This has been an exciting and busy year for all of us . . . not only for the Lion's Din staff but for each of you as well. While we met editorial deadlines, you met your own particular deadline . . . an English theme . . . a math test . . . a club project. Because we felt that it was a good year, we wanted our Lion's Din to tell the story of a typical year of work and play at Lafayette Senior High with emphasis upon the qualities of character that mark the good student wherever he may be. Believing as we do that students make the school and that a school build- ing itself is only an inanimate mass of bricks and glass, we have pain- stakingly included some of you or your friends or your teachers in as many of our pictures of the school as possible. Even our color page, a new feature this year, portraying a glimpse of the patio, shows students in a moment of relaxation and informal talk. Our duotone pictures of our school as seen inside the buildings would mean little if you were not in them. We sincerely hope that in the '57 Lion's Din you find yourself portrayed in your various activitiesg we hope you find yourself laughing and dream- ing, working and playing, and, if you do, we will feel that we have helped to capture some of the spirit and excitement of a typical year at Lafayette Senior High School. 1957 Lion's Din X n Nwvvvvx M . LANDRY The role which was mine in the selection of your fine school site, the designing and construction of your magnificent school plant, and the naming of your splendid faculty, shall always remain a source of pride to me. But. my dear students, while each of the above is of greatest importance to a school, there remains another factor which is primary in the life, the success and the character of any school-and that is the students. As each of you play your part as a student so will the character and the success of your school be de- termined. That is always a challenge to meet. I think you are meeting that challenge. With the Seniors in the lead, may God always give you the Craces to ever hold high its banner. Sincerely yours, J. C. CLAUDE GUIDROZ, super- visor of the Lafayette High Art Department, prepares to discuss with his class the theory and method of abstract and impression- istic painting. The L.S.H.S. art department offers many and varied courses in art. These include work in water colors, oils, charcoal, pastels, linoleum block printing, molding, ceramics and sculpturing of plaster, wood or any other desirable material. Through this study the students learn to appreciate art, and the school benefits from the services rendered by the department. Many pupils take art not because they are especially talented, but because art offers an opportunity for self expression. Sweethearts in a moment of expectation. await the anounce- ment of this year's Miss Merry Christmas. As Nou-nihcr comes to a close. tension and ex- citcmcnl mount as each class. cluh. and organization prcparcs to sclcct its candidate for Miss Merry Christ- mas. Who will it he? is the big question ringing through the corridors during these days of holly and mistletoe. One cluh announces its sweetheart-then another and another. until all the candidates have heen chosen and the eourt is complete. Thc pictures of the sweethearts are posted in the lohhy. Students crowd around trying to get a glimpse of the girls who will vie for the crown. A few days hefore the big night, students in each home room class vote hy secret hallot for the girl of their choice. The climax comes the night of the Miss Merry Christmas Dance. The votes are counted. and last minute preparations are made. Backstage. the girls gossip among themselves in eager expectation. As the sweethearts are presented, murmurs of Ohs', and AhsH sweep the audience. Then the announcer's voice. filled with excitement. comes over the loud speaker: And now. we are happy to present Miss Merry Christmas of 1957-Miss Molly Le Blanc. Each girl is the belle of the ball as the court dance begins. flrfwr iudenfs As the end of the school year draws near, the faculty selects two outstanding stu- dents from the fifteen fields of study offered in Lafayette Sen- ior High. But awards and honors do not stop with classroom work, for Lafayette Senior High stu- dents distinguish themselves in extracurricular activities as well. All awards are indicative of good character, initiative, and determination to succeed. We are happy to present the 1956-57 outstanding and honor students on the pages that follow.
