Mr. George Hebert Guidance is an opportunity for a meaningful future, for a well-rounded educa- tion, for understanding oneself, for success. Whether the problem concerns a schedule or is purely personal, Mrs. David and Mr. Hebert tackle it with a purpose to solve. Administering testing programs and filing records of achievements are included in their services. The seniors are especially grateful for their efforts in helping them make the right choices con- cerning an occupation or a college education. The conscientiousness and faithful- ness with which they perform their many services cannot be surpassed. Their assistance is truly worthy of notice and is greatly appreciated by all. Mr. Hebert is always ready to perform a service for a student. l Mrs. David's ability and understanding help many girls through their high school years. E l 4 The Library Opens the Doors to a World of Adventure Miss Lillian Gauthier Aff: fi JL..z'.f fic' MU it Q,fLffL,J Universities acrosg the country were asked what type of student makes the best college material. They overwhelmingly replied, Give us a student who can read. Once a student can read with under- standing, he can conquer any subject. The library at Lafayette High is well equipped for informative reading and pleasure reading. It is in this powerhouse of knowledge that the works of histo- rians, poets, scientists, novelists, and philosophers are stored. This wisdom bound in book form is available to any student who wishes to take advan- tage of the resources. The resourcefulness of the li- brary is due to the competent, well-trained staff, plus the collection, variety, and up-to-dateness of its literature. The realms of adventure, mystery, and discovery are open to any student, while the answers to in- triguing questions are waiting to be uncovered. gm... Grammar is the foundation of a study of English, but by no means is it all. Students are introduced to celebrated authors, taught how to communicate effectively by writing and taught how to comprehend reading selections. With much enthusiasm Mrs. Belle ex- plains a passage in literature. Mrs. Loflin competently instructs her class on the DGSIC principles U. 5...........-. Speech Leads to Effective Communication i junior debaters prepare for a coming tournament. To be able to stand in front of a crowd and deliver a speech is an accomplishment of which most people would like to boast. Each student at Lafayette High is given an opportunity to develop this skill. The art of being able to transfer one's thoughts and views into verbal expressions is taught in Speech I. The degree to which a student wants to develop his ability depends on him. The department offers more advanced courses, dramatics and debate. In drama the media of self-expression through plays and interpretative reading is explored. In debate a student's mind is made more alert, and he learns to be concise and exact. Mathematics is no longer merely one of the three R's. It is of great value in the highly technical world of today. The space program, the output of computers, and the idea of automation, all require the technical skill developed through mathematics. The subjects offered by the math department at L.H.S. are general math, Algebra I, geometry, Algebra II, Senior math, advanced math and trigonometry. Math is not only important because of the knowledge which one gains from the subject matter, but also because it trains a student to utilize his re- sources. i Miss Begnaud checks this student's problem. Concienne Mr. John Guilbeau Because science plays such an important part in our lives in this day and age, a knowledge of science is essential to the well-rounded, well- educated adult. Through the study of science, each student is given an opportunity to investi- gate the wonders of the universe. In general science he will learn the fundamentals and basic facts of many branches of science, in biology he will study the plant and animal kingdoms and the hiunan body. Chemistry includes the study of elements, chemicals, and compoundsg physics, the highest science offered at L.H.S., is the study of matter and motion. In the study of geography, students learn not only about the locations of different places, but also about the people who live there. Civics, which is required in the tenth grade, is the study of our government, and it also includes current affairs. The foreign language department at L.H.S. is concentrating more on the spoken rather than the grammatical languageg however, the correct sen- tence structure 'is mastered by all. Both the French and Spanish students in the past have produced plays for rally in their respective languages. The Latin stu- dents learn about the development of words, and they learn how to translate freely. In each of the language courses, pupils study about the Cultural and historical backgrounds of the people who orig- inated their language. 5 French class is often amusing. 2l Through Understanding . .N Miss Hazel Alpha ,N X Ha me , Cun-fgi,,Woc.c,n1 Miss Alpha demonstrates the use of a pastry press. Mrs. Genoa Carpenter The Home Economics department of Lafayette High offers excellent training to the homemakers of the future. The course is developed so that the students may learn the essentials-cooking, sewing, child care, good grooming, and etiquette. They also gain experience in household du- ties such as meal planning and preparation, buying, and budgeting. Three courses of regular home economics are offered. In addition, a fourth course in home and family living is made available to all seniors. If a person takes advantage of these excellent opportunities to become a well-rounded person, he is surely to get along better in the world. Included in its program are courses in team sports, rhythmics, gymnastics, and track. Also, it offers a four-year course in health. 1 s 24 Enjoying a dancing class. A Language Created by Music The beginners in band practice after school. The music department, consisting of the band, the orchestra, and the cho- rus, is doing an outstanding job here at Lafayette High. The band' has won festival sweepstakes for the past eleven years, and the orchestra has won sweepstakes for four years. Both of these groups are under the skillful direction of Mr. Harry Greig. The chorus is a fast-developing asset to Lafayette High. Mrs. Bienvenu is the director of the freshman, gir1's, boy's and advanced cho- ruses. She also teaches music theory classes. The main goal of Driver's Education is to train students to be safe, competent drivers. During the first six weeks of school, the students are acquainted with the principles of good driving through their class work in which the operation of the engine and defensive driving are stressed. When the class work is completed, each student has two weeks of actual driving under the competent supervision of Mr. Lucien Hebert. When the student completes this phase of the course, he is well equipped to face the many driving situations which he will encounter throughout life. Mr. Hebert stresses the importance of safety belts. Students receive last-minute instructions before getting into the car. Art Yields an Outlet for Self-expression . Mr. Claude Guidroz ,, The study of art gives many students an opportunity for self-expression. In art students learn how to work with clay, oil paints, tempera, and papier-mache. Many art students are called upon to design and build the props and sets for school productions. With Mr. Claude Guidroz at the head of the department, it is no wonder that the Lafayette High Art Department is one of the best anywhere. These favorites are active in extracurricular activities and represent various phases of school life. Each club chooses a sweetheart to represent it at the Miss Merry'Christmas Danceg the entire student body elects the LHS Court, which is composed of both boys and girls. Although the favorites are chosen for different presentations, these students possess definite, out- standing qualities. Among these qualities are spirit, poise, and personality. Not only are these students well liked by their classmates, but they are also highly respected by the faculty. Though they have varied talents and interests, each favorite strives to represent his school in the best way possible. I L I x QR Q' Kiwi, 1' wx, Q, IF M SN ka W if 5iik X .M xx? .. , fe-fx f ff. A team which many thought to be lacking in talent and ability, once aroused, became one of the finest football teams in the history of Lafayette High School. An excellent coaching staff helped to bring the Lions victory after victory, and with pride watched an obscure team become a champion- ship team. Always striving for excellence on the gridiron, the Lions displayed a team spirit and sportsmanship equalled by none. With- out these qualities, the team would never have been undefeated, untied District 2-AAA Champs or State AAA Semi-finalists. The winner of eleven straight games, the 1965 Mighty Lions became the first undefeated team in the history of L.H.S., in addition to being the best defensive team in the state. 132 l Wallace Cox Robert Morris Chockey Kassem Auirtanz Faoiball Cggflg Asiirlani Football Auiriant Football and Barketball and Track Coach Track Coach TOP ROW: Coach Wally Cox, Phil Dismukes, Dave White, Rick Tanner, Ross Brupbacher, Dick White, Coach Al Simon, SECOND ROW: Coach Jack Baker, Charles Moncla, jim Segrest, Mike LeBlanc, Mike Kimbrough, jerry Hutchins, Stan Broussard, james Bugga Powell, Van Himel, Coach Rayford LeBlanc, THIRD ROW: Bryan Fox, David Tidwell, Mike Van Arsclale, John Thomas, Ted Smith, Ronnie Combs, George Coussan, Vernon Dobbs, Tommy Rich, Coach Robert Morris, BOTTOM ROW: Coach Chockey Kassem, Chester Breaux, Raymond Mahfouz, Bob St. Amant, Jimmy White, Bruce Anderson, Tommy Bourque, Harold Cottrell, Donald Aymond, Mike Collins. Lions 14 Bulldogs 7 Lions Ruin Baton Rouge's Hopes From all so-called experts came the forecast of a dismal season for Lafayette's Lions. In the first game of the season the Lions found themselves faced with the 1964 State Champions and number one rated AAA team. The Lions were given little chance to win against the talented Baton Rouge Bulldogs, but teamwork and hustle brought the Lions their first 1965 victory. One of the big factors in the Lions victory was the passing of quarterback George Coussan. George's passes, all of which were caught by sophomore end Raymond Mahfouz, came in key situations and accounted for one of the Mighty Lion's touchdowns. Complementing the passing game was the fine running of halfbacks Mike LeBlanc and Ross Brupbacher. Credit for the victory should also go to the defensive team which turned in a great effort. On the opening kickoff little Bob St. Amant ran for eighty yards and a touchdown. The Lions scored five more times but the damage had already been done. Ross Brupbacher con- tinued the brilliant running which was later to make him an All-American. The entire Lion backfield found huge holes in the Viking line as the Lion's linemen continually blocked out the Northside defenders. George Coussan found the Viking secondary equally as weak as he was able to complete three passes for eighty-three yards. In all it was a very satisfying and impressive victory for Coach Rayford LeBlanc's Mighty Lions! sv in an Green Machine Rolls Over Rebels ..i .Aa -L ow Q M , :Kal Q we ., -.1-X' xy.. - ..- wa w -is 1 was 11 Q A! wi Q rw 4, u K ... ... .. . .. s. The Bears scored in the first quarter to lead the Lions 7-0. But showing the poise of a championship team, the Mighty Lions scored on a three-yard plunge by George Coussan to climax a seventy-three-yard drive. The big play of the night came when Coussan hit end Phil Dismukes on a seven-yard TD pass to complete the scoring for the night.'Mike LeBlanc was the leading rusher with fifty-seven yards followed by Ross Brupbacher with fifty-four yards. An overflow crowd of 7000 people watched as All-American Ross Brupbacher racked up 150 yards rushing. On the first drive the Lions took the ball on their own 58-yard line and moved it to the one-yard line of the Tors with Brupbacher and Mike LeBlanc picking up most of the yardage. Then George Coussan sneaked it over for the score. The extra point was wide and the Lions led 6-0. Then on the kickoff a Tor ran it back 81 yards for the tying score and the extra point was good. The Lions now were behind. But all the power, the hard work, the character and the desire to win was put into the last half as the mighty Lions came from behind and won the district championship. Brupbacher carried the ball down the field some 70 yards in 4 carries and then LeBlanc dove over for the winning score. The game ended 12-7. Mighty Lions Finish Perfect Season Lions 14 Gators 7 LaGrange Gators Swamped by Lions The Mighty Lions finished their season with a perfect 9-0 record and did it with a spectacular victory. For the first time in the history of the school Lafayette won the district crown, beat LaGrange, and was rated number one in the state AAA rankings. An all-star catch by Charlie Moncla handed the Lions a 14-7 victory. The Lions, headed by the running of Ross Brupbacher, Ted Smith, and Mike LeBlanc, were enough to handle the Gators in the first half. But a stout defense which held off the Gators on the two-yard line in the second half saved the Lions from costly and heart-breaking game. Ross Brupbacher scored the first touch- down on a twenty-six yard fumble recovery return. Moncla scored on his great catch and Stan Broussard added both the extra points. Brupbacher scored both touchdowns and was the game's leading rusher with sixty yards in thirteen carries. St. Amant came up with two key interceptions and a fine punting average. Lafayette got its first break with a little less than two minutes left in the first half when the Lee punter got a bad snap from center and was chased back to the one-yard line. Brupbacher hit pay dirt on his first try. Early in the fourth quarter St. Amant intercepted a Lee pass and was downed on the thirty. Brupbacher scored again from the six. B. Cole Lafayette High's MIGHTY LIONS started their basketball season on a dismal note, losing to South Terrebone 63 to 41. Victory after victory followed that first bitter note as the MIGHTY LIONS went on to compile an excellent 29-7 record. As in football, no other team in the history of Lafayette High School had ever managed to win so many games. Lafayette dropped its opening game to Sulphur, a game which cost them the District 2-AAA Championship. After the Sulphur game, the Lions were never quite able to catch the District Champion, Bolton Bears. At the end of the season the Lions were forced to defeat the LaGrange Gators in a playoff to gain a berth in the State AAA Playoffs. The MIGHTY LIONS entered the playoffs having revenged their defeats to South Terrebone, Sulphur, Bolton, and LaGrange. In their first playoff game they revenged another previous loss to the Istrotuna Indians by narrowly defeating the Indians 61 to 60. McDonough High of New Orleans easily fell to the conquering Lions, and it was off to the State Finals in Shreveport. In the semi-finals the MIGHTY LIONS rallied to defeat the St. Aloysius Crusaders and avenge another loss. The finals found the Lions playing a team which they had previously defeated. However, Jesuit of New Orleans came back in the second half to steal the crown from the Lions. The MIGHTY LIONS had once again failed to gain the elusive State Championship. However, nobody would ever forget their outstanding play, their hustle, and their never-say-die attitude. Lafayette's MIGHTY LION track team completely dominated the track scene in Southwest Louisiana in 1966. The Lions won ten of the twelve track meets which they entered, placed second in one, and third in the State AAA trade meet. Highlighting the MIGHTY LION'S track season were victories in the Royal Purple Relays, the Bolton Relays, the Oil City Relays, and the District 2-AAA track meet. In the Royal Purple Relays the Lions took first place over many talented Texas teams, in the Bolton Relays the Lions took first over the State Champion Bolton Bears, in the Oil City Relays the MIGHTY LIONS displayed their abundant, talent before an enthusiastic home crowd, and in the District 2-AAA track meet the MIGHTY LIONS repeated as District Cham- pions. A great deal of credit must go to Coach jack Baker who continually offered encourage- ment to his talented team. Mrs. Breaux aided in the annual school elections. Mrs. Breaux helps in plan- ppreciation of her many fruitful years spent in the teaching profession and of her genuine interest in, and love for, the youth of today, we dedicate this 1966 volume of the Lion's Din to Mrs. Dena Breaux who retired from her teaching career this past May. Mrs. Breaux was an outstanding English teacher for many years. Throughout her tenure at Lafayette High, she encouraged high standards in our school, thus helping to shape and mold the character of hundreds of young people. Our former English faculty member served the school in many ways other than in actual teaching. At various times, she was the sponsor of the Parlez- Vous and of Semper Amici. Up to the time of her retirement, Mrs. Breaux was active in Homecoming activities and in annual school election campaigns. So to you, Mrs. Breaux, we dedicate this 1965-66 Lion's Din, and we say a sincere thank you to a grand teacher and a wonderful person. Mrs. Breaux has helped with numerous extracurricular activities throughout her teaching career. 295 In Advertisements .
