America is the land of challenge. The challenge of democracy, the chal- lenge of opportunity, the challenge of cbmpetitionl the challenge of education -all offer the privilege of individual achievement in a land of freedom. As high school students, we face the challenge of knowledge by discover- ing the unknown through science, by exchanging ideas through critical thinking, and by recapturing the past through history. We face the chal- l f extracurricular activities by understanding the importance of team- enge o work and by making new friends. Jobs challenge our growing maturity and . 1 h . fads challenge our sense of conformity in a world of constanty c angmg values. And perhaps, most significant to us now, we face the challenge of the future. School Spirit Challenges Lafayette National Honor Society members work busily on camation corsages for the Bryan Station game. 'N fist 71 --nj, A N. ' X' ,N f,, ., , , . K - j ,Lf ' F Y l xl , .1 H ' 1 gL.J,,f1,.l ' tr- 1. Dummy Defender Sz School spirit challenged Lafayette stu- dents as football season began. Decorated in red, white, and blue the halls echoed the ex- citement of hopeful victory against our cross-county rival Bryan Station. Key Club lynchers hanged a Bryan Sta- tion Defender in effigy to the angry cries of Let7s hang himll' Before a spirited mob of General enthusiasts, Mr. ,lames Ishmael, principal, climbed on the gallows and led the crowd in a school cheer. Mounting rivalry was further evidenced by a dummy Defender in a colorful coiiin, placed in the center hall by the art depart- ment. White carnations with red and blue ribbons sold by the National Honor So- ciety added color to the traditional S'Red, White, and Blue Day when students wear the school colors. of! A 5, Cookie Bent and John Alexander display the tradia tional colors worn on i'Red, White and Blue Day.
