Once ir1 a lifetime, only once, are we to sit on the platform of the Brooklyn Academy of Music in full, loose-fitting, maroon gowns, singing, applauding our classmates, listening to Dr. Oswald, with swelling hearts, conscious of the importance of this, our clay. Graduation will be the culmin- ation of our childhood growth. We are to be discharged as mature, thinking men and women. How many of us can remember what children we were when we entered this school? Lafayette has played a vital part i.n the formation of our characters. We have leamed here the meaning of responsibility, the lessons of self-discipline, the joy which accompanies doing good for both our school and ourselves. From our warm school relationships many a life-long friend- ship will undoubtedly take root. In the G.O., the Lafayette News , the Student Court, the Service Squad. the teams, and a score of other activities we have formed our deepest ties. Most of this has been extra-curricular work. It is after regular school hours that Lafayette becomes more than just a high school in which English, French and geometry are taught. Working, in the sense of accomplishment, playing, in the sense of enjoyment, we have formed in our companions good friends, true comrades. We have learned for ourselves what Lafayette is, and marvel, for while it has given us this knowledge we have strengthened its traditions, added to its stature. To Lafayette we entrusted our formative years. To Lafayette, in our mature years, we shall always feel not only deep gratitude, but a close relationship, for we are as much a part of the school, as the school is of us. As we depart we leave our deepest appreciation to our teachers who have made this day possible. Our sincerest gratitude is due our grade adviser, Mrs. Dufort, who has helped us with all our problems throughout our stay in high school. Now we must take a stride into the stop for many of us. Others will go into us will be part of the world of tomorrow. knowledge in order to make this world future. College will be the next special fields of endeavor. All of We must all strive to further our a better place in which to live. It is up to each and every one of us to work hard to make this a world of peace and security. How terribly fleeting is the present! In perspective, these three for fourl years will gain a richer meaning, a truer value. But in all our nostalgic reminiscences there must be a touch of sorrow, for never again will we be able to sit on the platform, young and idealistic in our long-sleeved maroon gowns. 8
