Fayette County Teachers Participate Inllll The New Year's tirst change ot season brought a change ot lite to Latayette. A storm had lang been brewing on the edu- cational horizon and on February 2Ist it broke, bringing schools- out reliet tor 3600 Fayette County students and much praise and criticism trom the tax-paying arena tor l.IOO local teachers. That Saturday, the Fayette County Education Assn. voted to tollow the rest ot the state's teachers and cease working-to demonstrate that their demands ot a put-ottish legislature were not merely words. Teachers requested: lll Protessional negotiations that would allow teachers to determine the course ot education in Ken- tucky: l2l Variable, not set, local tax rates to provide more operat- ing revenue tor schoolsq l3l Realistic tringe benetits, granting sick leave, sabbatical leave, and livable retirement pensionsg l4l An increased base salary proportional to the cost ot living tor Ken- tucky teachers. None ot the demands was met. The Week That Was was a paradoxical mixture ot gravity and levity. Teachers, tighting tor lite, worked as much out ot school as in, canvassing tor popular support, attending numerous meetings, writing solicitous letters late at night. Students loated. some tinished homework, all wondered the tate ot spring vaca- tion. Legal wartare ended it all on February 28 with a court injunction that bluntly stated, Back to school. Q -R 8 '.
