Best Efforts Throughout school, teachers had asked the students to put forth their best efforts. Once a quarter, Mr. Friend, ninth grade English teacher, asked his students to put forth their best efforts in the form of a single or multiparagraph com- position. Before the students at- tempted to write the paper, Mr. Friend explained the type of com- position, the length, and the sub- ject. The students wrote several rough drafts and, at last the final copy. After the papers had been corrected, Mr. Friend, along with many other English teachers who participated in the “Best Effort Paper Program” took an example of a low, average, and high grade paper to a school wide meeting and discussed teaching methods and ideas.
