BUDA Dear Graduates of the Class of June 1956: On graduation day everyone will wish you success and happiness. Parents, friends, and teachers will join in all good wishes for your welfare. Many people will think primarily of your material advancement. Many will measure your success in terms of the money, the position, and the possessions you may acquire over the years. There are, however, other characteristics of a happy, successful life, and it is these I wish for you. I hope that each day of your life you will find joy in some simple thing about you, the wind, the sun, the cool rain. There is a bit of beauty everywhere for each of us to enjoy. It may be only a display in a florist's window. Stop for a minute and drink in the color and the fragrance. Go on refreshed. Carry this bit of love- liness home with you. Blake a point each day of saying something friendly, encouraging, or pleasant to someone. There is a twofold joy in such a practice. You will make someone else happy, and, therefore, you will be happy. Happiness is contagious. It is also a real responsibility. How much happiness do you contribute daily to the atmosphere of your home? How often do you bring a responsive smile to someone's lips and a friendly reply to what you say? Everyone wants to be liked. Everyone wants to be friendly. That person is successful whose life is characterized by a friendly liking for people. You will be happy if you refrain from being a worrier. Think through your problems. Come to a decision. Then stand by your decision. If it is necessary to change your decision, do so-, but do so without constantly fretting and worrying. Have the courage to act decisively. Accept the fact that work is a necessary part of everyone's life. Decide to like your work. There can be joy in working at anything and in doing it well. The lazy loafer is never a truly happy person. Begin now to plan for your next four or five years, especially if what you are doing now is not what you hope to do eventually. We all have to serve a form of apprenticeship, no matter what our work may be. While doing so, we can plan and prepare for the future. In this way we can accept the present in a happier frame of mind. We know that later on we can make a change because we have planned and prepared for it. Engage, also, in a hobby or activity apart from your present occupation. Do not depend upon one thing in life for inspiration and joy. If you can direct yourself along these lines, if you can find a little beauty about you daily, if you can share this beauty with others, if you can say something kind daily which will give happiness to others, if you can stop being fretful and wor- risome, if you can make decisions and stand by them, if you can take joy in your present work and at the same time prepare for the future, then you will be a happy, successful person. And that is what I wish for each of you. May your life be a happy one. May you bring happiness to others. Affectionately, your principal, Q, fiaaaq.. Five Grade Advisers Dear Boys and Girls, Undoubtedly, you are eagerly awaiting the com- pletion of your high school career, and looking forward to your entrance into the adult world. May you carry along with you the ambitions and friendliness that you have shown at Lafayette! Today, a world wrought with social, political, and spiritual unrest, looks to you for leadership. In the hearts of people of your generation lies the hope of the world. May you find that an increasing amount of your energy is being dedicated to friendships, old and new, and to a widening search for those simple things of life to which youth is so often blind. I congratulate you on your accomplishments and trust that the future holds in store for each of you contentment. happiness, and the fulfillment of cherished ideals. Your Grade Adviser, AGNES E. OIROURKE Dear Boys and Girls, As you go forth to meet your next life experi- ence, my sincerest wishes attend you. May the good lessons you have learned at Lafayette serve you well. May you have happy memories of your high school life and the pride that belongs to a job well done. A teacher,s deepest prayer is that she has helped, in even a small way, to make a boy or girl a better man or woman, and that something she has taught will give strength when it is needed most. That is my prayer now. I am grateful for the part I have had in your growing up. I hope you will long remember me as your friend and teacher. May God bless you all. Words do not jill the gap. But quietly, in our hearts- Lafayette, we cannot forget you. Alaroon and White, thanks for the light You shed in a wondering mind. I now see the true self you helped me to jind. Is there a way To throw your arms around your ideal When you have realized it? Or to shake the hands Of those responsible for the wakening Of your tomorrow? The dawn of a new day has broken. A day spawned by a starlit night Which Lafayette, you bore us through. Lighting the paths we each must follow To our destinations anew? MR. J. GRADY ?rrf14f As I think back through the years, I find two bits of advice worth passing on. First, remember always to aim high, plan- ning well for the future as you do so. Then, never take leave of your sense of humor, for that, above all, will help you immeas- urably, in facing both your successes and your near successes. This year marks the parting of the ways. Some paths lead directly to the world of work. Other roads, for some, extend to the exciting world of higher learning, but all lead to the task of making a living. In this we wish you success. May you also give thought and energy to the making, not only of a good living, but of a better life. May those whose lives touch yours find in you a spirit of understanding and good will, and a readiness to help and share. We hope that through the friends you have made, the activi- ties you have engaged in, the experiences you have shared, Lafayette has served as a stepping stone into that better life. MR. D. POCAI MRS. M. ROSS No one can tell what the future holds for you- tragedy, joy, wealth, poverty, fame or scorn. Everyone remembers that night when the great Junior Showboat marched proudly down the aisles of the Lafayette audi- torium. On the stand to your right is a wax model of your school library with books on the tables to be viewed and bought. That was Lafayette's first Book Fair, which all of you enjoyed and profited from. The coming of May meant Varsity Time was approaching and so Stage Door came to Lafayette. What a show! By June '55 the first Code of Behavior was completed. On the wall there's an American flag, but it has 49 stars. Your Senior Sing made Lafayette the 49th state in the Union. What a night that was when the judges announced the winning class. You won! The Senior Class of 1956 went down in history as the 49th State of the Union! Ladies and gentlemen: If you'll just turn to the table at the wall, you will see a wax model of the set from Time Out for Gingerf, the 1956 Varsity Show. Ginger, a comedy about a teen- age girl who plays football, was naturally a complete sellout. Judy Siskin, Diana Bakst, Leonard Fleishman, Fred Mednick and Roy Green will long be remembered for their glowing performances. The life of a Senior wasn't all play though. To remind you of a few woes: in the showcase ahead you will see the Brownstein fand Weinerj Bible, and a wax seal to remind you of all those you broke when opening the packages for the Merit Scholarship, College Boards, State Scholarship, United Nations, and even the Betty Crocker Exams! The placement office that year was always Hlled with Seniors! There were Seniors who wanted to start in their future jobs, Seniors who hoped to fill up their pockets with some extra change, and more Seniors who just liked work. Possiblelp? In the next corridor you'll see the latest from the fashion center of Brooklyn, a model of the cafeteria with the New Look! Under the guidance of Mr. Wohlbach, and with the help of Betty Heisman, Elizabeth Small, and Kayla Gerstman, your Lafayette lunchroom was transformed into a pint-sized paradise. To your left is something very special, something reserved only for Seniors. I see you recognize it! Who could ever forget the black- board with the Music Class Marks on it in room 301? You will always remember the proud notes that sounded forth from Mrs. Warshawfs Senior Music Classes. As we approach the last case you will see, under the caption of In Memoriam, a Cap and Diploma. The Wheel is the only one of its kind in the world and is the gift of the Senior Class of 1956 to Lafayette High School. True to his Lafayette training, Joe took a chance on Number 56, the symbol of the world's finest Senior class. The wheel whirled round and round, faster and faster, emitting gleaming maroon and white sparks. But suddenly the wondrous wheel slipped from its axle. It flew out into the crowd! Screaming people scattered. Catastrophe threatened. Death leered. Out of the chaos emerged calm, unruffled FRED MEDNICK, the famous detective. Never fear, he exclaimed. I shall discover the reason for this grave accident? Setting to work, he sent for MARION CAMPO, the famous nuclear physicist, who had just been awarded the Nobel Prize for a new Theory of Remote Relatives by Marriage. But even Marion, who had received her early training under Mr. Harry Schnapp in Lafayette, failed to solve the mystery. Hlts basis is friction,', she said. Fred was undaunted. He would look elsewhere for assistance! He enlisted MYRNA KATZ, LYNN HOLLANDER and EDYTHE HAENDEL, the Pulitzer Prize winning journalists. They contacted experts from all over the world, who were flown to the fair by DAVID SCHATZ, ace of the airways. Still overawed by the speed of their flight, LINDA SCHMUKLER and RITA MEYER, gym teachers extraordinary, tackled the problem with all their strength. Heading a squad of Junior Coaches, resplendent in maroon uniforms, they turned the entire carnival area inside out, in the best spirit of Mrs. Leolya Reid and the Lafayette Health Education Department. LEONARD FLEISHMAN, who had formerly been known only as a leader of choruses, now turned his talents to lead- ing the search. But his failure was announced in melancholy tones by BARBARA GOLDBERG and PAUL SORVINO, Oscar winners for the past five years. PAUL VEGODA, editor of Sports Slants Illustrated, spoke up. 'LI can ask the fans to contribute to a collection for a new wheelf' he said. I can be in charge and hold the money, added ELAINE HANDSMAN, Wall Street tycoon. VVALTER ORLINSKY, the successful politician, after consulting with eminent lawyer, BARRY DEUTSCH, exclaimed, HI can use my political influence to make sure we get a good replacement. But will it be as good as the old one? asked STANLEY GARDNER, Sec- retary General of the United Worlds. If we could get the General Assembly to subsidize . . . He was interrupted by a rather noisy conference of SANDRA EISENSTEIN, JUDITH SISKIN, and KAYLA GERSTMAN, three artists who had been as- signed to the project. They had hit a snag in their plans, and SHEILA WAL- DINGER, first woman president of the United States, had been consulted. ROB- ERTA ERLICHMAN and CAROLE TREMAINE, teachers of England's Royal Family, were offering their advice. MYRNA NEURINGER, now the editor of Life, was covering this special conference with her chief photographer, ROBERT Twenty-two Fairgrounds in proar. BLOOM. However, they came to the conclusion that the old Wheel of Fortune was the best possible one. PERLE BESSERMAN, NATALIE ZEGANS, ALAN ADES, ARLENE GALKA and BLOSSOM HIRSCH, giants in the entertainment field, who had been out raising money, were notified of the decision to concentrate on repairing the old wheel. BURTON BAUMAN, although a very busy engineer, and GENE BRIENZA, who had replaced Frank Lloyd Wright as Americals foremost architect, volunteered to help mend it. They were informed by psychiatrist, MIKE POLSKY, who had been snooping around the wheel, that he had discovered the cause of the trouble. The wheel has a screw missing, he cried! Immediately the search was on for a suitable substitute. STANFORD FASS volunteered a string from his Stradivarious, but it was no use. UI donlt think a suit- able substitute can be found on Earth, said Joe Lafayette, Sr. sadly. uDonit worry, called JUDY BARBARASCI-I, the famous science fiction author, as she volunteered to lead an exploration to the planet Matalonia, named after ROBERT MATALON, the famous astronomer. Volunteers to join her came running into the square. IRA GOLD, world re- nowned inventor, wanted to show his latest gimmick, an automatic calculator specializing in analyzing all phases of Nothing. However, the trip turned out to be unnecessary after all. For suddenly STEVE PESSIN, football in hand and flanked by DENNIS MACKIN and BILL APPEL, borrowed a bobby pin from VIVIAN LOITERMAN'S hair. Triumphantly he placed it where the screw had been, and the Wheel of Fortune turned again! As the throngs of happy people surged back to the booth, the people who had worked so valiantly in the search, members of the Senior Class of 1956, went their separate ways, leaving another tremendous victory recorded in the pages of the immortal Lafayette News. Twenty-six Girl in Sparfs It happened to nie! You too? Freshman: I walked into the gym. Before I left it, I had purchased three passes to the swimming pool, two season tickets to the locker room, an admission card to the student lounge, a booklet of late passes, a sweat shirt, a gym suit, a pair of high heeled sneakers, Lafayette mittens, maroon and white knee socks, a picture of the faculty, two bus passes, and a ticket to a football game. Sophomore: Did I learn my lesson? Of course not! This time I bought a ticket to the Senior Show, the Senior Boat-Ride and the Senior Prom. How was I to know that only seniors could go? I was sent into Hygiene. This course was supposed to help mold my char- acter Qas if I wasn't enough of a characterj and develop a magnetic personality. Before I took this course I was shy, I had poor table manners, and I could not carry on a conversation. Now, having had such a remarkable course, I am shy, I have poor table manners, and I can't carry on a conversation! Junior: A new fad developed! What was I to do with my horsehair crinoline? There was only one solution. I folded it into sixteenths and fit it neatly into my locker. Wfhen I took it out, it looked like a checkerboard. That didn,t matter! I had won the battle of lockers vs. crinolines! Hygiene again! In First Aid they Nbroke' and ufracturedn every bone I own just to reset them once more. They even had me l'drowned so that they could practice artificial respiration on me. One day we sent scouts out into the wilds of Lafayette's halls, to hunt for a victim. The screams could be heard from ar1y and every part of the building. Let me go! I'm not sick! I donft need help!!! Our scouts dragged their victim into the classroom, and after we had treated him for shock, he was in a state of shock! It was too much of a bother to remove my colored knee socks every day and put on white socks for gym, so I merely wore the latter over the former. That is, until the teacher asked why my ankles were so swollen! Seniors: We did calisthenics, daily. These exercises were done, the teacher said, to keep our figures slim, and to make us vigorous and alert. VVe were certainly not vigorous after such lessons! In fact, we walked around like a group of old ladies! Come to think of it, there is a strong possibility that this was the teacher's real objective! What would a year in Lafayette be without Hygiene? I never had the chance to find out! This term I was exported by the gymnasium and imported by Drivers, Ed. I learned the basic principles of driving. Be a courteous driver, and stop when the light turns redli' I seriously believe that this course is a major factor in the many accidents that occur on the highways. Because I was Hfortunaten enough to have had the course, I am now blessed with a serious handicap. How can I possibly cuddle up to my favorite beau, in the car, when I know that we might, at any time, crash into that light blue Cadillac in front of us? Twenty-seven We are now faced with the privileges and responsibilities of being active American citizens and we are expected to play an integral part in shaping our nation's destiny. The world awaits that which we have to offer, for we are the leaders, the law makers of the future. The citizens before us, each in his own way, have created what we now call our American Heritage. This is not our past, but our present and future. It is the pride in being an American and our basic love of freedom. It is the desire to live in the spirit of brotherhood among all. It is the ability to act with an open heart toward all. The freedom and democratic spirit of choice that our forefathers fought for is ours to cherish and preserve. We realize, of course, the tremendous responsibilities that are ours, and it is only natural to wonder if we are prepared to meet them. Our parents and teachers have used the wealth of their education and experience to guide us. We have the high standards and traditions they have set before us. The heritage and guidance they have given us provides us with firm faith that we shall not let them down. May we accomplish the cherished hope that we pass on to our own children The American Heritage, more fully realized. SHEILA WALDINGER Editor-in-Chief Twenty-eight LADIES AND GENTLEMEN... if f TWH! Meeting your son's or daughters tuition costs quarterly or semi- annually is not always easy or convenient. That is why Manufacturers Trust Company, through its Education Loan Plan, offers a student's family the opportunity to pay tuition costs CPrivate Schools, Preparatory, Vocational or other Specialized Schools, Colleges or Universitiesj on a pay-as-you-go basis. You can now arrange for a Personal Loan which will permit you to pay for a full year's tuition in cash, and re-pay the loan in 12 cou- venient monthly installments. If you have savings, keep them. Once used, the chances are you'll never put the money back. There'll always be some good reason for spending it. Your only cost is 34.25 per 3100, including life insurance. The life insurance feature is an important consideration because it means that if anything should happen to you, the borrower - a student's father, for example- the insurance would cover the unpaid balance of the loan. You are cordially invited to apply for an Education Loan at any one of our 112 convenient oliices throughout Greater New York. Look in the telephone book for addresses, or call HAnover 2-1100.
