by Iecmette Mishcmie As we depart from Lafayette today, we are confronted with a world which has felt the bitter sting of war, a world which has known the terror of the F our Horsemen, a world which looks to the olive branch with eager anticipation. Victory has been attained after a long and bloody war. The lives of many of our friends and relatives have been lost. lt was not a simple task, it was not easily accomplished. The cost was immeasurable. We have spent these years of war, here at Lafayette High School, a place far from falling bombs, and sinking ships. lt is here that we have molded our characters, our thoughts, our ideals. During these years, our grade adviser and our teachers have shown us kindness and consideration in helping to solve our problems. We would like to express our apprecia- tion to all of them. As we leave, we carry with us fond memories of the first day in the school, of the crowded halls, of the busy cafeteria, of the football games, of the Varsity Shows, of the dances, and of Senior Day. All these repre- sent a time in our lives, when we combined pleasure with learning. They symbolize a period during which We gained friends, and learned to work and play together. For many of us, the future is uncertain, for others, a definite career has been decided upon. Some of us will go to college, others will strive to succeed at various vocations. Only a few of us will reach the zenith of our ambitions. Notwithstanding these facts we should all endeavor to gain more knowledge wherever our paths may lead. Knowledge can be as endless and as varied as life itself. Thoughts can be as many-colored, and as swift-changing as the sunset. With each day it is possible for us to gain more wisdom. By employing this wisdom in all our actions, and in dis- cerning the right from the wrong, we can lead fuller and happier lives. May we use it to maintain justice and world peace in the forthcoming years. The world of tomorrow is in our hands. 8

To the Seniors: The World you face as you leave high school is a World at peace-but it is an uneasy peace. A heavy responsibility rests upon you and upon all the youth of America. I hope that at Lafayette you have learned to think clearly, and to discern surely the line between truth and falsehood, so that you will not be misled by the chants of the demagogues, Who in these days blind so many through their appeals to emotion and selfish in- terest. May you be firm in a determination to act with good will and intelligence at all times. Do not be quick to criticize others but be watchful of yourselves! lt is only as We show ourselves Worthy of our American democratic heritage that We make our contribution toward lasting peace. Your grade adviser, KATHARINE HART
