The proprietor, RAY PRATI, peered suspiciously through a chink in the door and demanded the password. 'LMr. Grady sent us, yelled BERTA MELTZER. As DEANNE GOLDMAN jingled an armful of bracelets to distract Ray, we managed to slip in between MARTY KALMAN, LORETTA FREEDMAN and HARVEY BERKOWITZ. At last we were in a Coco-Cola speakeasyl Here was civilization's answer to the Anti-Coke 23rd Amendment. The big room beyond the winding corridor was ablaze with light and BAR- BARA KLEIN, the celebrated chanteuse, was moaning the blues. Sweet and mellow was the music from BRUCE ERLICHMAN's trumpet and JOAN RUBIN, WAR- REN SMITH, RENEE STEIN, ARTIE KAPLAN and RONALD NEWMAN, were providing a soft, moody background. Dancing to this dreamy music with one arm Hung about their partners and the other clenching frosty bottles of coke were STEPHANIE WARSHAVSKY, NEAL COHEN, FLORETTE MIERNIK and ABE MUSLIN. HARRIET HARRIS and JOAN FISCHMAN sat tailor-fashion on the floor and painted striking labels on a ease of coke bottles. As we were a bit shy we asked PETE LIUZZO, the singing head-waiter for .1 corner table. Vle had to share one with the members of the fourth estate: SEYMORE EISENMAN, JUDY SALINGER, CAROL WELT, IRENE LEVINE, LEWIS STEIN, ARLINE LEE and FILAMENA DE SENA, who write and pub- lish the Illegal Daily. MICHAEL EPSTEIN, SANDY KOUFAX, and ARTIE PERLMAN, mem- bers of S.P.A.W.S. QSociety for the Prevention of the Accumulation of Wallliowers in Speakeasiesj were raking the corners for partners, in an attempt to brighten the life of some forgotten female. Unnoticed in a remote corner, SHERMAN COLD- BERG, bouncer by profession, cast a cold, watchful eye upon the gay proceedings. Suddenly the brassy lights were blotted out and a huge spotlight rigged up by MOSES TAWIL and ERNIE ROSENBLAT and operated by DONALD SPEC- TOR shone blindly across the middle of the stage. Trumpets blared, while back- stage, BARBARA WEINSTEIN and DOTTY BEHAM slapped the last bits of make-up on stars SID BERGER and MARILYN GROSS. BARBARA EPSTEIN was busily scribbling notes as she interviewed GAIL ROSENBERG and DAVE BART, the celebrated comedy duo, for her magazine, the Suspicious Weekly. Super- vising the hectic proceedings, while perched on a high stool, was AUDREY ALTHOLZ. Everyone cleared the stage as the curtain was rung up on EVELYN EDSON, doing an exotic Egyptian dance. As she reached the last and deepest sway, the room was in the throes of an uproar! The purple-shirted Coke-Stoppers had stormed through the doors in a frenzy of stamping feet, continuing their crusade against the deadly menace of Coca-Cola. District Attorney lPepsi-Colaj FLEISCHMANN and chief investigator TED CSeven-Upj SMOLLER dashed through the crowd, breaking stray bottles wherever they found them. Over the loud-speaker the voice of MIKE HYMES shouted, This is a raid, and ANITA LIEBIXIAN tried to skate out the back door with ticket-sellers HANNETTE RESNIKOFF, CAROL LUSTIG, and FLO NIDITCH in tow. LOUIS ROTHMAN of the Legal Daily was already on the scene with his sidekick, LEWIS SAMSON, who snapped photos of investigators SHEILA JOSEFS- BERC and LENNY BERKOWITZ as they retrieved bottles of bathtub coke. IDA PASSAMONTI, CAROL KRAMER, LENORE STEINHAUS, ARLENE FRIED- MA.N, ELLY HARRIS, and PHYLLIS GROSS hovered in a corner for fear that their faces would be splashed across the tabloids. The crowd was being herded into patrol wagons and its destiny was to be placed at the mercy of judge MILDRED DENES. We cast one last, lingering, look at the desolate scene. The barred door hung limp and hingeless, shattered glass was strewn across the floor and a stray cat crept cautiously amidst the debris. As we stepped reluctantly into the patrol wagon, the sun rose over a lonely, broken- hearted patch of Brooklyn. JEAN Russo ELEANoR YAM Thirty-five
