackey is explaining Latin verbs to a first-year class, while Carolyn Corley and Miss Iris Murphy watch. Spanish students spend much time at the board practicing writ- ing sentences. In this picture are Miss Luci lle Leaton, the Spanish teacher, and Margie Thomson and Shon Castillo. Miss AAarion Lindsay ' s first-year French class is learning to sing Christmas songs in French. The students in the French classes speak only French during the whole class. Miss Lorena Roberts ' plane geom- etry classes work with large-scale drawings to learn this subject. Other teachers of geometry and algebra are Mrs. Kate Gibson, Miss Adene Hurst and Miss Mil- dred Scott. Miss Scott teaches.solid geometry and trigonometry. Nicky Streater is explaining the problem on the board. The drawing was made by Robert Ribbeck. Guidance materials con- cerning colleges and oc- cupations are available to students in the library. Every year Juniors and Seniors have a tv o- weeks ' course on careers. Shown at the guidance table are David Love, Twila Byrd, David Wind- ham and Joan Brignac. Civics and General History at LCHS are taught by AAiss Rachel Norgress, Mr. John Nicosia and AAiss Elaine Tie- man. AAiss Norgress is shovi n explain- ing the branches of the U. The commerce teachers are Miss Helen Wentz and Mr. Harold Abadie. This typing class is tak- ing a timed test. There are two new rooms in the new building for typing, bookkeeping and shorthand. The Home Economics Depart- ment has its quarters in the Arts and Science Building. The girls have a living room-dining room combination, a kitchen, a sewing room and a bedroom. The Home Economics teacher is Mrs. Ruth Burns. AAr. C. C. Kanoy is the Industrial Arts teacher. These boys are in the drav ing room of the depart- ment. This department is also located in the Arts and Science Building. The LCHS Band is shown prac- ticing in the Music Room. The Band is directed by Mr. Russell Cronin. The chorus, directed by Mr. Leslie Spinks, also holds classes in this room. Student Comcil The Student Council is connposed of student representatives elected by their roll calls, Pelican State Delegates, and the four candidates for President of the Council. Its primary purpose is to promote good relations between students and faculty, and to encourage school-wide participation in all worthwhile activities. It sponsors the Frontier Dance, the Homecoming Ball, Wildcat City and a Presidential Election every four years. The Council is also responsible for introducing the faculty to the parents at the first P. T. A. meeting every year. Presidential Slection Every four years the Student Council sponsors a Presidential election. This year, the cannpaign was very intense, and both parties, the Democrats and the Repub- licans, were determined to win. Miss Norgress ' Civics classes began the campaign with an assembly program teaching the students about Presidential Elections. The next day, permanent chair- men of both parties were elected. Charles Ware was chairman of the Democratic Party, and Olive Moss was elected chairman of the Republican Party. On the final day, both parties took part in the assembly program preceding the voting. Speakers for the Democratic party were Charles Ware, the Keynote Speech; Jim Roberts, Domestic Policy; and Herman Sockrider, Foreign Policy. The Republican speakers were Olive Moss, Keynote Speech; Henry Heimendinger, Domestic Policy; and Andy McElveen, Foreign Policy. The final tabulation of the votes revealed a victory for the Ike Republicans, 287-228. Our campaign aroused much interest throughout the city. Four of the six speakers, Mr. Ware, Mr. Roberts, Mr. McElveen and Miss Moss, were invited to speak to the Lions Club. The two parties decorated the gym all week for the climax of the event.
