Toil is the law. Pleasure comes through toil and not by self-indulgence and indolence. When a person gets to love work, his life is a happy one. During the past few months you have been giving thought to your iuture days. What have they in store lor you? I trust that the happy days you have spent at Lafayette have in some measure taught you to appreciate the truth in the words of Iohn Ruskin quoted above. May you have learned the lesson to do each day's work on that day to the best of your ability. May you love your work and may it make your lives really and truly happy. Your principal, FREDERICK WILLIAM OSWALD. 6 TO THE GRADUATES: It is always hard to say good-bye to boys and girls whom we have grown to know so well and who have become so much a part of our lives. And yet, becausei of our hopes and aspirations for those same boys and girls, we say a sincere hail and farewell. God speed to you all! May the lessons you learned at Lafayette serve you well in life. May the friends you made be lasting ones. And may the happiness ot your high school days be fond memories throughout your lives. Sincerely, VERA R. DUFORT '7 BY A 1 LAWRENCE DUBOIS W E D I TO IQ I A I. Once ir1 a lifetime, only once, are we to sit on the platform of the Brooklyn Academy of Music in full, loose-fitting, maroon gowns, singing, applauding our classmates, listening to Dr. Oswald, with swelling hearts, conscious of the importance of this, our clay. Graduation will be the culmin- ation of our childhood growth. We are to be discharged as mature, thinking men and women. How many of us can remember what children we were when we entered this school? Lafayette has played a vital part i.n the formation of our characters. We have leamed here the meaning of responsibility, the lessons of self-discipline, the joy which accompanies doing good for both our school and ourselves. From our warm school relationships many a life-long friend- ship will undoubtedly take root. In the G.O., the Lafayette News , the Student Court, the Service Squad. the teams, and a score of other activities we have formed our deepest ties. Most of this has been extra-curricular work. It is after regular school hours that Lafayette becomes more than just a high school in which English, French and geometry are taught. Working, in the sense of accomplishment, playing, in the sense of enjoyment, we have formed in our companions good friends, true comrades. We have learned for ourselves what Lafayette is, and marvel, for while it has given us this knowledge we have strengthened its traditions, added to its stature. To Lafayette we entrusted our formative years. To Lafayette, in our mature years, we shall always feel not only deep gratitude, but a close relationship, for we are as much a part of the school, as the school is of us. As we depart we leave our deepest appreciation to our teachers who have made this day possible. Our sincerest gratitude is due our grade adviser, Mrs. Dufort, who has helped us with all our problems throughout our stay in high school. Now we must take a stride into the stop for many of us. Others will go into us will be part of the world of tomorrow. knowledge in order to make this world future. College will be the next special fields of endeavor. All of We must all strive to further our a better place in which to live. It is up to each and every one of us to work hard to make this a world of peace and security. How terribly fleeting is the present! In perspective, these three for fourl years will gain a richer meaning, a truer value. But in all our nostalgic reminiscences there must be a touch of sorrow, for never again will we be able to sit on the platform, young and idealistic in our long-sleeved maroon gowns. 8 AJS 9325 N I V 'F 'VI 'Y' - . ,Nic X L f 5 V I FF .., -,,,,f ,, H,+,'.j:v'- ,ff f-r f 1, 1 ' A 4 .MQ gf , fr my-, 9 i, FACULTY mv if I ,V X X 1 l I , Qf-1-f+'i'i1'i7W' bf' . , 1, 'f' ,mm - 'hfwzw 1 nv'11 ' ' -.nu A - 6If'1DJh'Q'.,v v - J-,fndh -5.11 :JT , V Pkwy , SENICDR T!-ACI-Il-QS MISS MILKMAN MR. It seemed to come from a-far-begging for Seniors to join up with the Legend, Our better judgment said no but did you ever hear of Seniors listening to their better judgment? So . . . Here we are! Raring to go! But nothing to write. Little did we know what we were in for when we closed our eyes and dove into a hat bringing out a paper marked Characters in Lafayette. I repeat . . . Well, here we are! With nothing to write! And sitting at the Senior tables in the Cafeteria waiting for our prey to appear. Are we sorry we started this 'cause here comes SPRAWLING SAM. He has just retumed from the food line bearing a tray laden with three sand- wiches, a hot dish, a quart of milk. pie, and chocolate pudding-not to mention the ice cream sandwich, pretzels, and potato chips. I'm sitting here contentedly eating my lunch and minding my own business when plop! This guy needs room so he throws his books in my lap. Then he spreads his food out Knot to mention his carcass! and starts slurpin' like a pig. The music is delightful except that he's keeping time to his cuds- chewing by poking his elbows in my ribs. Well, things could be worse and usually are. He grabs my dainty white handkerchief and uses it for a napkin! Now it's time for him to clean the mess up and we wonder how he's going to pass through when I pull my chair in. And he's so fat, that with much effort in pushing, and shoving. and heaving, and squeezing he's finally through. And so am I. For it's the last straw when he grabs back the books he threw in my lap and decides to take my lunch on line with him to his next class. I'm so hungry my stomach's talking, and so I decide to go on the lunch line. There are about fifty people in front of me and just as I get to the door, the odor of food sweet in my nostrils, the bell rings and it's time to go to class! O! What's the use? There's always pretzels! Well being that I'm so hungry I decide to stay here another period and wait for lane and Bill to get here. Whew! Thank goodness that's over. Here they come now. I couldn't stand Sam for another period. And stand is right, for the chair has just been pulled out from under me! I am concentrat- ing with my colleagues over characters and one of them walks right up to me. ,,.You'd think Bill would stop him . . . O No! Not Bill. He lets the guy pull the chair out from under me and watches as I slip gracefully and land on-the floor!! I look up with pleading eyes at Bill-big, sorrowful eyes that beg him to get my chair back-it hurts where I am--but does he care? No! he has his eyes on another character sitting in the corner. To be exact -there are two. BEET-PLEAT-PETE and FLIRTY LGERTIE! His eyes are on the latter. 17 Gertie is asking Pete for some advice on how she can attract a certain guy's attention in her next class. Well, Gertie, all you gotta do is calibrate him to your house. Once he's there, you're cookin' with gas, Babe. Put on a hot biscuit and let it ride. After your brisk discs are played, ask him for a date. Don't worry about being too aggressive. You're a slick chick and besides, we all know you're a flirt. Gert. That's about all the conversation we can gather, kids, 'cause Reet- Pleat-Pete just left for his next class and Gertie decided to remain in the Cafeteria to explore some new territory. Looks like Bill decided to leave for his next class too. He's got an algebra exam coming up. We wonder how many characters he will encounter there. With the ringing of the bell we find many new personalities strutting by. And speaking of strutting here comes the GAL WITH THE CHEERING SQUAD WALK. Yikes! Grab your lunch and duck under the table for she's coming our way with a fresh batch of tickets. Sorry, Betty Booster, we've gotten our tickets already. She'll only be back with her strong armed guards: we may as well buy them now, and avoid the bloodshed. Come to think of it, we may as well stay under the table rather than face the BIG BRAG WOLF who has just passed. He's on the loose looking for a victim to fall for his tall stories. Ieepers Creepers! Why is he ducking under the table here with us? Are we cornered? O no! Seems to me he got cornered himself! FLIRTY GERTIE spotted him! Poor guy! We leave the rest to your imagination, blood-curdling screams and all . . . Gosh the periods sure fly down here! Here comes Bill back again and from the look on his face he has met more than an exam in his algebra class. What's up, Bill? Well I just had my downfall. It was just my luck to be sitting in the wrong part of the room. In the front of the room on the left side I had the misfortune to be sitting next to what we refer to as the uncooperative type. He's the one who looks around him in the 360 degree arc to make sure none sees him writing the correct answer. Upon entering his correct calcu- lation he immediately envelopes his paper with his whole body. Now I ask you, is that a friend? Poor Bill, sure has his troubles! We don't even bother to go to classes. And this is the result! 'Cause here comes Mr. Grady with a certain look in his eyes, and there's no mistaking what that means! We told you the periods were flying by and we weren't kidding. It seems that Mr. Grady had his eye on us for the four periods we were down here. Ha! that's funny. We decided to write about characters and turn out to be a couple of characters ourselves. Imagine getting caught cutting!!! 18 DONT EENCE NE IN By DANIEL FELDHEIM Oh give me room. lots of room, let me wander through the halls, Don't fence me in. Tonight's big news is the celebration of the silver anniversary of the lanuary, 1947 class of Lafayette High School in Brooklyn, a class of which your reporter is a member. Incidentally, the school is now being made into a bank, by the Wonderful Walrus of Wall Street, Paul Neufeld. All this reporter can say is that at last people can get something out of it. Well, here we are in front of the Park Central Hotel, where the reunion will be held. The hotel is in all its splendor tonight. Its motto Where the elite meet to soak their feet, is lit up in aquamarine and fu,schia lights, shooting out of an atomic cannon at three second intervals. This is really a light for sore eyes. And now, here comes the first batch of celebrants pouring out of the new post-um station wagon. They shift into a modified T with Bernie Epstein, now head coach at P. U. carrying the ball and Lennie Solow, running interference. They charge through the revolving door, picking up momentum and the doorman standing there, and crash into a cactus flower pot. However, beating them to the pot, is Bernie Gaor, who is perched on top of the highest needle. The former track team captain Ouch!!! The crowd is now falling into reverent silence as they notice the arrival of United Nation's President Lawrence DuBois and his Secretary of Peace, Ioe Abrams, who is juggling a couple of handballs. Both have but sparsely covered craniums, probably from worrying about the present senior-pin shortage. A news flash!! This reporter has just been handed a special dispatch concerning two of tonight's guests. The new book by Lonnie Pickens, My Days at Lafayette or Four Years in a Sweat Factory has won the Pulitzer Prize for Education. Honorable Mention for the award went to last year's winner Abe Emanuel for his brilliant expose, School-What For? Now, I see Artie Press, basketball mentor at N.Y.U. discussing the future of sports with Eddie Drasin, general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Say Ed, how much longer do we have to wait? 26 PROPI-lESY Shoot the ham to me Sam, the table's set for meat . . . Those soft, melodious notes were sung by Vic Demeno, the man who sent Crosby, Sinatra, and Como back to Sorrento. Supporting him, was the finest orches- tra in the land, Morty Ielling and his I-E-L-L-O boys. now completing their ninety-fifth week at the Paramount. No, sorry madam, we don't want any flowers-Oh pardon me-i-it's Evelyn Morrison, voted most likely to succeed back in '47. L-A-F-A-Y-E-T-T-E, L-A-F-A-Y-E-T-T-E. Fight team, fight!!! Still at it folks? For the last twenty-five years a rumor has been flying the circuit, that because of the poor quality of lungs on the Cheering Squad, Lafayette didn't win on the gridiron in its first four years. It sounds as if the accused have seen doctors since then. Now, here comes Paul Freeman. the man who won first prize in the Metropolitan Art Exhibit for his painting, Somebody's Sister , being chased by her seven brothers. In a far corner, I see two bear-ded men, gazing perplexedly at a sign which reads: rr 42 l XflCI1'12 tat lc-a M3131 cos 2 At first glance it appears to be a formula for unearthing cosmic power. However, these two mysterious gentlemen, who are Professors Gilbert Rosenzweig, and George Greenfield of the Smithsonian Institute, reveal that it is their new recipe for Munchy Crunchies. Happy munching boys! The tumult now subsides as the orchestra makes ready to play. All stand at attention as the first notes pour forth. And in unison- Oh fairest of our city's schools of leaming . . . Faces sadden, thoughts go back to then, and tears roll down cheeks-it's been a long time, but we still remember! ACCOUNTING STAFF LAFAYETTE NEWS STAFF STUDENT CORPS SPEAKERS BUREAU MARQUIS STAFF GO-GETTERS CHEERING SQUAD BASKETBALL TEAM SOCCER TEAM A v -. l'1l4 SPO RTS BY GETTIN' TQIM SIDNEY IACOBSON BETTY MAGAZINER During our four years in high school, Lafayette has at last attained the stature in sports that it so richly deserves. Its teams, although not always of the top caliber in ability. through aggressive, clean play, have made Lafayette a name to be proud of and a school to contend with. The Lafay- ette spectator, now highly sports-conscious, has been an undying, loyal factor during the lean years , and is now being rewarded. A great sports tradition is being built. It is a tradition to rank with that of our finest high schools and colleges. The Frenchie is represented on a wide variety of fields and courts, with new enterprise in sight. In 1946-'47, the football team finally got going on the victory road. In its first four games, the Maroon and White defeated two league adversaries, Erasmus and Midwood. The Frenchies nosed out the Dutchmen in the season's opener, 13-12. and swamped Midwood, 21-0, in the fourth contest. Although the championship was out of the question for them this year, next season may see the Frenchies in the thick of the fight for the mythical title of Brooklyn. Cnce again our alma mater has conquered the City Championship in soccer. This year it was a fight to the end. We played overtime periods and rematches. Bill Ruocco, our fine goalie, upheld a good record and finished the soccer season unscored upon. If the team keeps up this fine record there will not be any more room left on their jackets to acclaim their triumph. The re-born handball team has already written its name on the walls. Lafayette's unsung heroes, the boys on the handball team, have copped the city championship two seasons in a row. The wallman who has had much to do with the drive to the title was Ioe Abrams, doubles partner of Gil Simms. Ioe's expert playing helped the two to trounce many opponents. Artie Press, captain of the basketball team, has led the courtmen for the last time this term. In the 1945-'46 season, Artie carved himself a niche 34 in the history of Lafayette sports when he shattered the former high scoring mark of 22 points set by Murray Weiss in the 1942-'43 season. In the return match with Fort Hamilton's courtmen, Press tallied 25 points setting the new school record. Stalwart of the baseball team was Ed Drasin, co-captain of the squad. Although Ed did not lead the P.S.A.L. Brooklyn division, he kept the Frenchies in the fight as much as he could in the two years that he was on the varsity squad. He hit his first home run in 1945 in the Madison A game. nother star among the diamondmen was Sal Dell'lsola, first-string hurler. For the past two consecutive years, Lafayette High School has held the Girls' Branch P.S.A.L. Trophy for the greatest number of participants in girls' athletics. We have achieved this honor through the co-operation and help of every girl who has attended our sports' clubs. The variety of sport activities offered the girls at Lafayette has been great. We've met after classes to participate in volleyball, basketball. bad- minton, handball, tennis and leaders' clubs. Of those mentioned basketball heads the list in popularity The rules, regulations, and techniques of the games are taught to the girls before they begin to play the games. They are taught to officiate at gxmes as well as play in them. Our girls have been guests of athletic so- cieties at various schools in New York City. Many girls attend leaders' clubs to qualify as junior coaches. Of the many who try. few are chosen. Those who are, offer their time and assistance willingly to help further the activities of girls in sports. The teachings of democracy have shown results in our club activities. Vwfe've played with one another, and against one another, still keeping the value cf sportsmanship above all ideals. One day we officiated: the next time we played. We all did our share and in return have been rewarded through the recognition of the place of girls in sports today. Well, there's the record of the past. For the future, all we. as graduates can say is- Fight on, Maroon and White! 42 . .W M 'UQ , ,fi if ff 'iff 5 fit . , f 'Z f V , , ' ,f 171.f M, 1 ...W , ,4 ,f ,.,. 1. , , A ' Z n ww ,, 2 tvs ,, -5 A .
