This is the Year That overcast day in lune seemed to foretell the gloom that was about to follow as the Frenchies strode in for their last turn at bat, trailing lO-5. Chubby Serpa stepped up to the platter and out of the expectant silence, a sudden un- expected verbal staccato burst forth from the Maroon bench as if to serve notice that the Prenchies were not licked yet. Serpa batted the third pitch to left field, and the rest was history. The gloom had been forecast not for the Bensonhurst lads but for the de- fending champions from Grover Cleveland. Nine men belted five runs across to knot the score and rush right back to seize the City Championship in the tenth. What could have been a more fitting finish for the never-say-die spirit which copped the Brooklyn title a few days before? Who could but forget the two no-hitters hurled by Pete Pazio . . . the Dick Merriwell finish against Tilden when the Maroon batters were no-hitted for four frames and went on to win, 20-4 . , . the thrilling comeback to earn for a two-two deadlock against Brook- lyn Tech while only garnering one solitary hit from Bobby Sundstrom? But this was merely the beginning of a dauntless spirit which was later to become synonomous with Lafayette, the school. This was the school whose Bobby Beiss had tallied 30 points in a single basketball contest. This was the school whose handball team had gone into every match an underdog, but be- cause of the stout heart of lerry Fried and Bobby Tave and a few others, had notched the Brooklyn crown in a breathtaking 3-2 victory over Lincoln only to lose the city title by the same score. And this term we have witnessed the most successful Lafayette campaign ever. For this is the same school whose soccer team had won the city diadem three consecutive seasons and was well on its way to its fourth at this writing. As usual, it boasted of the city's leading scorers and top defensive players in Herman, Gensler, Shack, Soldo, Pappas, etc. But the piece de resistance was accomplished on the gridiron. No record was left unbroken. The first three games were not only victories but the oppo- nents failed to dent Maroon paydirt. Among the backlield members were the city's leading scorer, Hal Seidenberg, and Constantino, Canessa, Kerkhoff, and Company. That aforementioned spirit enabled the Maroon to tally two last minute T.D.'s to beat Tilden and to roll over New Utrecht, 34-O, the largest total ever accumulated by a Lafayette team. And how can we forget Seidenbergs all-around passing and running as he scored all the Frenchie markers to pul- verize Erasmus, l9-U? . . . And the way Vinnie Gargano, Phil Unger, Wally Shea and Frank Lima spent all afternoon in the Erasmus backfield? Nor will we find it easy to forget the 80 yard run back of an intercepted pass by loe Darienzo for the score as the Maroon battled Lincoln to a gruelling tie. We are truly unfortunate that we are leaving at the beginning of such a great era . . . an era which will enable us in future years to remember Lafayette as it truly is-a mother of champions.
