P --s AN EDITORIAL We who have been educated in a democracy and believe in freedom must fight for peace. The tragic war which so recently has been won has brought the world to a period of 'suspended animationf' the tranquility we sought is even now eluding our grasp. We who realize the awful finality of another world conflict have a great responsibility to bear. The world is often oblivious to the great dangers threatening it. We must awaken the worldg we must never let OUR minds sleep. We are the youth of Americag in our hands rests the future of the world, We must always examine situations carefully, and draw inferences from thought, not emotion. The racial and religious intolerence of the modern world is brought about by people who feel instead of think. The intelligence with which we have been gifted must be utilized, and not left to rest. We must be individuals, and not part of a mob. A thinking world instead of an impetuous world, means a world of peace instead of one which is ravaged by war. We must never permit the mental discipline which has been inculcated into our personalities throughout our school lives to vanish, but we must always preserve it as an inherent part of our make-up. We have been taught to think carefully and to choose wisely. Only by doing these can we hope to reach our goals and to glorify the concepts of democracy. Finally we must realize that no past victory is so greatg no present failure so dismal as to warrant living in retrospect. A mature person must be able to live in each instant as it passes. The material world is the world of the present and none other. lt is here that we must plant our hopes so as to reap a fuller harvest in the future. NANCY HURANT Eleven WE CHO GSE Mr. Nat B1umentl1al4A love of science in high school started him on his career. He enjoys teaching both male and female students because he feels that Since they are going to be together for the rest of their lives, high school is the best place for them to learn to under- stand each other. He is married and has two sons, His hobby is working in his garden, and also woodwork- ing. The greatest influence in his life was parental dis- cipline, His advice to the graduates is to obtain a bet- ter understanding of their teachers and fellow students. He always thinks that he is at a football game and that the students in front of him are draped in blankets when he sees girls in long skirts. , ' , 1 ,ug q . ,X ' '- ff M 4 3 'Z Q f if y 1 4 , 7 f 4 Q f f ' , 7 A f 5 I 4, ,,Z'f', . rf' if ,,,f,,,, ' ff f Z X l 7 f W Mr. Cosimo Di Pietto-When he told me that his mothers eight brothers were all musicians, l didnt have to ask what started him on his career. The great est influence in his life was not his uncles. However, the talks which he had with his father and the way in which they encouraged him had the greatest effect. His personal life centers around his wife and daughter Outside of school, he conducts the St, Iohn's University chorus. His conception of the ideal student is the one who develops to the utmost his talents and abilities reach his students and to impress upon them the im His ideal teacher is the one who makes every effort to WZ? X i ,Z portance of continued and serious application to their work. He thinks that the only possible advantage of longer skirts is to cover undesirable underpinnings, Mr. Irving Gordon'-'Naturally l prefer female stu- dents, was Mr. Gordon's emphatic reply. They work harder, are more conscientious, and besides, they are ' cuter, His liking for social studies and the advice of ' one of the professors at Columbia started him on the 1' road to teaching, ln the past, he had many hobbies, but now he has time for only one-writing. One of li' these years, he hopes to walk into a class room and zfzlzl' t find everybody prepared for work. fHe must be an I-T' V optimistj He leaves us the famous cafeteria saying, Thats not my trayewhy should l take it away, and T T hopes we will take the saying with us and that it will S disappear from Lafayette, Twelve Mr. George HauptHThe necessity of supporting his family is what started Mr, Haupt in the field of teach- ing. His ideal student is one who loves his fellowmen. He prefers to teach the stronger sex because they have a better understanding of fair play. His mother was his greatest influence in life, she taught him to be a straight thinker, Mr. Haupt feels that skirts should be neither too long nor too short tthree or four inches be- low the kneel, He leaves us with the thought that we should become worthy citizens and lovers of true democracy, if i Q - ? ti Q 5 Tiff y , if if if Mr. William HorniHe is happily married to his child hood sweetheart. They were classmates at New Utrecht High School. His idea of the model student is the one who is clean, neat, respectful, pleasant and who does his work not to please the teacher but for self improve- ment. His pet peeve is the ''Learn-me-somethin'-l-dare- you student. The greatest influence on his life was the realization that a person can successfully accomplish anything he determinedly sets out to do. When asked why he became a teacher, Mr. Horn gave the following reply: l'Should l ever learn the reason, l'll then have something to blame it on. Mr. Sam Levine-An ideal student, according to Mr. Levine, is one who tries to cooperate in his homework, attitudes, and general all-around scholarship. A teach- er should have extreme patience and fortitude, and understanding of the adolescent boy or girl. He has attained his goal in life and is very happy. His wife is the greatest influence in his life. He believes that as long as women will be women, styles wlll change and if they like the new length, then he's all for it. His ad- vice to the graduating class is to acquire a vital inter- est in current events, an interest they now seem to lack. Mr. Isadore MillmanfHere s another gentleman who prefers blondesfwith blue eyes of course, Mr. Millman claims his wife as hQs greatest influence in life. He has a child too, History students, beware! lt was his high school history teacher who started him on the path he treads today. As to his preference for male or female students, it is needless to say that the fairer sex gets his vote. The reason-boys can't wear the new longer skirts that Mr. Millman fancies. He leaves us with a novel gift-the broken shades of Room 4Ol. Mr. Milton Novak-He was educated at Madison High and Brooklyn College and holds the rank of Major in the Air Force Reserve. He is a devoted student of singing and has studied with teachers in Various parts of the country. Une of his idiosyncrasies is reading novels and not completing them. His pet peeve is excessive radio advertising that interrupts a good program. Ad- vice to the Senior Classvkeep your sense of humor! f A I 0 :sn 1 I Mr. Barnet Rappczport-Many effects of the depres- sion were unfavorable, but here's one exception, it gave us Mr. Rappaport as a teacher. lt was then that he chose his present profession. Besides teaching, he devotes a good deal of time to running a hotel. Other than that he does a lot of reading and participates in his favorite sport, handball. The greatest moments in his life were, according to Mr. Rappaport-the day of his marriage and the day his son was born. He does not favor the new length skirts and claims that women do not either, but are the slaves of fashion. He beaueaths the graduation class his best wishes for a successful and happy life, and, most importantly, his fervent hopes for a peaceful and happy world. Mr. Sollis Schub-One of his professors at the Univer- sity of Wisconsin had the greatest influence on his life. He believed in two-sided philosophy and always gave convincing arguments for both sides of any controver- sial subject. As for Mr. Schub's personal life, he believes that a teacher has no personal life. Everything he does is public. His idea of the model student is a girl that graduated last term. However, he wouldn't mention any names. The question of longer skirts did not stump him either. He quickly answered that girls ankles don't interest him-he looks for brains. Mr. Schub is al- so an accomplished gourmet. He thinks that one of the greatest pleasures in life is good apple pie, and pump- kin pie-in season. His secret ambition is to be a chef at the Waldorf. Fourteen Teachers were interviewed by MURIEL BERNHARDT, MARILYN LEVY CLARA SCHLIEN amfmi-The Lafayette People Preface To help the graduates to understand the ideals, traditions and institutions which have shaped their development in Lafayette and to stimulate them to think honestly about the problems facing the modern American, have been the guiding principles in the preparation of this history. The minor incidents and humor concommitant with these situations are also a vital part of the graduates development. We have tried to lose neither the humor nor the drama of your development, we have tried to again point out those countless, fond trivialities which accompany the development of the child into the adult, Come back with us four years. A transport is carrying your brothers, cousins, and fathers overseas. A little, cringing child tries to hold his head high, and gazes into the future. Chapter l-The Discovery ln l943 a dilapidated bus owned by the Pinta, Nina, and Syken Bus Serv- ice, lnc., floated into the marshes. A three foot-three inch individual left the bus and crawled through the foliage to observe a mighty empire built upon a sand dune. Racing back from whence he came, he reported the discovery of this mythical empire with golden bars over the windows. This incited the ad- venturous graduates of low schools to apply for admission to the glorious school beyond civilization which they called, because of its elevated position, a high school. Chapter 2-The Infiltration of Civilization The obviously savage inhabitants of the golden empire were glorified and civilized by the entrance of the freshmen. Soon their civilization had become so complex, that in order to spread it, the older citizens had to stand in front of large rooms and write on black walls with White crayons. ln l944, an es- pecially large exodus of immigrants from the low schools, caused an influx of many people into the high school, which they called Lafayette. And, as thousands of ships and planes rolled off the assembly lines, the freshmen held their heads a little higher, and were called sophomores. CContinuedD Fifteen Chapter 3-The Flowering of Culture Then one summer's day, a lapanese town was wiped off the face of the earth, and a new era began. Meanwhile, the abilities of the children who had entered Lafayette were increasing, now they were juniors. They began to join activities with un- natural zeal. Literature spread through Lafayette as two examples of de- mocracy flourished. Then, as the world celebrated a long-awaited event, the juniors felt an electric change comlng over their personalities. Their faces had become more worn, and wrinkles had appeared on what was once the smooth skin of ignor- ance. They began to take interest in elections. Their intelligence increased to the point that they found more differences in the candidates than were evident in their faces. They realized that elections were a vital part of democracy and that interest in elections is mandatory for citizens in a democracy of any sort. One day they looked into a mirror, saw a sparkle in their eyes and the reflec- tion of the sunshine in their hair. Their spirits were buoyant. ln a flash they realized what had transpired. They had become seniors! And somewhere on a South Pacific lsland, a boy knew that he would see his family again, soon . . . Chapter 4-No Decline and Fall of the Lafayette Empire Suddenly the seniors became button conscious. Each day they walked into their rooms and grinned at the teacher saying, Did they come yet? The more impatient ones made their own. Then one day a witch doctor entered the classroom bearing a box which had upon it the words: !'Seniors, take one! Upon the tin was embodied the spirit which had transformed naive children into naive adults. The seniors pinned them on and strutted through the halls shouting, One side! Senior coming through! Then in proud dignity they strode into the cafe- teria where they asserted their new found power. And as families were reunited, the seniors left the kingdom of Lafayette- they left to become the men and women of America. They left to take on jobs to get a higher education, to search for happiness and peace. f Epilogue Yet, as they left, there were new people to take over the kingdom of La- fayette, for it was realized that any civilization dependent on one person group, or minority, would die. 1 Throughout the history of the world there have been many civilizations. Let us honor one whose people have triumphed over circumstance, yet have not been vanquished by time. Let the bonds which bind them n'er be broken, but let them hold as a monument to time. No males allowed in the girls' locker room. l got dressed quickly and went to one of the many mirrors to admire my spotless, starched gym suit. At first l thought something was wrong with the mirror. l looked for it all over my gym suit but it was nowhere to be seen. Beaded perspiration began to fall from my brow. lt seemed as though my knees knocked as fast as my heart was beating. My hands became cold and clammy, my fingers, numb. l stood there trembling. I had forgotten to embroider my name on my gym suit!! l squared my shoulders and bravely climbed the steps, ready for what- ever might confront me up there! When l entered the gym and realized how late l was, it seemed more like an execution room. The girls had already begun to play basketball, however, they were not shooting for baskets, but large white circles drawn on the wall. As l walked by one of the courts, toward the desk, l heard a ref call out, Circle made-two points! Miss Elaine Eiousf' l heard my teacher say. You were marked absent! Where were you? Where is your pass? Why are you late? Thinking that she didn't notice my nameless suit, l started to tell her some- thing about how my locker broke, but without success. Miss Fillup interrupted my excuse with, !'What's that l don't see? l told you last week that any girl who did not have her full name on her gym suit, would fail. You, young lady, are no exception, even if you are a senior. l tried to talk my way out of my punishment, but my efforts were in vain. She continued . . . you will report for detention for the rest of the week. Since you are too late to play, referee the game on court three. l Walked over to one of the games and started refereeing. The only rule l knew was for jump balls. Therefore, throughout the entire game my whistle was blown calling all violations and fouls, toss-ups! Naturally, the members of both teams became furious and started complaining. After they realized that their complaints were not heeded, they installed a new system, whereby they tugged at my gym suit, pulled my buttons, hair, hair ribbon . . . ouch! By the time my gym suit was just a mass of strips draped over my body, the five minute bell rang. But l couldn't leave as it's a ref's privilege to put away all equipment. l dragged my weary body to the balls and pinnys, put them away and suddenly realized that l had to go to Miss Porttes class next period. Nobody ever comes late to her class. l whizzed past the other refs, dashed down the steps only to be stopped by Mrs. Wellcon. l don't want anyone running down my steps! Now turn around and walk up and down the right way! . Oh no! l cried breathlessly, but had to obey. When l finally did reach my locker, there was a little card, color, pink, attached to it. lt said that l should report immediately, to the Deans office for eating in the Locker Room. Well, least I wasn't late!!! By ARLYNE WERTHEIM Twenty-three ,rw M WWW Wy 'H 4-MY? 2 X 'R 'VN Bosin ORT6 ,fa-1-w 6- Sdmubfrl This is the Year That overcast day in lune seemed to foretell the gloom that was about to follow as the Frenchies strode in for their last turn at bat, trailing lO-5. Chubby Serpa stepped up to the platter and out of the expectant silence, a sudden un- expected verbal staccato burst forth from the Maroon bench as if to serve notice that the Prenchies were not licked yet. Serpa batted the third pitch to left field, and the rest was history. The gloom had been forecast not for the Bensonhurst lads but for the de- fending champions from Grover Cleveland. Nine men belted five runs across to knot the score and rush right back to seize the City Championship in the tenth. What could have been a more fitting finish for the never-say-die spirit which copped the Brooklyn title a few days before? Who could but forget the two no-hitters hurled by Pete Pazio . . . the Dick Merriwell finish against Tilden when the Maroon batters were no-hitted for four frames and went on to win, 20-4 . , . the thrilling comeback to earn for a two-two deadlock against Brook- lyn Tech while only garnering one solitary hit from Bobby Sundstrom? But this was merely the beginning of a dauntless spirit which was later to become synonomous with Lafayette, the school. This was the school whose Bobby Beiss had tallied 30 points in a single basketball contest. This was the school whose handball team had gone into every match an underdog, but be- cause of the stout heart of lerry Fried and Bobby Tave and a few others, had notched the Brooklyn crown in a breathtaking 3-2 victory over Lincoln only to lose the city title by the same score. And this term we have witnessed the most successful Lafayette campaign ever. For this is the same school whose soccer team had won the city diadem three consecutive seasons and was well on its way to its fourth at this writing. As usual, it boasted of the city's leading scorers and top defensive players in Herman, Gensler, Shack, Soldo, Pappas, etc. But the piece de resistance was accomplished on the gridiron. No record was left unbroken. The first three games were not only victories but the oppo- nents failed to dent Maroon paydirt. Among the backlield members were the city's leading scorer, Hal Seidenberg, and Constantino, Canessa, Kerkhoff, and Company. That aforementioned spirit enabled the Maroon to tally two last minute T.D.'s to beat Tilden and to roll over New Utrecht, 34-O, the largest total ever accumulated by a Lafayette team. And how can we forget Seidenbergs all-around passing and running as he scored all the Frenchie markers to pul- verize Erasmus, l9-U? . . . And the way Vinnie Gargano, Phil Unger, Wally Shea and Frank Lima spent all afternoon in the Erasmus backfield? Nor will we find it easy to forget the 80 yard run back of an intercepted pass by loe Darienzo for the score as the Maroon battled Lincoln to a gruelling tie. We are truly unfortunate that we are leaving at the beginning of such a great era . . . an era which will enable us in future years to remember Lafayette as it truly is-a mother of champions.
