Marie Blackledge was a member of the Laingsburg Community for 20 years. A mother of five children, Marie was a tireless worker for the system. She helped organize and was chairperson of the Citizens for Quality Education; an organization that replaced the P.T.O. for several years. During this period of time, she was chairperson of the school carnival for five years. Marie was elected to the Laingsburg Board of Education and served until her death in 1983.• During her terra on the board, she became deeply involved in the Title I Program for students in need of special help in reading and math. She organized and was chairperson of the parent advisory council for the Laingsburg Title I Program. Marie served as well as a member of the Board of Directors for Regional Title I Council. Marie was also active in other areas such as Cub Scouts, Band Boosters. Sports Boosters, Lions Club activities . the list goes on and on, and she's accomplished much for this school system as well. Mrs. Clara Marie Blackledge was an outstanding member of this community, and a tremendous help to the school system. Academic Life During the classes there are a number of interesting things to be done too. Students do everything from developing film to building cabinets to reading textbooks. The classes a student decides to take are usually based on their interests. Pre-homecoming was a time of anticipation and hard work. Campaign managers, with the help of the candidates' loyal supporters, spent many long hours designing posters to decorate the walls of LHS. On Friday, the managers distributed pins to LHS students in attempts to receive last minute votes for their candidates. But the best was yet to come... Along with the king and queen candidates and their managers, we had Madonna, Mr. T, and Rev. Otis Pimply join us also. After all the speeches, skits and cheers, it was left to the LHS students to pick this year's 1985 homecoming king and queen. Kin? and Queen Court Representing the juniors on their float that featured Jack and the Bean Stalk landscape were Valerie Matteson, David Sharp, Wendy Torra and Kirk Wurm. (To the right). Riding upon the sophomore float were Alex Coss, Scott Danek, Kristin Fox and Heather Stuht. (Middle right). Chosen by the freshmen to ride on their prize-winning float were Lori Burt, Peggy Kress, Steve Saxton and Mike Shaw. (Bottom right). • — Homecoming each year brings with it the excited football players, the anxious candidates all dressed up, and the frenzied float committees trying to finish by Friday, Oct. 4. During the pep assembly on Friday, September 20, the excitment all began, with the announcement of the king and queen candidates. Four king and four queen candidates were chosen by the senior class. The candidates include Michelle Coryell, Katy Smith, Mary Swarthout and Christine Mitchell running for queen, and running for king the candidates were James Muzzall, Eric Wurm, Mark Schlicher and Joel Mires. After a pause and a drum roll at the game late that night the announcement for the new king and queen came and '84 queen Teresa Burt crowned Katy Smith as her successor. Meanwhile newly appointed king Eric Wurm was receiving congratulations in the pack locker room from his teammates. Everyone worked hard all week long to make that friday night a Fairytale , so even though it did rain a bit, everything went smoothly. • i 10 j Every year, students dedicate many hours into creating the ultimate float to represent their class during the homecoming festivities. This year was no exception. With Fairy Tales as the theme, four unique floats were created. The winning float was the freshmen float, based on Peter Pan. Runners up were the sophomore float, modeled after Hansel and Gretel; Jack and the Beanstalk by the juniors; and The Three Little Pigs by FFA. The traditional homecoming dance was held in the LMS gym. Sponsoring the dance, the senior class requested that the dress code be semi-formal; with guys wearing ties and girls wearing street Length dresses. Dancing music was furnished by Dave Bennett, WMFK disc jockey. Wolves Win! The Wolfpack bounded back from their heartbreaking loss to Fowler to defeat the Fulton Pirates on homecoming night. The powerful Pack pleased the small crowd with a convincing 22-14 victory. The rain put a damper on the game but couldn't keep the players from carrying the spirit associated with homecoming week. « • A Board of Education Administration F acuity Board of Education Board Of Education from left to right: Mr. Robert McCurdy, Treasurer; Mr. Dennis Morrill, President; Mr. Stanley Blackledge, Trustee; Mrs. Jean Cook, Secretary; and Mr. Lawrence Sparkes, Vice President Mrs. Clarice Schocke, Trustee Mr. Art Baker, Trustee Administration -r Principal Mr. Carl Clarke Superintendent Mr. Halsted Beatty Business Manager Mr. Nick DeVault Adult Education Mrs. Kay Nickols • • STAFF Intro to Faculty • I %16« 1985 has been a year for many changes in the faculty: Mrs. Barbara Hodges, the business teacher for 25 years, retired and moved to Florida. The school's newspaper. The Informer, is published by this class monthly. Students are responsible for writing stories, selling ads, taking pictures, and paper layout. Oftentimes, extra hours are spent working on the paper after school and on weekends. The school's yearbook. The Looking Glass, is also created by the Publications staff. Again, the students are responsible for practically all aspects of yearbook production. This includes taking pictures, selling ads, and layout—trimming and pasting. The students who are especially important to the Publications staff include photographer Dan Wheeler, newspaper editor Rose Sayles, and yearbook editor Machelle Boris. The Laingsburg football season was one filled with many exciting moments as they finished with an 8-1 record. The Pack opened the season with an impressive victory over Williamston as QB Greg Hutchings tossed 3 TD passes. The following week the pack defeated Byron with an impressive defensive showing. In their conference opener against P-W the Pack had to come from behind to earn their 3rd consecutive victory of the season. As in the past, the Fowler Eagles handed the Pack their first and only loss of the season as costly mistakes and turnovers hurt the Wolves. Final score Eagles 20, Wolves 9. The Pack quickly rebounded with a 22-14 homecoming victory over Fulton. A strong ground game and a defense led by Glenn King's 12 tackles controlled the Pirates. In their final two conference games the Pack man-handled Portland and crushed the Potterville Vikings. An aerial express led by Greg Hutchings and receivers Kirk Uurm and Jim Shaw proved to be the key to the Pack's trouncing of St. Pats. Ileanwhile in the rain and mud a strong ground game led by Ron Fizzell and Mike Blackledge and a spirited defense led by Glenn King and John Pratt proved to be too much for the Vikings. Pre-Prom Once again the junior class took on the! responsibility of decorating Victor Township Hall for the annual junior senior prom. Tha juniors usually take off the entire school day before the prom to decorate it and only those selected students on proin committee can take part in this yearly ritual. This year's theme, Best of Times , v as carried out by using stars and clouds and many balloons-blue and silver in color. Pictured on this page is Keenia Wheelen in the top left corner preparing the stars to be put up; Melissa Buffington below her stepping up to put up some of the decorations; Gwenda Brandt below holding up the cardbord scenery; and Pot! Gregg,John marsh, and Mike Blackledge on the floor trimming up the paper backdrop to go on the wall. On May 10, Laingsburg High students prepared for the annual junior senior prom held at Victor Township Hall and carried the theme— The Best of Times. Approximately 73 couples attended. The couples ate at different restaurants varying from The Heritage House in Chesaning to several different places in Lansing, such as Mountain Jacks, Red Lobster, and Chi Chi's before the dance. The ladies exhibited an abundant variety of the newest styles in formals. The men were decked out in tuxedos from the Miami Vice collection to the traditional black and white tux. Couples arrived in vehicles ranging from a borrowed Cadillac, or a rented limo, to the family car. The students spent the evening socializing with their friends and teacher-chaperones, or dancing to the music of Odyssey. This year's King Scott Torra, and Queen Mary Swarthout were crowned during the middle of the dance. Julie leads a blind James around the dance floor. Mindy Smith, Chanda Donnan, and Ken Lee.
