GEORGE BLACKWELL as superintendent of the St. Joseph public school system. He has shown untiring inter- est in school activities and with his friendly and gracious manner has gained the respect of teachers, students, and patrons. iii The BOARD OF EDUCATION is composed of a group of men and women who strongly believe that the St. Joseph school system must provide a firm foundation for the lives of future citizens. With untiring efforts they are constantly striving to make improvements in St. Joseph schools. Pictured below: Back Row: Mr. George Blackwell, Mr. E. F. Garvey, Mr. Fairleigh Enright, Mr. R. V. QV? 2 4,150 :V . if Page Four Directors Without the ready advice and friendly co-opera tion of MR. D. H. MURPHY, principal, our high school days might have been very different. He has always listened patiently to even the smallest prob- lems of the pupils and has done his best to help solve them. As long as Mr. Murphy remains at Lafay- ette, it is almost impossible to imagine an unhappy student. if ti' As our vice-principal for the past two years, MR. CLIFFORD HOWARD has Won the reputation of being a capable leader and one who has taken part in our many activi- ties. We are sure that Mr. HoWard's reputation was not achieved Without hard Work. It is hard to imagine a smooth-running school organization without the co-operation of efficient office clerks such as MISS ANNA BERRY and MISS DOROTHY BUSCH. Our advisor to girls will long be remembered for her services, understanding, and helpfulness to many. Besides this position, MISS ANNA HAGUE is sponsoring the Jun- ior Class.-, 'I R JP X. 29 X Wxfadigtured Below: Mr. Clifford Howard Qleftj, Miss Dorothy Busch and Miss Anna Berry fcenterb, Miss Anna Hague pf-il crighfp. Seated: Esther Tarter, Richard Heath, John Nichols, Archie Culp, Jack French, Rosemary Dubach. LAMPION SOCIETY The main feature of the Class of '48 is the induction of the thirteen students into the Lampion Society on April 8, 1948. Lampion is taken from the Greek word lamplin, which means to shine forth, or give light. In order to become a member of the Lampion Society, which was originated in 1941, a senior must be in the upper 10 per cent of his graduating class. This year the average grade had to be 3.17 or above. This is the highest honor a student can receive at Lafayetteg therefore, all of the students strive to reach this goal in their four years of high school. The assembly program, which was presented by the faculty, consisted of: Page Ten Purpose of the Lampion Society ........................,... ,..... 'A' STUDENT SENATE Here is the governing body of Lafayette High School. Although it is a unicameral organization, its H members are elected in the same manner as the , members of Congress. Senators are chosen by mem- bers of the sophomore, junior and senior classes. The sophomore class chooses four, the junior class six, and the senior class eight. Representatives are chosen by third period classrooms. Each third period class chooses one representative to attend the meetings of the Senate and to bring reports back to the class. The student Senate of 1947-1948 was a very successful group, thanks to the public-spirited attitude of its members and to the Wise guidance of its sponsor, Mr. Clifford V. Howard. The band is under the direction of Mr. C. H. Potter. Adding to the appear- ance of our band are seven drum inajorettes: Dixie Banks, Wanda Martin, Charlotte Mc- Coy, Dixie Roberts, Jerelyn Roberts, Jo Ann Rethemeyer, Barbara Stout. C 1947 FOOTBALL SQUAD This year, as always, the Lafayette Shamrocks were a team of hard-fighting, never- say-die, pigskin warriors. Although the Irish eleven had six Varsity lettermen returning for the 1947 season, their main handicap was lack of experience. The team displayed a large amount of power in the early part of the season, but several backfield injuries in mid-season kept them from displaying their full power for the remainder of the games. Their ability to play well in bad weather was outstanding. Their first Victory was won in a downpour, and several of their other games were played in the rain, and snow on muddy and slick fields. The Shamrocks had five straight defeats in their record when they met Rock Port and obtained their best Victory of the season. - 1947 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE Sept, Lafayette William Chrisman 6 Oct, Lafayette Wentworth 0 Oct, Lafayette Central 25 Oct, Lafayette Maur Hill 20 Qct, Lafayette Maryville 13 Oct, Lafayette North Kansas City 38 Nov. BASKETBALL SQUAD Lafayette's basketball squad truly proved that they were the Fighting Irish this season. Although they were outscored in every game but three, their excellent sports- manship was never surpassed by their opponents. The biggest thrill of the season oc- curred When our team beat the city champions on the night that the Champs were awarded their trophy. At the Sub-Regional in Savannah We defeated the Savannah Savages, but bowed to the C. B. H. S. Eagles and to the Central Indians We are expecting great performances from our team next year. Dec. Dec. And in the world, as in the school, I'd say, how fate may change and shift, The prize be sometimes with the fool, The race not always to the swift. The strong may yield, the good may fall, The great man be a vulgar clown, The knave be lifted over all, The kind cast pitilessly down. Come wealth or want, come good or ill, Let young and old accept their part, And bow before the Awful Will, And bear it with an honest heart, Who misses or who wins the prize, Go, lose or conquer as you can 5 But if you fail, or if you rise, Be each, pray God, a gentleman. -William Makepeace Thackeray Page Seventy o e Ts I f -1-vm,..r Y- J , J M I I.
