LIONS 24-ABBEVILLE 0 Our opening game saw the Lions win over Abbeville in a bang-up game with Rufus Patin, Phil Nugent, Bob Pickering, Rene Delhomme, and Joe Broussard shining. The game was close until the last half of the second quarter, and then the Lions broke loose with full force to win. LIONS I2-LA GRANGE 30 It didn't show on the scoreboard, but the Lions had the best running backfield on rain-drenched Clark Field. It took the galloping of big Rufus Patin, Lafayette fullback to provide the sole consolation in the home opener setback at the hands of favored LaGrange. LIONS 7-BOLTON 33 For our second loss of the season, the Bolton Bears bopped our Lions 33-7. Rufus Patin was all the fans had to cheer about, as he made the only touch- down-a 67 yard dash. LIONS 6-NICHOLS I9 Unbeaten Nicholls of New Orleans unleashed a timely aerial offensive in the first half and a yard- devouring ground attack in the final half to make Lafayette its third straight victim. The set back was the third straight for the Lions. The only touchdown of the game was made through the teamwork of Gene Cella and Rufus Patin. LIONS 0-LAKE CHARLES 34 Coach Louie Whitman's warriors suffering their fourth consecutive defeat actually turned in their best showing of the season and the heavily favored invaders sputtered through the first half as a result of inspired play by the Lions. LIONS 31-JENNINGS I3 The Lions pulled out of the Southwest AAA cellar by downing the Bulldogs and upsetting their home- coming. The win was the second for the Lions. Rufus Patin led the Lafayette team, gaining 'I49 yards and scoring one Lion touchdown. Phil Nugent, Bob Pickering, and Gene Cella were also responsible for the Lion's win. LIONS I2-NEW IBERIA I4 Even though it was the Lion's homecoming the Yellowiackets still managed to win. Poochie Delhomme dashed 34 yards to the Jacket 29, Phil Nugent and Bob Pickering then took over with a 30 yard pass to score the first touchdown of the game. The Lions gained 90 yards on passing and 213 yards on running in a very close game. LIONS 21-CROWLEY O The Lions won a furious game by giving their all against the Gentlemen. Lafayette's break came in the third quarter when Joe Mine blocked a punt. Phil Nugent completed five passes for I5 yards. Rufus Patin, Rene Delhomme, and Gene Cella made a fine showing. LIONS 0-SULPHUR 47 Lafayette's hope for an upset victory over powerful Sulphur disappeared under an avalanche of Golden Tornado touchdowns. The Lion's hopes to catch Sulphur off guard on the weekend before the Tors' meeting with conference co-leader, Lake Charles, weren't ful- filled, and they went down by a one-sided count. LIONS I 9AKERWlN I9 Sparked by the passing of quarterback Phil Nugent and one of the finest broken field runs of the year by halfback Bobby Cabanis, the Lions overcame a two- touchdown deficit to earn a I9-I9 tie with the AAAA Kerwin Buccaneers of Galveston, Texas.
