The Legend of' The Oak ITAN, son of Night and Earth, guardian ol' all things, told ot' his death ten months in advance. l'Ie had his ptople gather twigs and lllilkkt ll basket, I'or he had taught them the arts. The frogg then a creature fair to look upon, with red and white flesh and beautiful eyesg had yet her ugly legs and the sight ot' men with legs more shapely, made her jealous, and wishful to injure them, heuee, when Titan was drinking at a spring, accusing him of her defects of shape, she emptied a eup of hemlock into the water. Titan became ill, dying as he had predicted in the spring with a promise that from the basket containing his ashes, should arise a precious gift to all his children. And while l1is soul went to Olympus, the abode ot' the gods, his mortal part became the Oak. Ile sent a message by Ilermes, the messen- ger ot' the gods, saying, The tree I have given to you with my body is for sustenance of all people and animals and birds. Men may plant its nuts and other great Oaks fl'0Ill these little aeorns shall grow. Seeing the tree great and strong, tl1e people loved and cherished it. YVbile men lived in peace, the great Oak dripped honey and offered them COIllt.OI't. and shelter. Jupiter soon noticed the mighty tree, and there he launched his arrows, the lightning. to warn man when be would express his displeasure at the weakness ot' the luunan raee, for he deemed the Oak worthier and stronger to receive these bolts than any other earth- ly object. YVhen it so happened that greedy woodmen attacked the Oak with saws and axes, the tree only grew bigger and stronger and so, until today, lt remains the object ol' respeet-the emblem ot' strength and power.
