Now that the time has come to record that personality, the editors confess they have run into difficulty because Lake Champlain has meant many things to different kinds of people, and testimony to her greatness is individual at its best. Thousands of visitors who boarded her in New York, Philadelphia and Boston came to evaluate a wartime investment. They left with a promise that tomorrow contained peace and security for them. That is what the Lake Champlain meant to them. It means the same to us and more. To many American mothers and fathers she was the ship that brought their sons home. And from her four magic carpet runs, she emerged a symbol of our victory with her decks swarming with G.I.s who had just pulled off the biggest job in history. It meant this to us and more. The nation looked over its morning papers when the head- lines told the story of a carrier that had broken the Transatlantic speed record and considered this evidence of American skill and determination. Lake Champlain was commissioned, toldtlis crew that it was our job to learn to live and work together, in order that we be able to fight the ship effectively in the battles that loomed ahead. few knew how near was the final victory, and we 'wercgfgdefjlnitely scheiduled to participate in the next major operation- the initialsinvasionfofihe Japanese homeland. - 'x, J in Our shakedowniiwas completed while the war was still being fought, and wetof Lake Champlain have a justifiable pride in the results we accomplished during that period. We flew more hours, landed, catapulted, and flew off more aircraft, fired more gunnery practices, and steamed more miles than had been accomplished during the shakedown of any previous Essex class carrier. On the basis of our oflicial inspection, Lake Champlain was outstanding in ability to control and repair battle damage. We were ready.. g However, V-J Day found the ship in the Naval Shipyard at Norfolk receiving final material adjustments and stores prior to our schedulgi departure for the Pacific. Under the circumstances, a letdown in your ship spirit might have been expected. Frankly, I feared that the advent of peace might result in an increase in minor disciplinary infractions. Instead, I am proud and happy to say that, even today, ninety-five percent of you have clear conduct records. Nor has any one been able to detect any decrease in your devotion to duty, despite your natural desire to rejoin your families and return to civilian life. Following our shakedown, your courtesy to our quarter million civilian visitors last' September won many friends for U.S.S. Lake Champlain and the United States Navy. Then, when we were assigned to the Magic Carpet, twenty thousand Army men were brought home. On one of these trips, Lake Champlain broke all speed records for an ocean crossing and now holds the Blue Ribbon of the Atlantic. Despite the discomfort and overcrowding, this crew willingly worked many extra hours to ensure the comfort and well being of our Army guests. Although we were scheduled to proceed to the West Coast, the Magic Carpet was destined to be our last task in the active fleet. We are now engaged in the sad task of laying up and preserving this home of ours. Although her service has been moderate, she is just one year old, and is in perfect material condition, economy has dictated the inactiva- tion of the ship. While we cannot but deplore this necessity, we can be glad that the prospects of a lasting and world wide peace are sufficiently rosy to justify this placing of Lake Champlain in a state of suspended animation. V A year ago, during the commissioning' ceremony I stated that, as your commanding officer, I faced the future with pride in this 'mag- nificent ship of ours and confidence in you-its crew. Time has proven that pride and confidence fully justified, for both ship and crew have accomplished efficiently every task assigned them. And if U.S.S. Lake Champlain is ever needed for the combat she never met during this war, I could ask for no higher privilege than to be reassigned as her captain and to be shipmates with you again. Good bye, good luck, and may God bless you. LooAN RAMSEY, Captain, U. S. Navy, Commanding. OUR AIRCRAFT OVER NEW YORK R a We, the plank owners of the Air Department, will never forget the Great Lake. Many of 'us had never had sea duty, and many of those that did, had never gone through a shakedown cruise, but we of the Air Department knew what our assignment was and we did it well. Our records show that we made the most efficient shakedown ever made at that time, breaking many records, and setting a goal for future ships to aim at. v i V Upon commissioning of the U.S.S. LAKE Cl-IAMPLAIN the Air Department was organized into six groups, namely V-1, Flight Division which consisted of arresting gear and catapult men, plane handling crews, whose job was to spot the deck and prepare the machinery for catapulting before the ship was ready to launch the planes 'on their assigned mission, V-2, Maintenance Division, whose job was to keep the planes repaired and in flying condition, V-3, Combat Information Divi- sion, whose job was to keep communication with the planes while in flight and keep up to date, information on the position of the enemy, V-4, Ordnance Division, whose job it was to arm the planes with bombs, rockets, and other ammunition, along with the fueling 'of the aircraft, V-5, Administration Division, whose task was to compile and distribute all data pertaining to the Air Department, along with manning their Flight Quarter Stations, V-6, who were the men that flew the planes, including the Combat Air Crewmen. The Air Department as a whole consisted of approximately 1150 men, commonly known to all other departments as the HAiredales . Along with us were more than one hun- dred planes attached to the ship, which was the work and pride of the uAiredales . ' We did our best to set a record as we set out to prove that we were an efficient aircraft carrier, ready to defend our United States. One of the records taken by us which will especially stand out is the number of landings made by our planes through the co-operation and work of the crew, 3173 landings. Another record was fewer accidents than most ships were having on shakedown cruises. When Flight Quarters were sounded, all hands reported quietly and quickly to their respective stations, which had to be manned efficiently. The various colored uniforms were worn to distinguish one group from another. This was very important, due to the limited amount of space and the deafening sound of airplane engines turning over. The use of these colored uniforms proved to be very effective in contacting men for emergencies and tasks that had to be dealt with promptness and efliciency. In conclusion, we can say, that whether they flew the planes, or sat behind desks, they did their respective tasks so well, that the Great Lake can proudly say it had one of the best crews ever 'assembled on any aircraft carrier. In this final issue of the 4cGreat Lake , may we say that we were honored to have been able to serve aboard a ship with a name as great as the one we are now leaving. Editors, Notex , o The exact figures on Lake Champlain's speed record were as -follows: A DISTANCE OF 3360.3 NAUTICAL MILES AT AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 32.048 KNOTS. HE'S OUT TO SEE THEY H DON'T BLOW UP THE SHIP WATCH OUR SMOKE SCREEN SURE AIM I The Gunnery Department consists of three batteries, 5038, LLOMM, and ZOMM. The five inch, our largest, 40lVllVI and the QOMM, the smallest, sometimes called the uPop Gunn. We have five inch, iquads 4OlVlM and twin mounts of 20lVIlVI, all manned in their time by an efficient and like- able bunch of sailors. ' While on shakedown, there were a large number of sleeves and drones shot down. The sleeves towed by aircraft at various ranges first caught the volleys of our five inchers. The LLOMM and the ZOMM came last. Most of the sleeves were shot down by five inch and QLOMM batteries. However, the drones, or the cflunior Birdmenn :as they are sometimes called, were shot down by our 20MlVI. Everyone had their eyes fixed on one large drone. It made its Mdying swan dive and everyone thought it was destined for the drink, but it hit the cockpit of a plane on the flight deck. T 4 ' We had expert fire control-men setting our directors, checking to see si hts were in to condition, often settin five inch shells for direct h g P g its. c The department was well trained for its duties aboard ship at Newport, R. I. Some of our men were green and some were Mold of the game . But after we left Newport, they matched the skill and efficiency the other departments aboard were crowing about. They also set out to love MThe Champ with the same fervor. As for leaving the Great Lake, the gunnery lads want two punches on their tickets for every one the usky pilot gives to the rest of Ship's company. So long, MChamp - We'll miss you. . P Gnnr ANTI-AIRCRAFT DEFENSE DRILL DOCKING THE GREAT LAKE ' When the Great Lake was commissioned, the responsibility for her care and maintenance became the Hull Department's job. It has been busy since commissioning meeting that responsibility. It has met its work requests, has been ready to repair damage and has insured ships services with effectivenessand speed .. A l When the ship was ordered to the cclVIagic Carpet duty .to return Servicemen from overseas, the Hull Department put its brains and brawn to a tough assignment and ccdid itself up proud . Turning a carrier into a troop transport is no piker's job. The in- stallation of berthing, messing and recreational facilities to accommodate live thousand G.I.s in addition to a largeshipis company was a headache. But the Hull Department set to Work without depleting sick-bay of its aspirin. It saw the ship through four uMagic Carpetie' runs and would like to go on record as having gotten a kick out of everyone. We are now taking the hurdles of inactivation pretty much in our stride. The uChamp becomes the responsibility of the Sixteenth Fleet. We regret saying goodbye to her, for she has been good duty while she has been ours. Candlt Hull PRECISION igation STEERING SMALL The Navigation Department was formed at N ewport, Rhode Island, November 1944, where veterans and boots joined forces to become part of the crew of a new carrier. Since that time, the Great Lake has set for herself a line record of which we can well be proud. Sharing that record is the Navigation Department of U.S.S. LAKE CHAMPLAIN. The Navigators live uaround the clocks . We have seen every major accomplishment of our ship begin and have been on hand to realize its completion. From the bridge we can well judge the success of the ship as a whole. N I One of the Mgang's', toughest assignments was experienced during the ship's record-breaking run, November twenty-second through the twenty-sixth, from Gibraltar to Norfolk, Virginia. During this crossing any deviation from the course or poor handling of thewheel might have slowed the ship down and considerably lessened the chances of breaking the record. It was then the Navigation Department proved itself a cham- pion outfit of a champion ship and a champion Skipper. Without us the ship would never have known what the Gcdopew was. Maybe we didn't always get it first because it often came in code over the air. But we had to put it down correctly or else the ship would never have gotten it at all. And we are very proud of the fact that we got very few udiscrepanciesr' for mistakes in procedure and none at all for errors affecting communica- tion security. s cnow LINE i The Supply Department may not sound like much but it means plenty to the men who are in this particular outfit. We have cherished and held up for what it does from the very kill as We might say. Maybe we weren't so very Well organized right off, but after a few Weeks and months we finallygot together. We found the shakedown successful but kinda rough. All members of Supply Department had to be up and in there before the other divisions are even to be 'thought of. The rest of us will go -' but whenever We think of our service aboard the Great Lake, We express our gratitude for it as a whole. uppl THE MEDICO-ON HAND , The Great Lake's Medical Department has admitted 1,727 men to its Sick List. It has performed fourteen surgical operations in its operating room. One of our most outstanding operations was performed in rough seas - an emergency appendectomy. While the ship rolled and pitched heavily, the shipis surgeon worked cautiously, with his able operating assistants, from among your ship-mates. The ship's speed was reduced - at the end of thirty-eight-minutes the surgeon logged - uAppendectomy performed - condition good upon return from surgery . The Medical Department could wipe the sweat off its brow after the job uwell done . Your Sick Bay accommodates fifty-one patients and has been filled to capacity more than once during our Magic Carpet runs. Our G.I. ship- mates could boast of the best of medical attention and care before they resumed their original status of civilian. Your Medical Department is responsible for healthful conditions aboard the Great Lake. It has inspected the food you have eaten and then has assured its preparation has been worthy of its ship-mates.
