A New World-a young world, a world of ideals and optimism began with the American Revolution. The young Mar- quis de Lafayette responded by leaving his native France to fight in America. Now 'we, the class of 1966 in the school that bears his name, are involved in a revolution. More than ever before, we are awareof and are involved in a great innovation of ideas. We are the modern phenomenon: a generation of young peo- ple concerned with our destiny and the events which shape it. . Lafayette High ,School has been a mov- ing gear, revolving and inspiring us, each to his own aspirations. Dear Graduates: To say farewell to a senior class always invokes conflicting emotions in me. The fact that you have successfully completed your high school career gives me both joy and satisfaction. The realization that the fine young men and women whom I have gotten to know are leaving fills me with a sense of loss. In the year 1966, you are facing a future filled with many new challenges, some already here and others still to be created by mankind. According to all indica- tions we are now on the threshold of a new era -technologically, socially and eco- nomically. Space satellites, missiles, supersonic jet planes and automatic com- puters will revolutionize our modes of thinking and ways of living. The demand upon human beings will be greater than ever. Many of our civic and military leaders claim that the road to salvation lies in greater scientific knowledge and research. No doubt the world will require people with greater training and more knowledge than ever before. However, it is my considered opinion that the ultimate test of your future happiness will depend not so much upon scientific knowledge as upon those human values, moral principles and habits of work which we at Lafayette have tried to instill in you. There is so much that I wish for you-material success, good health and a happy family life, but, most of all, I hope that you will face each day with courage and integrity. Please remember the words of the Psalmist, Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear . May your future be a happy and successful one! Cordially yours, LEO WEITZ Principal P. S. When you open this book, five years from now, please write me and let me know how you are faring. 4
