JOSEPH BELLAFIO R E Dear Graduates: Congratulations upon your success in completing your high school course of study with a satisfactory record in scholarship, behavior, and citizenship. You have merited graduation by your effort and achievement. In the process of winning a diploma you have also grown up in stature as a person with responsibility for the inheritance of the past and the new horizons for the future. In the declaration at graduation you solemnly promise to help make our school and our city better than you found them. What does the record show about the class of June 1962? You have estab- lished an outstanding record by winning many Regents Scholarships, National Merit Awards and numerous other honors. You produced a prize-winning SING and an outstanding dramatic production. In the field of sports you had a championship team in basketball and soccer. You were the first to play a basketball game on television. Among the various firsts which took place during your senior year, you were the first class to have a foreign language laboratory and the first to produce a foreign language television broadcast. Your diploma is the first to be granted by the new Board of Education of the City of New York. I hope you have many other ibemonal lirstr to make 1962 memorable in your life. You have learned many lessons, but most important are the worthwhile habits, attitudes, ideals, and aspirations that will govern your daily actions. We hope and pray that you will always show your loyalty to God and country, to your school and family. W'hether you go to a higher institution of learning, to a business school, or a job, you will represent all of us at Lafayette High School. We are proud of you! Live up to our great expectations for you. Sincerely yours, JOSEPH BELLAFIORE Principal 5 FLORENCE LEFKOWITZ 6 JOSEPH KASTER gift Je ALICE ROTH uizierd Dear Graduates: Congratulations upon your graduation! You have reached this landmark in an exciting year when our country has succeeded in sending its first manned spaceship around the earth. What a fortunate generation you are! You will see many more marvelous exploits within your lifetime, it will not be long before Man reaches the moon, and, perhaps within the span of your life, Man will establish contact with other planets. Yet whether he travels by oxeart or by jet, throughout the history of civilized man, his goals have remained the same. To realize to the full oneis potential, to find a congenial mate and fix one's roots within the family, to live in peace and friendship-these are the eternal goals, the realization of which we hope will come to each and every one of you. This scientific era has given us the added boon of leisure time in an era of plenty. We hope that your education at Lafayette will help you to use these gifts wisely-to find joy not only in the 'foutward trappingsi' of prosperity, but also in reading, in art, in music and in the cultivation of your own talents. Above all, we hope that your education here will guide you to help those of your fellow men less fortunate than yourselves and to live at peace with all mankind. Though in one sense, we are sorry to see you leave us, we are glad that you have achieved this important goal. May you all find happiness and may your lives be rewarding to you, your family, and your community, Sincerely yours, JOSEPH KASTER FLORENCE LEFKOWITZ ALICE ROTH A 7 .xdolminifi frafion Dorothy Hecht Samuel Zarachoff Dante Pocai Bertha Russell Administrative Assistant Administrative Assistant Boys' Dean of Attendance Girls' Dean of Attendance Nm. As we do so, the Class of '62 becomes another entry to a dusty file, another yearbook on a crowded shelf. Though our farewells to Lafayette will be sad ones, the challenge of the future awaits us beyond her doors. We hope that with the education gained here as a firm foundation, we will each succeed in our chosen field. The Class of '62, whether in a dusty file or on a crowded shelf, will have a conspicuous gleam of achievement. INA cooPER JENNIE MARANO 12 fgobfom I M :ai 'ai 'M X . 'WW 43515, B -ff :Q , of Y MR. And those who knew you, Harold, know it's tru Your outer beauty came from inner peace, A sweetness and a light came shining through, A glow, a goodness that will never cease. R! f: 5 i rn Q Q .gpaorfa Beginning the winter sports carnival was Lafayette's soccer team. The peren- nial champs breezed through their division undefeated. Led by all-city' Captain HENRY SPADACCINI, stalwarts DENATO' LAGRAVANESE and AN- THONY MERLINO, and newcomer GINO ZIZZO, the Frenchies faced Brooklyn Tech for the borough championship. A hard fought contest found the soccermen on the wrong side of a 5-0 score. The football team raised bright hopes with their strong showing in an early season loss to Jefferson. Hurt by key injuries, the gridders found the season rough going. The fine play of such as CHET BORGIDA, STEVE SPEIL- SINGER, MARTY SLOAN and Captain JOEL VISCONTE went unnoticed in a winless campaign. It was a banner year for rookie coach Gil Fershtman and his basketball team. The Frenchies posted a 17-5 record while gaining the Division II championship. Captain GARY GOLDBERG broke the single game scoring record with 38 points against Lincoln, FRED GRASSO set a new record for assists with 135 and MIKE POLLACK put a new rebounding record in the books with 27 against John Jay. The Frenchies utilized Coach Fershtman's patented fast break to great advantage. With SPENCER PORTEE, BOBBY DIETZ, JIM GIAIMO and LARRY YOELSON supporting the Big Three, the Hoopsters coasted past Forest Hills with a score of 69-55 in the first round of the PSAL -City Champion- ships at Madison Square Garden. The Frenchies upset a much taller Columbus team to reach the semi-finals for the first time in Lafayette's history. In the semi- final round the team out-hustled and out-rebounded a taller Wingate quintet only to lose after the buzzer 53-52 on a foul shot by Wingate's Fred Walls. The Frenchies finished fourth in the city, and first in our hearts. In the spring, of course, a young man's fancy turns to-baseball. The diamondmen were hopeful of recapturing their position as divisional champs. Leading the Frenchie attack was the Murderer's Row of Captain ERNIE DE- FILLIPIS, WARREN FRIEDBERG and MIKE FIORE. Two-sport man GARY GOLDBERG was voted class athlete for his strong pitching support on the diamond and his stellar performance with the hoopsters. Less publicized but no less noteworthy were the feats of the smaller squads. The tennis team, led by Captain LARRY TURTEL, and the golf team, under Captain BARRY SIEGEL, both hoped to improve their records. Mr. Friedman's track team, led by a strong cast of juniors and featuring such seniors as TED STUER, RICHIE KAPLAN and MARIO MONTELEONE, went into the inter-scholastic meets with high hopes. The bowling team, skippered by Captain BERNIE ROSENGART and ace JERRY GRAFF also foresaw a bright future. The handball team, featuring Captain DANNY FLICKSTEIN and boasting such performers as RALPH WEATHERBY and TOM O'CONNER, aspired to the number one rating in its area of competition. 145 ,4f!,LziC KCLJQACLK QCIJVL Ifnder the auxpicex of MV.
