The drum major, Shannon Velarde, helps keep the band in step and assists the Director, Mr. Jones, in leading the band. The spirit and pride of the band has enabled them to receive many awards. Because we work together in practice as well as com- petition, we are able to win awards and recognition, said Carol Healy. Although there are no prerequisities to enter band, the students must have a general knowledge of music. Outside of class, the band members are involved in fund-raising projects such as candy sales and selling field show tickets. We owe our success to our sense of commitment and teamwork, says Keith Ludolph. The most spirited trip that the band will take is the trip in April to the Annual Band Festival. At the Festival, the band will combine with other schools to perform at Magic Mountain and enjoy the park after the concert. The 1986-87 Marching Band continues to perform and prepare for future competitions so that their success will grow. 163

012, Song Hawks Choir is a class where students on campus are provided the opportunity to widen their range of singing ability. They meet daily and perform a variety of songs from classical to modern. Each day they begin with a series of voice warm-ups, and follow the musical scale after dividing into groups according to voice inflection, range and tone. The warm-ups are just as important as the music itself, said Mr. Jones, the Choir Director. Although there are two choirs, concert choir and chamber choir, the two often combine during con- certs. The songs are sung not only in English, but in German, French, Old English and Gaelic. I en- joy singing and like to share my voice with others. Each time I sing I feel like I am giving of myself, and this class gives me the experience I need, said Linda Riggs. A member of the Chamber Choir, Paul Mayjack comments, I hope to enter a career in the performing arts and this class offers a great chance to prepare for it. Both choirs per- form in 4 to 5 concerts a month. Our Christmas performance was especially successful, says Nidia Beltran. Other concerts include competi- tions with other schools, legion competitions and a 4 day trip to Magic Mountain to perform with the band and orchestra in the spring. The choir is a close-knit, talented group of students who enjoy singing. lt's my IifeI said Linda Riggs. 1. Lights, action and SING! 2.
