1985 LOOKING GLASS - Laingsburg Michigan Introduction.............. Seniors................... Underclassmen............. Staff And Important People Mock Elections............ Clubs And Organizations .... Sports.................... Index .................... ....1 ..16 ..33 ..49 ..58 ..61 ..83 122 The theme of this year's Looking Glass yearbook is Crossroads. Students, teach- ers and administration all face cross- raods and must decide which path to take for their future. As Robert Frost said: I took the one less travelled by and that has made all the difference.11 Which path will we choose? II his year's fads and fashions are to- tally the utmost of the gnarly threads. Basically most kids grpoved on polka dots and pinstripes. The pinstripes are usually found in pants, but polka dots are found in most anything, even shoes. The hot new styles in shoes range from moccasin shoes to preppy style pen- ny loafers. Pumps are all the rage in their wild colors of hot pink, aqua, and any other exotic color you can imagine. The funkiest new style in pants are the ones that look like floods. Better known as cropped pants. Basically any- thing goes in this trend. It's casual for girls to wear mini- skirts. Especially with bobby socks and flats. It depends on the individual or what kind of mood she's in when she gets dressed in the morning. O.P. is another awesome fad this year Most preppies think these shirts are the heaviest thing in town. This years earring styles are like utterly grotesque. They are the biggest and gaudiest things going. Not only large earrings but multipierced ears are in. Sunglasses are another biggie this year. The uudes who wear them are bad. People have always worn sunglasses, but ever since the song Sunglasses at Night came out, the students have thrived on them. r ' n ALL WAY || ears may come and years may go but somethings always stay the same, the question asked by underclassmen •will I make It before going Insane? Dances that last until eleven, being set on the hall fountain. Freshman always carrying books, your homework pile resembles a mountain. Football and pep rallies In the fall, working on your Homecoming float, signing and trading school pictures, ordering your Varsity coat. Open campus, eating up town, sneaking your pop Into the hall. Sophomores copying their drivers ed., skipping class to go Into the Mall. Your Junior year is finally here being out of school Is nice, you sign up for the class field trip even though you've been there twice. Having to live through a curfew, your first falling notice Is mailed, Friday's game Is definitely out, being grounded is worse than jail. Your parents let you take their car, you finally get to drive to school, lunch time you cruise through town, you crash into the police chief's pool. The semesters past by quickly, your Senior year starts to near, enjoying sports, band and note passing, you greet the future with a cheer. II our senior year is finally here, the ACT is in the past, boxes filled with college handouts, our high school years went by fast. Slacking off in all your classes, having gym and art credits waved, knowing you must pass government. Gosh! not a six hour day. Senior Life Cruising together, the radio cranked, a candy bar and pop serve as lunch, eating with your friends on the lawn, sneaking food into class to munch. Counting the days until senior trip, selling candy to raise money, working in the concession stand, hopes of a place warm and sunny. A class vote on where to go. River rafting or the surf? Stuffing in extra ballets, we choose Florida as our turf. Homecoming brought campaign parties, a week full of pesters and pins. Campaigning for your best friends, the speeches made everyone grin. Asking to use your parents' car because your beater will not qo. The midnight movies are real cheap, you take your date to the show. Photocopying off your notes, studying from your best friend's tes£, skipping school without an excuse, doing detention with the rest. Carefree, we enjoy the good times, soon it will be graduation day, choosing a college and career, Good-bye is a hard thing to say. Homecoming ii WflByths and Magic was the theme for Laingsburg's 1984 homecoming. The announcement of the- King and Queen candidates and their court at the pep assembly on September 28, 1984 started the magic flowing. Five King candidates and five Queen candidates were chosen by the Senior class. The court was composed of underclassmen, two boys and two girls from each class. Besides the excitement of Spirit week, homecoming was filled with heavy campaigning by the managers of the candidates. Campaigning started Monday, October 7, 1984. Signs decorated the halls of LHS, as peo- ple shouted for their favorite can- didate. Friday, October 12, 1984 was the final day of the festivities. Peo- ple walked around like billboards, wearing the variety of colorful but- tons. At 2:20 p.m., students assem- bled in the gym to hear the mana- ger's speeches. At 6:30 p.m. on Friday, the home- coming parade left the Middle School parking lot and made its way through downtown Laingsburg for all to see. The freshman float featured a witch using her magic to Stew the Shamrocks. Riding the float were court members Lisa Burt, Jami Shaw, Tim Bolles and Ken Hartig. The sophomores used the Myths and Magic theme into a protrayal of King Arthur's Sword and the Stone. Representing the 10th grade was Car- rie Buss, Lori Chrenka, Jimmy Shaw, and Greg Hutchings. II he winning float was sponsored by the junior class and showed a Knight in wolf's clothing slaying the Shamrock dragon. The court rep- resentatives were Tricia Bradfield, Kris Draggoo, Joel Mires and James Muzzal 1. The Queen candidates all rode in T-top Corvettes. The homecoming victory was no myth as Laingsburg gained 296 yards rushing and 91 yards passing. Brenden Blankenship led the Wolfpack with 99 yards, Tom Castillo added 71 yards for the team and Andy Hamilton ran for 68 yards. Dan Beatty and Scott Shaw split 24 tackles and Dan Austin contributed 9. It was a to- tal team effort said Coach Bauqh- man. 3 The half time ceremonies were held on the football field. Kings and Queens from the past were invi- ted back by the student council. The candidates and the court assembled on the field for the announcing of the 1984 homecoming King and Queen. The crowning of King Ryan Hill and Queen Teresa Burt was performed by the 1983 King and Queen, Mark Robinson and Kim Arthur. Other can- didates were Kelley Rosenquist and Andy Hamilton, Tamara Lee and Tom Castillo, Missy Schieberl and Dan Beatty, Kim Payne and Scott Shaw. Following the game was the home- coming dance sponsored by the senior class. Breaking precedent this year the dance was casual, although many people still dressed formally. Mr. Baughman gave Ryan Hill the homecom- ing football. ■e're up before the birds Cause if we're not we'll be late To start learning new words and having uur debates. Why can't it be like last year?? An extra hour for relaxing? The teachers say Have no fear, you will pass this year. I guess we have to accept the fact Even if some of us are in a daze, A little sleep we all may lack, We'll just have to accept these new ways. There has been a noticeable change in the start of the 1984-85 school year. It is the extended school day. This is not the first time that we have had a six hour day. Back in 1962 through 1974-75 we had six hours of school a day. Then from 1976 to 1983 we went back down to five hours a day of school. Now we're back to the six hours of school a day. In June the registered voters of this community had the chance to vote on the proposal of the extended school day, which passed nearly 3 to 1. At the high school level the students now have 57 minute classes, a 35 minute lunch hour and 3 minutes between class- es. Six Hour Day 15 ■ ii mm mm Dawn of an overcast room And no one saw it coming The end of a race, far forewarned In the form of a meek and distant humming No one knew, how dark things were Though people saw the grey and dis- tant sky Not one person thought or dared infer What a nearer buzzing might imply The sky in its large grey shroud Concealed all but a constant rol- ling thunder Still no one knew, cared, or even wondered None knew or cared Maybe it was just as well When the grey sky turned to orange And the earth fell victim to a firestorm from hell.
