Dear Graduates of '55, You are leaving your high school days behind you to go into different worlds. We shall miss you, but life is made up of a series of partings. Each of you will follow your individual plan. Some will go into higher fields of education while others will venture forth into the business world. We hope that each of you feels that his high school course has equipped him with the necessary tools to work in his chosen field. VVe hope, too, that you are armed with spiritual and moral valuesg with truth, love of God and neighbor, and sincerity of pur- pose. If you carry these within your hearts they will be reflected in your words and actions and so influence those whom you meet. Each of you can improve your own little world. It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness. Let each man think himself an act of God His mind a thought. his life a breath of God: And let each try by great thoughts and good deeds. Dear Graduates: Now that the time has come for you to go forth through the doors of Lafayette High School in to the wider world of experience that awaits you, may I wish you a life of happiness and success. May you dedicate yourselves to all that is fine and uplifting. May the road of life always rise before you, and may a fair wind always follow behind. I should like to impress upon you the importance of the spoken and the written word in the life of each of us. This is my message to you. WORDS Words are power. Words are ideas. Words set men free. Words enslave men. Words give men courage. Words fill men with fear. Words breathe love and faith and hope. Words shout hate, prejudice, and despair. Words ennoble and uplift. Words defile and debase. Words warm, comfort, and draw men together. Words chill, discourage, and drive them apart. Words Which lead men to God, or sunder them from Him. will you choose?
