umanities - V05 Enrichment he class of 1990 will be the first LHHS students to participate in the world famous ln- ternational Baccalaureate program. Honors students who choose to participate as full diploma scholars will study from a balanced curriculum of Humanities, Philosophy, Mathematics, Sciences, participate in charitable and creative projects, and write an original thesis. Full diplomas can earn a year of college credit at many universities throughout the world. Limited participation in the prestigious program is also available. Freshman Humanities, an academic block of English Honors and World Cultures Honors, is a world within itself. The students ex- perience higher education and an increased awareness of their surroundings. The block is designed to prepare the students for both col- lege preparatory courses that they will be tak- ing later in high school as well as college itself. Humanities is interesting and adventurous. There is a lot of extra work involved, but it will pay off, says Stephanie Lichtman. The overload of homework is worth the intellectual stimulation we receive, adds Twyla Sauro. The pressure is high to succeed among these students, but they agree that the daily challenge they meet is worth it. Being in Humanities is an enriching experience that contributes to the well-roundedness of each of us, says Doug Equils. Others add that their involvement in the academic block is cool and exciting. Presented with assignments that go beyond what is commonly expected, the students learn to think on their toes and open their minds .to new possibilities in learn- ing. At times, the students would like the load to be lighter, but the anecdotes that arise seem to compensate. Whenever I feel the amount of homework is too much, I have to stop and laugh. Mr.'TayIor is always making sound effects and jokes, says Jeffrey Cook. Damon Sandler adds, The lectures we sit through don't seem so monotonous with the weird stories Mrs. Lane interjectsf' Overall, Freshman Humanities is a challenge and ad- vantage, and as Sharon Ohadds, it's even fun! 137
