FOOTBALL BOYS September 17-The Lafayette Shamrocks came in last in the first annual Jamboree. In the first quarter, the Shamrocks withstood a violent Central attack to avoid being scored on. C. B. was the only eleven to score on the Irish, accomplishing this feat only once. Benton and Lafayette played on fairly even terms but the Cards had more first downs to win third place in the event. Vic Eaton stood out on offense while Harvey Parker was a stalwart in the line. September 24-The William Chrisman Bears ruined the Coronation of Betty Finney as Miss Sham- rock, running over the Irish 19-0. Lafayette was unable to gain much yardage through the Chrisman line but turned up with a nice passing attack. Eaton and Bob Magnuuson stood out on offense, while Herb Portman and Charlie Thomas looked good on defense. September 30-The Shamrocks, after drawing first blood in the game, succumbed to a second half VVentworth d1'ive in losing 29-7. Bob Magnusson tossed to Harry Clark for the lone Lafayette- tally, and John H-ambrick added the point from placement. October 8-Lafayette looked bad in losing to the Central Indians 27-0. Hesselschwerdt of Central ran 71 yards for a t. d. the first time the Indians touched the ball. The Central outfit scored thrice more in the second quarter and then left the game to their substitutes who played the Shamrocks on even terms through the second half. Thomas, Portman, and Eaton looked best for the Irish. OCf0b9Y' 15-Cl1I'iSfiaI1 BFOUIGFS rolled UD H 26-0 verdict over a fighting Lafayette eleven. C. Bfs power was just too great for the N0ftl1Side SCHOOL Gaylord and Charlie Thomas played superb ball for the Shamrocks, both offensively and defensively. October 22-L21f21YGtf8'S Only win of the year Was an upset over the Maryville Spoofhounds. The touchdown was made when Monte Blue broke through the Maryville line to block a punt and Charlie Tl1OfY18-S, DlaYlHg alert ball, SCOODGG UD the Digskin and dashed 33 yards unmolested. John Hambrick's place kick was the eventual margin of victory. The Spoofhounds scored just prior to the gam-e's end. but Eldon Estes blocked the kick and that was the story, Lafayette 7, Maryville 6. October 29HNorth Kansas City edged the Shamrocks 13-0. It wasn't until the last quarter that the Hornets were able to score. The game was much tighter than the score indicates. November 5-For three quarters the Fighting Irish put up one brilliant goal line stand after another against Benton. It took a safety to drench the Irish spirits. Pete Lopez brought down Charlie Thomas in the end zone and following that, Lafayette fell apart, the final score being 16-0. Charlie Thomas played brilliant defensive ball. November 12-After dropping behind 26-0 at half-time to Rock Port the Lafayette Shamrocks came to life and ran the final score to 26-19. Vic Eaton scored the first Irish t. d. from the 12-yard marker. The last two touchdowns came on passes, one from Magnusson to Oda Fanhauser, and the second from Fankhauser to Magnusson. Hambrick made one placement good. Thomas stood out in the line. November 19-In the season final, Lafayette fell before an Excelsior Springs powerhouse, 24 to 6. Vic Eaton got Lafayette's lone score on a sensational 98-yard jaunt. BASKETBALL SQUAD This year's basketball edition of the Lafayette Shamrocks was the best since the Irish were co-champions of the city league in 1944. It climaxed a lo-ng, uphill fight to get batk on the winning side of the ledger. Lafayette tied with Central for top honors in the Pony Express Conference. They also fin- ished in a tie for second with the Tribe in City League competition. Their inability to beat the Indians kept them from becoming one of the best teams to come out of Lafayette. All loyal Shamrock rooters are, however, proud of this team in amassing a total of 646 points against 563 for the opposition while winning 11 games and losing 10. L On either side of the Siege Perilous they remained for a moment, lifting up the Holy Grail. Then. with the Grail held high between them, they passed from Camelot. From the Siege Peri- lous Galahad rose and followed them, and after him, at a little distance, went Launcelot and the other knights of Arthur. The king himself stood motionless before his throne, and as he listened. there floated back the voice of Galahad. Thus ended the nineteenth presentation of The Holy Grail, annually presented by the stu- dents of Lafayette High School under the direction of Miss VVinifred Gallagher. This year two significant changes were made in this beautiful production. The Nativity scene was moved to the center of the stage and two angels were added to this unforgettable scene. a Also, there were two new altar windows magnificently constructed by Miss Helen McMachen and her art classes.
