Double Dose l said goodbye to my boyfriend and entered the restricted confines. No males allowed in the girls' locker room. l got dressed quickly and went to one of the many mirrors to admire my spotless, starched gym suit. At first l thought something was wrong with the mirror. l looked for it all over my gym suit but it was nowhere to be seen. Beaded perspiration began to fall from my brow. lt seemed as though my knees knocked as fast as my heart was beating. My hands became cold and clammy, my fingers, numb. l stood there trembling. I had forgotten to embroider my name on my gym suit!! l squared my shoulders and bravely climbed the steps, ready for what- ever might confront me up there! When l entered the gym and realized how late l was, it seemed more like an execution room. The girls had already begun to play basketball, however, they were not shooting for baskets, but large white circles drawn on the wall. As l walked by one of the courts, toward the desk, l heard a ref call out, Circle made-two points! Miss Elaine Eiousf' l heard my teacher say. You were marked absent! Where were you? Where is your pass? Why are you late? Thinking that she didn't notice my nameless suit, l started to tell her some- thing about how my locker broke, but without success. Miss Fillup interrupted my excuse with, !'What's that l don't see? l told you last week that any girl who did not have her full name on her gym suit, would fail. You, young lady, are no exception, even if you are a senior. l tried to talk my way out of my punishment, but my efforts were in vain. She continued . . . you will report for detention for the rest of the week. Since you are too late to play, referee the game on court three. l Walked over to one of the games and started refereeing. The only rule l knew was for jump balls. Therefore, throughout the entire game my whistle was blown calling all violations and fouls, toss-ups! Naturally, the members of both teams became furious and started complaining. After they realized that their complaints were not heeded, they installed a new system, whereby they tugged at my gym suit, pulled my buttons, hair, hair ribbon . . . ouch! By the time my gym suit was just a mass of strips draped over my body, the five minute bell rang. But l couldn't leave as it's a ref's privilege to put away all equipment. l dragged my weary body to the balls and pinnys, put them away and suddenly realized that l had to go to Miss Porttes class next period. Nobody ever comes late to her class. l whizzed past the other refs, dashed down the steps only to be stopped by Mrs. Wellcon. l don't want anyone running down my steps! Now turn around and walk up and down the right way! . Oh no! l cried breathlessly, but had to obey. When l finally did reach my locker, there was a little card, color, pink, attached to it. lt said that l should report immediately, to the Deans office for eating in the Locker Room. Well, least I wasn't late!!! By ARLYNE WERTHEIM Twenty-three
