When do you Take oTT your cap? cried one nervous young man. JusT waTch me, answered a more conTidenT Triend. And The march began amidsT an array oT Tlashing cameras. The seniors saT and The boys re- moved Their caps lall excepT The nervous young man and his conTidenT companionl. A sigh oT relieT wenT Through The candidaTes when The speaker, Reverend Bob Brown, said his challenge To youTh would be shorT. A warm round oT applause praised his address. And now we had come Through ThaT rain TogeTher, gowns weT, buT wiTh spiriTs dry. We waiTed nervously Tor The momenT we had pracTiced in vain. AT The end oT a hecTic weelc oT exams, parTies, and good-byes, The class oT l97O was grad- uaTing. Lilce The I7-year cicada, we emerged Trom I7 dormanT years To a new world. Commencing Trom wThaT, graduaTing To whaT? many wondered. NoT ThaT iT wasn'T expecTed, graduaTing some- Time was as ineviTable as inviTaTions and gobs oT grad- uaTion money. Surely, parenTs were pleased, They pro- vided well Tor Their children. BuT whaT was The worTh oT ThaT educaTionf7 ATTer The speeches, The handshalces, The heaT, The runny diploma ink, we each held papers ThaT sTaTed we are wha we are. BeTore graduaTion, we were hardened cynics abouT The end: iT was iusT anoTher sTupid ceremony. Exper- ience TaughT The TruTh, ThaT nosTalgia Touches all.
