OL “Doorways to Education” z tcC ScUted t6e Settton, ScAooi ?5X DEDICATION To dedicate the result of some human accomplishment to a person is to show appreciation to that person. Some individuals are slow to receive the ac- claim which they justly deserve due to a natural inclination of doing their daily work in a quiet unassuming manner. This type of person wears well in any community. In fact, die longer you know him, the more you appreciate his worth. The Class of 1958 desires to show its appreciation to such a person this year. We, the Class of 1958, are proud to dedicate the 1958 Looking Glass to Mr Leslie Wesner and thus show our gratitude for his quiet, friendly service to the school as a whole and to our class especially. 0 2 FRONT ROW, Lett to Right: Delmar Smith, George Gates, Steve Svvarthout, Charles Cornell, Johnny Durham. Among those who have survived through those thirteen trying years in this school are Jack Smith, Larry Sparkes, John Willard, Sharon Coe, Sharon Willard, Joe Young, Phyllis Brewster, Muriel Canning, John Cribbs, Mike Hamilton, Marilyn Lee, Roy Lee, Loretta Powell, and Janice Austin. In the first grade, Stanley Blackledge, Duane Day, and Helen Bauman joined us. In the second grade Gary Parker entered our class. Under the control of Mrs. Smith in the fourth grade, Kay Copelin, Larry March, and Lee Ann Lange joined us. Mary Knight, Beverly Eltzroth, and Dick Gleason came into our midst in the sixth grade. In the seventh grade and the introduction to Junior High, Linda Putnam and Jack Snyder joined us. That year under the leadership of Mrs. Walsworth, we chose John Cribbs to head our class, Kay Copelin as his assistant, Wanda Crosby as secretary, and Mike Hamilton as keeper of the finances. Under the watchful eye of Mr. Schroeder we picked our eighth grade class officers. They were Stan Blackledge, President; Larry Sparkes, Vice-President; Loretta Powell, Secretary; and Janice Austin, Treasurer. The main class project was paper drives, in which we did fairly well. It was during this year that Kay Shaw, Norma Frank, and Jim Howe entered our class. We blasted off from Jr. High in May of 1954, and landed in High School in September. As we began this year as freshmen, we added seven new members to our space crew. They were JoAnn Coleman, Lucille Atwater, Jerry Willard, Francis Payne, Helen Bauman, Jim Aldrich, and Lois Waltz. With Mr.Wesner, as chief advisor, we elected as space master Dick Gleason. Under him was Stan Blackledge. Judy Mills was chosen to keep our books and Loretta Powell to keep a tab on the finances. Space patrolman was Jerry Willard. Our main money making project this year was candy sales. We then entered our second year in high school. We lost Lucille Atwater, Alex Cole, Pearl Moore and Judy Irwin. They just drifted out into space. Terry Snow was the only one that drifted in. Our advisor was Mr. Adams. Loretta Powell was chosen as big boss and Irma Burley second-in-command. Judy Mills was elected to keep a record of our progress through space and Stan Blackledge the expense. The space policemen consisted of Norma Frank and Roy Lee. Our money making project that year was paper drives. We presented a very successful Hard Times dance and all the space cats were there. That year we also had magazine sales. The high salesmen were Linda Putnam and John Cribbs. During our third year in high school, we were under the supervision of Mr. Bornstein and Mr. O'Toole. We chose Roy Lee as ruler, Judy Mills to serve under him, Elaine Dix was to keep the records straight, and Stan Blackledge was elected as chief money man. Six more of our members drifted into space. They were Gladys Steffen, Nadine Wilson, Dennis Woodmanse, Marilyn Eckelbarger, Donald Able, and Anne Wright. Kay Copelin joined us again after leaving in the eighth. Also coming into our class were Frank Bigford, Clara Mears, and Ruth Ann Robinson. They helped keep the ship on an even keel. We had the basketball concessions and a Thanksgiving dance. We also sold many pen sets. The two main events of our Junior year were putting on the Jr.-Sr. Banquet and the exclusive Prom. Both turned out very nicely. Finally, we had reached our last year. We had succeeded in landing ourselves in the most envied class in school. We were now under the watchful eye of Mr. Doyle, the only teacher who could really crack the whip over the Seniors. By sheer courage he has helped Seniors for the past eleven years to graduate and go on their Senior trip. This year Larry Sparkes was chosen as the almighty President, Jo Ann Coleman as Vice-President, Janice Austin as Secretary, and Loretta Powell as Treasurer. We chose the carnation as our class flower and blue and silver as our class colors. The class motto was WITH THE ROPES OF TH£ PAST WE WILL RING THE BELLS OF THE FUTURE. During ouj Senior year, we sponsored many activities to boost our treasury for the long awaited Senior trip. We sponsored seven dances this year, two of which were orchestra. The slave sale and slave dance were very successful and netted a neat profit. The Seniors also handled the football concessions. To help boost our treasury even further, we put on car washes, candy sales, and sales of notebooks. The class night and commencement exercises were a big success. On the morning of May 23, twenty-nine droopy eyed seniors boarded the bus at 6 a.m. in the morning and traveled along the Ohio and Pennsylvania Turnpike, arriving in Gettysburg where we toured the famous battlefield of the Civil War. We then visited Lauray Caverns and the Skyline Drive on our way to Washington. The class spent five days in Washington visiting all the famous landmarks. We then journeyed on the Philadelphia with three days in New York. On June 7, the tired, but happy class, finally reached our home town of Laingsburg. We, the Class of 1958, wish to thank the Community of Laingsburg for the help and participation in all our class activites. 32 CLASS PROPHECY As I was glancing through my weekly edition of THE SATURDAY EVENING PILLAR, I came across an article which described a town composed solely of the Laingsburg High School Graduating Class of 1958. The article was written by by one of the class, Terry Snow, who had also written the best-selling book of the year entitled ICE FISHING FOR THE INSANE. Having nothing else to do I packed my toothbrush into my 1913 Essex and headed toward this town. Upon arriving I noticed that the town looked very modern. The first store I noticed was a huge camera shop. I brought my car to a halt at the curb. Joe Young and Jerry Willard were the photographers and proprietors. By inspecting their window display I saw that they specialized in double-exposures and indistinct shapshots. I noticed a familiar red and white striped pole down the street. The window of the shop bore the words Smith, Smith, Smith, and Smith, Barber and Pool. I recognized the short, fat, bald, gentleman as Jack Smith. Jack stated that anyone who can beat him in pool received a free haircut. (He had never given any free haircuts.) Next to the barber shop was a new drugstore run by Loretta Powell. She sold me three pills that were guaranteed to cure everything from sore feet to broken fingernails. Her experience at Field's proved to very profitable. My next surprise was seeing asign on a building with the letters L.L.M.A. (Ladies Loud Mouth Association). I stepped inside and there was the President of the club, Sharon Coe, helping Sharon Willard, the treasurer, count the association's funds. I heard applause in the next room and looked in just in time to see the principal speaker of the day, Jim Howe, finishing a speech on Two Wives Are Too Many. Outside once more, I saw a huge truck flash by. On the side it said HAMILTON'S TRUCKING SERVICE: YOU NAME IT, WE HAUL IT. The greasy goon driving the truck was quite a change from the neat Mike of '58. He was hauling a truckload of choice items to the local dump, which was under the supervision of Jack Snyder. Jack was elected to the job because of his superb bookkeeping ability gained in 1958. He informed me that he had the only profit-making dump in this part of the country. The next store on the street was the Look Right Beauty Parlor operated by Beverly Elztroth, Helen Bauman, and Phyllis Brewster. They were experts in the field of dyeing hair. To show their talents they had dyed each other's hair. Beverly's was green, Helen's blue and Phyllis' was a bright shade of purple. They had been in business for over a year and were still awaiting their first customer. Next I approached the local high school. In one of the halls I met Jo Ann Coleman. She told me she liked Physics so well in high school she had decided to become a Physics teacher. She also told me, in confidence, that she was the head of the government project 465-34X (How to win friends and influence men). Ruth Ann Robinson was the school's choral director. This year she had three active members in her chorus; all three the daughters of Lois Waltz. I noticed a man hurrying down one of the corridors with a Press card in his hat. I knew it could be none other than Dick Gleason. Dick said he was the proud owner of a paper which was one half the size of the LAINGS- BURG PRESS. Dick was trying to cut down some of the big words in his vocabulary so that they fit on a page of his paper. He was on his way to interview the head coach of the school, Stanley Blackledge. Stan had the best foot- ball season in the area; 32 losses and 2 wins. I noticed a girl's basketball team practicing on one side of the gym. The coach was none other than Muriel Canning. I couldn't believe my eyes. She was at least 6'2 tall. I talked to her awhile and she told me that Roy Lee was teaching shop in the school and that he and Clara Mears were married. They now are the proud parents of twelve children. I decided to leave town for awhile and drive out into the countryside. Suddenly five pigs ran out into the road. Kay Shaw was chasing them and calling them some rather uncomplimentary names. It seems Agriculture had given Kay a place in life. The local law officer, Larry Sparkes, rode up on his beautiful white horse and gave Kay a ticket for blocking a main highway. Larry's horse was the only one I had ever seen with a light and siren mounted between its ears. Kay also called Larry some uncomplimentary names as he rode away. On the way back into town my car started acting up and finally broke down. I left it beside the road and called Bickford's Taxi Service. Frank arrived after a long period of time. His motto is: SLOW BUT SAFE. I directed him to take me to the nearest garage. The only garage in town was run by Norma Frank and Larry March. Norma had been through Mechanics School and could do everything from grinding valves to replacing oil filters without getting her hands dirty. Larry was an expert in changing tires. It seems this was all he had been allowed to do while working at Woodford's. I found myself running low on cash, so I looked around for a bank. I soon found the most modern looking bank I had ever seen. It was round, the windows and the doors were round, the chairs and all the furniture were also round. Janice Austin was behind the cashier's window. She said she had designed the bank all by herself. I complimented her on her original work and left as fast as I could. On the way back to the garage I noticed a large supermarket. It was called the A P. I thought it was another of the large chain but was soon proven wrong. Glancing through the window I saw Jim Aldrich and Gary Parker doing their best to try to sell Mary Knight a package of fried earthworms garnished with honeyed hornet's tails. Mary said her husband would despise these delicacies worse than he does her own cooking. I noticed a huge lumberyard named Woody Shed, run by John Cribbs. John said the lumber business wasn't too good but he was doing fine in toothpicks and sawdust. The town seemed pretty complete at this point, but I began wondering if it had a doctor. Suddenly I heard a yell from a store down the street. I looked in and saw that John Willard was having a terrible time extracting a tooth from the mouth of Duane Day. After his experience with teeth in Football, John had decided to become a dentist. Duane was wondering if they skipped the chapter on painless dentistry when -lohn was in college. I turned around and almost bumped into Linda Putnam and Kay Copelin. I hardly recognized them. Kay had taken a sudden liking to chocolate covered cherries and had put on about two hundred pounds. Linda's blonde hair had turned white and she had two front teeth missing. They were looking for jobs as secretaries. I guess you need more than ability to take shorthand to find a position as a secretary these days. 1 retrieved my car and headed for the edge of town on my way home. I noticed a small school on the right side of the road. I stopped to investigate. Marilyn Lee and Le Ann Lange were head of classes which specialized in big voices for small people. As the sun sank low in the west I departed from this town. I was a little mixed up after all the confusing events which had taken place during the day. As I looked back through my rear view mirror I saw Larry Sparkes on his big horse, light and siren going full blast chasing some unlucky speeder down Main Street. 33 LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the graduating class of nineteen hundred and fifty-eight, Laingsburg High School, County of Shiawassee, State of Michigan, having been pronounced of rather unsound mind, slow understanding, and poor memory do hereby make this our last will and testament in the form and manner following: FIRST : To Mr. Doyle we express our gratitude andhope next year's class will be as co-operative, as easy to teach, and as willing to work together as ours has been.
