mA ' VLOBILE ENVIRONMENTAL TEAM laHR PRECIII What a living; I set paid to play with balloons. AG3 Morgan launches a weather ballon from the flight deck. Throughout the deployment AGC(AW) Cecil and AGS Morgan kept the Captain and crew informed of what the weather was to be like. Typhoon David, Sept 1997 Weatherman (aka Passenger 57)predicts encounter with Typhoon David. Weather enroute to Japan wasgreat until we caught up with Typhoon David (named after QMC(SW) Evans we think!). For 4 days we transited behind David encountering 12ft seas and winds up to 45 knots. As David became a tropical depression we passed through and arrived in Yokusuka, Japan. Calm seas were the mainstay throughout our transit to and most of our time in the Gulf. The exception was when we encoun- tered a SHAMAL . Three times we en- countered the infamous SHAMAL ' , an Arabic word meaning North Wind . A weather pattern of this type 20-25 knot winds and seas of 8 feet are experienced - quite a contrast to the normally flat Per- sian Gulf Again smooth seas became the norm until we left Perth, Australia; with winds from the south and seaswells up to 12 feet, due to a storm 1,000 miles away, we sustained more rolling than we did with Typhoon David. Leaving Sydney the storm tracks continued to give us 8 to 12 foot swells. Arriving in Hawaii we found the normal rain and cool winter weather. On our way home again we endured the 8 to 15ft swells caused from storms several hundred miles north. SHAMAL. A low pressure system has just passed the North Arabian Gulfand a strong area of high pressure is moving in behind. The reason this phenomena does not happen more often is that the lows normally pass further north over the Caspian Sea aren JJN 8: Desert Duck; SH2 llker ' s wife Rochelle [es birth to Jared Clayton JAN 9: Detach from Battle group; Tough guy RM2 Damian lifts 3 times his body weight to win JAN 10: Transit Strait of Hormuz; Advance clocks -4 Services; Catholic Lav DELTA: Goodbye Gulf JAN 11 Protestant Divine Services; Steel Beach Picnic JAN 12: Captains Call; UNREP USS SACRAMENTt , Commence Command Indoc THE CRUISE 47 aaam
