TO THE CLASS OF 1954: My dear boys and girls: It is more than fifty vears sine d . 1 I . 5 'e my gra uation from high school. These years have brought with them trulv remarkable changes in our civilization, particularly in the field of transportationfautomobile, aeroplane, etc. You, in the next fifty years, will see as great changesf jet planes, speed faster than sound, nuclear fission. May they be to the benefit and advancement of mankind. This connneneement sees you at the threshold of a wonderful world: it sees me at the and of my life work and my career. I can only wish for you as satisfying and as enjoyable years as the good God has given to me. May you at the end of your careers be able to look back on the years as I do without regrets and with a feeling of aeeomplishment. Your principal, DR. FREDERICK WILLIAM OSWALD Dr. Frederick William Oswald's achievements in the field of education distinguish him as an excellent principal. Dr. Oswald. whose parents were of German descent, was born on February 21, 1884. His father, for thirty- seven years, was pastor of St. john's Evangelical Luth- eran Church. After graduating from P.S. 3-1, he pursued his studies at Boys High School. His ability as a scholar became quite pronounced and in 1901, when he was graduated, he won a scholarship to Cornell University. In only three years' time, he obtained his B.A. degree at Gor- nell, and at the close of his fourth year had been awarded a master's degree, as well as a fellowship in German. He was indeed a brilliant scholar. tt' After completing his studies in Germany, Dr. Oswald served in various teaching capacities until 1930, when he was appointed principal of Eastern District High School. Through his skillful direction, the students of the school were trained to meet the increased demands of the economic world. On November 13, 1939, in the presence of a dis- tinguished group of guests, Lafayette was oflicially opened. Superintendent of schools, Dr. Harold Campbell pre- sented the Key to the School to Dr. Oswald, thus start- ing what was to be 15 fruitful years at our school.
