Mathematics is no longer merely one of the three R's. It is of great value in the highly technical world of today. The space program, the output of computers, and the idea of automation, all require the technical skill developed through mathematics. The subjects offered by the math department at L.H.S. are general math, Algebra I, geometry, Algebra II, Senior math, advanced math and trigonometry. Math is not only important because of the knowledge which one gains from the subject matter, but also because it trains a student to utilize his re- sources. i Miss Begnaud checks this student's problem. Speech Leads to Effective Communication i junior debaters prepare for a coming tournament. To be able to stand in front of a crowd and deliver a speech is an accomplishment of which most people would like to boast. Each student at Lafayette High is given an opportunity to develop this skill. The art of being able to transfer one's thoughts and views into verbal expressions is taught in Speech I. The degree to which a student wants to develop his ability depends on him. The department offers more advanced courses, dramatics and debate. In drama the media of self-expression through plays and interpretative reading is explored. In debate a student's mind is made more alert, and he learns to be concise and exact.
