He says that it's long ago. His favorite students are those interested in some form of art: painting, photography, and even music. He was born in New York City and attended Evander Childs High School. His edu- cation was then continued at Juilliard, C.C.N.Y., and Colum- bia. Once here, he at- tended C.C.N.Y. and Columbia, When the time came for him to choose his life's work we were in the midst of a depression, so he turned to a secure profession-teaching. Mr. lampel advises the Senior Class to learn to be polite and modest above all. X Born in Brooklyn, Mrs. Elsie Iohcmson attended Manual , f Training H. S. She then continued her education at Pratt ln- stitute and N.Y.U. Her favorite hobbies are gardening and collecting butterfly pins, which she works at wholeheartedly. Miss Marans' ambition always was to become a teacher. Her ad- vice to the Senior Classeto have fun, but, at the same time, to help maintain world peace. We can thank the depression for giving us Mr Bcxmett Rap paport as a teacher, lt was at that time that he chose teaching as his profession. He was born in Brooklyn, and here re- ceived his high school diploma. Then to further his education he attended C,C.N.Y. Besides teaching he devotes a good deal of time to running a bungalow colony. His greatest pleasure is spending time with his wife and two children. To the Senior Class he leaves this message, Be optimistic in the face of adversity. At all times be courageous and persevering, and graduates. 4, .f things will generally be all right. J Although born in Brooklyn, Mrs. Beatrice Waks attended Morris High in the Bronx. She was a student at Hunter Col- lege, N.Y.U., and C.C.N.Y. Her favorite pastime is square dancing. Students showing a lack of consideration towards others are her pet peeve. Mrs. Waks' advice to the Senior Class is: Bealize that education doesn't end with a high school diploma. Brooklyn College offers many courses in the adult education division that will prove interesting to our 'bi Mrs. Sarah Wczrshaw, formerly from Worcester, Massachu setts, attended one of the oldest high schools in the country. She received her college education at Hunter College. Her hobbies are folk dancing and embroidering. Mrs, Warshaw offers this advice to the Seniors Work hard and be happy By GLADYS WERBELOWITZ Slaves 0 Fate mm' es em e en By STANLEY CORN GOLD They came en masse, arrow-like to the now-slowly Widening frontier: the archaeologists and the anthropologists and the long-named men ot in- tellect. All identical in green-grey coats and polished hair-myopic, pre- occupied eyes peering out behind thick-lensed glasses into the biting air of the loW marshlands, So marched the blunted hammers and cranial calipers and notebooks to record the endless minutiae of discovery. News ot revela- tion spreads fast. Already the bold and toresighted among them had haz- arded to give the unearthed ruins a time-place. Nineteentotwentyhundred, they said. There on the edge ot a vast dark ocean lay a key to the inexplic- able and phantasmal civilization ot the past. There by the sea could be thrown out flashes ot light to a World ot Cimmerian darkness. A clue. A hope . . . To start they broke down the Walls that held the archives. And they were angry to tind what they did: 66The Man Who Came to Dinneri' Successg Coen Pitches No-I-Iitter for Diamondmen. First Tri-School Hop Held at Lincolng G.0. Social Group Holds Square Dance. Relopolsky Breaks Scoring Record with 35 Pointsg City Council Refuses Request to Halt Juvenile Delinquency. Intra-Mural Plans Rejected by Third Term Councilg Lafayette Inaugurates Program for School Athletic Stadium. Ten Where is the significance of this, they cried. Where are the exertions of the great men that led them all. But they never asked or knew to ask: Was it their destiny to mean something to those who follow them. Was theirs the rigid life of action and consequence-three reasons why and for. They never knew, or thought to know, that: school is transition, school is turmoilg school is change. And turmoil and change are not poetry. Yes, they mean. But no, they are not anything in themselves-neither music nor disorder, not gracious, but never impassive. They throw off the cold luminescence of the death's heady and at the same time the coruscations of a vivid growth. They are the imperceptible ash from which arise strength and beauty and perhaps weak- ness and decay. And so they splintered the doors of the second chamber and carefully probed the remants and they were sad to find what they did: Fabulous Football Fever Festival Fridayg Teachers' 0ctet Sings at School Concert. English, Gym Teachers Clash over Sports Theoryg Darienzo Crashes All-City Team as Left llalfback. Granted, they said. There are no decisive achievements open yet before us. But in what lies the conflict of the tortured race. Where are the fierce denials and treacherous self-abasements of the pained and stumbling evolu- tion. To the cold and juiceless eye these are not apparent. But that criterion is not enough to negate the violence of their existence, these were, again and again, these were. For it is only to understand that to save oneself in darkness is to clear from the mind the illusion of having ever been in the light. Lost is the seething nature that once despairs and looks to the calm and subtler life he knewg and so doing exposes to an unwilling temper only another drifting collision of outlook and ideal. lt is he who must suffer the Eleven revelation of the protean forces at work within that have transformed him, irrevocably, beyond all help. And once done, he can go nowhere, that is la malcxdie du temps. But the bold who do not shudder at the grotesque harleguinade they have been told is renascence, who are not crushed under the moral thumb of society, they, who are the silent, are alone the ransomed. Still further they searched, pounding down what had remained standing and spreading the dust upon their palms. And they were puzzled to learn what they did: P.T.A. And finished with what they had come to, slowly, regularly, they turned to start the lonely hegira across the dead and barren swamps to the crumbling towers they had left, comforted that they would be as before, shelter and retreat. No longer the smug and dispassionate, some were astonished and frightened of the drama they had played, the wiser with cautious intuition had seen a great truth, the warm and still living among them had under- stood. And if the feral men who had once stalked among the buildings of dust were to ask: Did we and for what purpose existg they had only to know that they had caused their children, gloomy men of science, to wonder at their own fallibility, and the rightness of their system, only this to find mean- ing in their lives. The ball seemed to be growing larger and soon it was the only thing on which my eyes could focus. There were faces whirling about the ball. Then l heard a voice which seemed familiar, but l couldn't place it. As l looked again, the faces in the ball were fading except for one that grew larger and clearer. lt was the face of Stanley Corngold, the well-known scientist, lecturing on his latest invention, twoeway television. My, he's drawn a large crowd. Even the president, Sid Cohen. has taken tirne out to listen. ln the press box, covering this spectacular event is Marcia Iosephy. editor of the Daily Herald. Suddenly, the picture becomes blurred and the ball starts to spin. lt stops with a blinding light from the flash of Iohn Huie's camera, loaded with shots for the sport pages of the Daily Herald. These pictures, developed by his partner, Mike Wenig, are photos of Dave Reingold and Donald Dem- ske. two former All-American linemen, leading the football Giants to victory. A full description of the game will be written by Martin Geisser. sports editor of the Daily Herald. He, at the present moment, is interviewing Vince Pal- mieri, Herman Druclcman. and George Deliandes, all of whom have made their mark with the lnternational Soccer Team. Occupying the last paragraph of Martins column is the brief story of the promising young rookie of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Richard St. Vincent. Marty, still pounding on his type- writer, fades away and the marquee of the Bijou Theater comes into focus. The lights spell out the names of Phil Seuling, Dotty Haber, and Ronald Sorvino, who are starring in the play, Women Prefer Bedheadsf' by the famous playwright Emest Di Giovanni. The orchestra, conducted by Barry Rubin. is starting to play the overture. ln his orchestra are the celebrated figures of Al Goodman, Marty Wiederkehr. Murray Weiss and the famed Newman twins, Dorothy and Pheobe. Peeking out from behind stage are Eugene Askin and Donald Boris, waiting for their cue to open the curtain. On the program, l see the names of Louis LoMonaco and Elaine Chionchio, who did an outstanding job painting the scenery. ln the audience l can see the Well-known surgeon Ioe Mandelbaum, accompanied by his pretty nurse, Florence Richgcrt. Directly in back of them Sixteen fafgceeeee --, fr, , is Frank Chiacchiero, up to his old tricks. He is escorting, not one, not two, but three lovely models: Barbara Davis, Sandy Goldberg, and Lorraine Kauf- man. Little does he know that his wealth is being eyed by Benton Rubin, Angelo D'Amico and Larry Klein, the famous trio now singing on the show emceed by Marvin Diesenhouse. l hear a buzz of voices and see heads turning as Barbara and Lucille Gianet walk in. Everybody is trying to guess which twin has a Toni. Looking around l discover Sandy Shaw and Connie Lamia, who have been voted two of the ten best dressed people in the coun- try. l'm sure that Sandy had his tuxedo made at Stuart Davis' store, located on Fifth Avenue. The music of the overture fades into the sound of motors coming closer, and the picture of a rising curtain changes to that of a descending plane, The first to leave the TWA constellation, owned by Ronald Wolin fwho owns practically everything in New Yorkj is the pretty young stewardess, Madeline Noviello. Ioe Spadaro, our ambassador to England, receives a hearty Ameri- can welcome as he descends from the plane. With him is his personal secre- tary, Rosemarie Lo Proto. Back from a command performance for the Queen of England is the famed Ken Bromberg, winner of the Silver Skates. l-le is being helped by the famous bone specialist, Ronald Appel. There go two famous fashion models, Arlene Ragona and Ruth Meehan, looking very smart in their latest creations by the Well-known designer Elaine Kaufman. As l gaze at the procession, l see two handsome faces and recognize the newest Hollywood idols, Marty Klier and Ioel Nierenberg. The attention of the crowd is drawn overhead where a sky writing plane is announcing the opening of Ierry Hupert's television show. There's lerry getting off the plane now, and with him is Diane Seger, who is appearing on his show doing some of her famous dance numbers. Also appearing on his show will be the newly crowned Miss Rheingold, Gladys Werbelowitz. The plane has emptied and the pilot Iordan Friedman is taking off. l-le has the plane twenty feet in the air now-but wait, there's somebody coming out of the door. There are shouts of Open your parachute and as he lands safely, l see it is the famous comedien Marvin Bimbaum still doing anything for a laugh. As the plane flies behind a cloud and disappears from view, so do the faces in the ball. Slowly, it regains its normal size and color and l find myself back at the bowling alley and realize that there is much work to be done before these dreams come true.
