U16 Genie' looks at the Zzfure It was the only way! A Genie was necessary for the task. I took a deep breath to calm my nerves and then pronounced this dreaded name: 'Bjzcholkmacopxqvfizxp! ! ! There was a puff of smoke and the monstrous Genie appeared. In a thunder- ous, scomful voice, he said, Very well, human, you are now my master for one wish. IYhat is it you desire? Genie, I want to see the future. If that be your wish, then you have but to climb into that bottle. That bottle? That small ink bottle? Illl never Fit into that little bottle! Look how big I am and look how tiny it is. Puny mortal! Do you or do you not wish to visit the future? Iklake up your mind. Do as you're told or forget this whole crazy idea. Oh, all right. Only stop pushing-Hey, I made it! I actually got into this small bottlef, Very well. in approximately one minute, you will be in the year 1980 One minute later- You know, Genie, I donlt feel any different? Well, why should you? I don't know. I thought-Hey, this looks like a campaign headquarters during an election year. And look at those pictures on the wall! That one looks like GEORGE REPETTI should look 25 years from now. I mean from then. I mean- Oh. never mind. And it says Fortieth President of the United States. Look at the other posters. There's a picture of DEANNA BELOVE and she's Vice-President. The writing under the picture of MARCIA SIEGEL says she's a Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. I bet she's the first female to be a Supreme Court justice. And look at this poster-Why, it's TEDDY SMALL and hels Secretary of the Treasury! DAVE GELB is mayor of New York and EILEEN GOLDSTEIN is a senator, HELEN CRAIG is a representative and RONNIE ROZETT is Governor of New York. And that big time politician over there, smoking that stogie, is SHELLY BARDACH. Imagine that! All my old school mates are now big time politicians. Hey, where are you pulling me? Come, lowly one! We will enter that building yonder. It is a famous theater. Genie, look at the marquee. VVhy, this theater houses a hit musical comedy. And listen to that voice from inside. It sounds like-it looks like-I told you it was -it's CLAIRE RICHARD. And over there are the other singers-ESTELLE FRAIDER and JERRY KAUFF. And look at that guy over there. He must be the comedian. YVhy, it's KENNY BEST. Now I know why this show is such a hit. It's got to be with all this talent from Lafayette. Shh, let's stay a while. Hey, let go! Oh, all right. I'm leaving. 'iDo not delay. We cannot waste time in the future for it is not ours to waste. Awright! Awright! So where are you taking me now? I recall that there were many promising scribes-pardon-writers, in your school. Let's see what happened to them. We will scan some newspapers and maga- zines in order to see if any of their names appear in places worth noting. Ah! There is a newsstand. 'iWhere? '!Hanging suspended from that large balloon. lYhat's that? A new style for newsstands?,' 4'BIake no ridiculous comments. but climb up and buy a handfulf,

Okay, Genie. Here they are. 'gQuickly, look through them. Okay: That book is written by TOBY NORMAN and is listed as a best seller by its publisher, MARTY EDELMAN, the owner of Random House. He,s still getting ahead, that boy. Here's the Atlantic Monthly and MIKE JAFFE's the editor. And look at that article. It says ANN SCHNEIDER is to be the featured pianist at the recital at Carnegie Hall tonight and is to be accompanied by the New York Philharmonic, led by RUDY NESLADEK. Look! IRA JOLLES is the editor-in-chief of the New York Times, BLOSSOM BIRNBERG is the news editor and CHARLIE STILLMAN is the paper's leading sports writer. Hell, it figured. I bought one more magazine that we forgot to look at-Harper's. It wouldn't surprise me if-he is. JOHN DONATI's the editor. Well, that's enough of this. It's giving me an inferiority complex. Now I have an idea. Let's go to a movie. Weare bound to learn a lot from the newsreels and the picturesf, i'Occasionally you astonish me, lowly one, for I must admit that your idea appeals to me. Lead on. 'CI can see one two blocks away. Hurry up, Genie. 'iSave your mone yon tickets. When I count to three, we shall find ourselves inside. W'ell, here we are inside, Genie. The picture's already started. Let's find seats. ':The name of the picture is 'Front Windowf starring-Gee, I don't recognize the names on the program, but I do recognize the faces of those beautiful girls on the screen and I'm sure they're BARBARA ZALBERT and GLORIA COOPER- MAN. The names on the program must be their stage names. It looks like we came in at the end of the picture. The next picture is 'How to Marry a Billionairef Looks like thereis still infiation. Wait, three new people just entered the scene and I recognize all of them. They,re MARIE PIESCO, BARBARA HIRSCHMAN and JUDY SPECTOR. Well, it seems that five well-known Lafayette personalities have turned into five well-known movie personalities. Genie, what happened to the picture? It's over but it just startedf, HI found it necessary to speed time up, so that we will not spend too much time here. The newsreel will now go on and after that we will leave. Look, the first news item is about an Art Exhibit displaying the works of SHERRY COHEN and EDDIE REICHBACH. It was arranged by DONNA KATZ and ROCHELLE SILBERZWEIG. They'll make a million-oops, a billion. The credits read: Photographed by JACK BERNSTEIN, photography editor of the Associated Press. That boy sure worked himself up. The next item is Broadway Headlines of the Week with the voice of NIYRA MARCUS, Broadway columnist for the New York lNorld-Telegram and Sun. Those two Hollywood soeialites are GLADYS LOWEN and BARBARA KESSLER. They're now the co-owners of Grauman,s Chinese Theater, and look at the party they threw. That's the end of the newsreel, Genie. Genie, wake up. W'here to now? Ho-hum. Pardon. Now you will once again enter the bottle, N0 that we may return to your own time, and that I may be relieved of you and your low mentality. You know, sometimes I get the idea you donit like me. You're lucky I don't get mad at you.', Cease this idle chatter and make haste. Y'N'ith this final remark from the Genie, the poor mortal Lafayette student twho is mej got into the bottle to return to my own time and to leaye behind the most .exciting adventure of my life. But I forgot to ask one question-What does the future hold for me?
