,q Reminiscences of the 1935 Basket Ball Team. It had been sixteen long years since Lake Arthur High School had boasted a championship basket ball team. Spark-plugged by Dicky Chap- man and Jack Doland, this proved to be the greatest eam to ever play. Luck seemed to be against us at times, with the exception of the Parish Tournament in which we defeated Elton 49-31. In the uarter finals of Q the District Tournament at Southwestern, we were leading the powerful a Westlake Rams by one point, until the last five seconds of play, when long shot was sunk and that was curtains for us. Incidental y, West- lake went into the finals. In the State Tournament at L.S.U., fate, as well as the mighty Con- verse team, was against us. it was in this Converse game that a rare thing happened - score tied in the closim? seconds of the regular game - ribbl ' h the ball was passed to D. Chapman for a e IH and 'lay-up-s ot' -, by the time the ball reached him it had gone flat in mid-air. Had he made this goal, we would have won: an extra three minutes of play was called and Converse emerged the winner by 36-BU, going on to win the finals and State Championshi in eas fashion. Y D Y This team is believed to be the highest scoring team in the histor of the School, scoring 1,165 points to the opponents' 793 in 29 games played, averaging better than U3 points to opponents' 27. ' ck All-State Dick Chapman scored MMO points followed closely by Ja Doland with 406 for the season, these boys were awarded athletic schol- arships to S.L,i. and John McNeese Colleges respectively. It was with this same group of boys that Six-Man Football was launched in L.A.H.S ' h All in all, Coach Bob Doland said that this was 'the finest bunc of boys' he had ever worked with. -12 . t X 'I G n fxA?
