THE LKC LEGACY LIVES ON ■r CG-57 is the third U.S. Navy ship to honor the name LAKE CHAMPLAIN. The first was a cargo vessel, which served in World War I and the second, an Essex- class aircraft carrier (CV-39), earned one battle star in the Korean War. CV-39 was the recovery ship for this country ' s first manned space fiight, lifting CDR Allen Sheppard and his Mercury Spacecraft, Freedom 7, from the Atlantic Ocean. CV-39 was decommissioned in 1966. The eleventh Aegis cruiser, LAKE CHAMPLAIN (CG-57) has carried on the tradition of excellence by proving time and again that she will be ready when called upon. The officers, chief petty officers and men of LAKE CHAMPLAIN continue to live up to the ship ' s motto: Ingenuity, Daring, and Discipline.
