1983-84 Looking Glass l Dedication Reproduction of first high school built in 1884 This 1983-84 edition of the Looking Glass is dedicated to. . . the Laingsburg High School and all of the people who made it possible. The first hinh school on this site was erected 100 years ago, in 1834 at a cost of $5,000.00. With no water or plumbing, there was a little girl's room and a little boy's room on the opposite corners of the’ school's back lot. There were additions to the school and much later, in 1962, a brand new high school was started on the same site. The new building was ready for students in September of 1963 and has been ready fcr school every year since. After 100 years of growing and serving this community, it has become a very busy place in the course of the average school year. Besides the obvious academic features there are many sports, clubs, and activities happening throughout the year. From dances to student slave auctions there's never a lack of things to do. The class of 1987, this year's Freshman, will be this school's 100th graduating class. Laingsburg High School has been involved in much of this town's history and will be remembered by former students and town residents for its contributions to their daily lives. 2 E I::r iportant People....... In the hundred years of L.H.S. there have been many more. From our opening practice at Camp McGregor to our last big victory on parent's night, this was a very special year. Probably the greatest memory is our 7-0 victory over Pewamo-Westphalia. After the game our crowd took over the field and we had a long parade back to Laingsburg. The following week, in front of the largest crowd in Laingsburg history, we dropped our chance to be champions by losing to Fowler, 12-6. It was a year of great emotions; a year of ups and downs. Every year thereafter, up to seventeen Laingsburg students have traveled to Germany as ambassadors of U.S. culture, or alternately German students have visited LHS during the month of April. This August a group of nine left Detroit Metro Aiport for their three week stay in Munich, Austria and Neukirchen. After mountain climbing in Austria, visiting Leichtenstein and the concen- tration camp at Dachau, chaperones Dr. Mrs. Herder, Mike Kienitz, Julie Kienitz, Scott Torra, Michael Malitz, David Herder, Julie Greene and Rusty Foster lived with German families. It determines which class of the Fresh- man, Sophomores, Junior and Senior clas- ses has the most spirit. This year's spirit week included the following events: Penny race, (won by the Juniors); Pie eating contest,(won by the Seniors); Tug-o-war (won by the Jun- iors). Other events consisted of five dif- ferent daily activities, where you would wear a certain type of clothing. Monday was sweat day where everyone wore sweat suits. Tuesday was dress-up day. Wed- nesday was 50's day where everyone would try to simulate the way students looked in the 50's. Thursday was rags to rich- es day, where everyone would wear one dressy article and one raggedy article of clothing, and Friday was red and white day. 103 104 DRIVER EDUCATION Driver Education is the opportunity for all young students to learn driv- mg skills, how to drive properly and safely, and the hazards of driving. Most drivers begin at age 15. The class lasts for 10 weeks, with class- room reading each week, and an addi- tional six practical driving lessons of one hour duration. The students are given tests, both practical and theoretical. If they pass, they are given their permit to drive. You can drive on a permit for 30 days with an adult before taking the test at the Secretary of States Office for your first license. 105 DATING COUPLES WILL 106 rHEY LAST? Dating is very popular among the students in Laingsburg. Dating starts at many differing ages. Some begin to date as early as twelve, but other wait until they are older. Thereare many different activities that LHS students pursue on dates, such as: going to the movies, out to eat, to concerts, basketball or football games, school dances, to Meridian Mall, or just cruising around, staying home watching T.V. or playing cards. Some couples just want to be alone and romantic. Others like to double date and then there is the adventurous blind date. Years ago the guys would have to court women. This was an older form of dating. The men would take women to different school or church activities, to see a movie or on a picnic. They didn't have the many activities we have today, but probably enjoyed each other's company in the same ways we do today. 107 WORLD OF WORK The students at l.aingsburp work at their jobs trying to make and save some money for the future. 109 BEFORE 8:00 AM AND AFTER 2:50 PM 111 HIGH SCHOOL DELICACIES (EATING) 1 One of the earliest restaurants on record was owned by D.B.Lewis in 1875. Sandwiches and short order cooking was served at a recreati on-gameroom In 1926 own- ed by Delbert Thompsons. The first building west of the rail- road was a cafe owned by Bert Griffens that was In the mid 1930's. In 1944 George Palmer built a restaurant at the top of the hill on East Grand River. The Restaurant changes owners and names quite a few times includ- ing Gerties owned by Mrs. Ger- trude Benson and The Barbeque Pit owned by John Hurst. The restaurant is still in business owned by Lorys Mitchell and it's called Lorys’ . FADS AND FASHIONS Pin stripes Tat off sweat shirt Mini Skirts 114 Fashions of the Past Fads and Fashions over the last 100 years have changed a lot. One hundred years ago ladies of moderate means owned three dresses: A best dress, everyday dress, and a house dress with shirtwaists, and skirts to round out the ward- robe. The men wore ckeckered (slacks with argyle socks, but- ton-up shirts with bow ties, and alligator shoes. In the present, most women have from six pair of slacks to 20 pair, and a dress for everyday of the week. Our sweaters are all pastel colors with socks to match. For everyday wear we range from sweatpants to baggies. Lee and Jordache jeans are the high fashion for both male and female. Big earing 115 CANDIDS! ONE LAST LOOK A Look At The Past School conduct has changed over the past 100 years. What's so different though? Here are some quotes from a book called Manners and Conduct which was printed in 1921. Avoid raising your hand when you wish to ask or to answer a question Instead, rise quietly, face your teacher, and wait for her to recognize you as though you were at a club meeting. When you enter your class- room, as well as when you leave it, glance towards your teacher and, if she is' looking, bow pleasantly, And last, Do not loiter or visit in toilet rooms.
