Dah fn Spmh By Shirley Sutton Leonora Sharpe Lafayette calling! Lafayette calling! Calling all Legend readers! Com- ing in for a four-year landing. Four years of attending gym twice weekly for ninety minute periods has given everyone those familiar bulging muscles and all that vim and vigor. But four years of gym has had some advantages and hasn't been all cholly horses. The most dreaded though was rising at seven-thirty, dressing seven- forty-five, and then udressing at eight-forty-five to do setting-up exercises to Caledonia, What Makes Your Big Head So Hard? lt's too early in the morning to sit down, stand up, arms out, forward march, about face! Remember your first program card? lt said, Ed., ll A, Room, Gym. And like all freshmen, you asked the first senior you came across where the Girls' Gym was and ended up in the basement locker room. This was your official initiation into Lafayette and after that you religiously prac- ticed the same routine on all subsequent freshmen. Well, finally you get to the gym and you're astounded because you've never seen anything so enormous. You're accustomed to doing your gym- nastics in a room about the size of a log cabin. This is going to be fun! You're all set, broken in properly, and the teacher comes along and says, Play ball. She produces a net and a nice white ball. The idea is to get the ball ball over the net. But between serves, you are taught the Rhumba, Lindy, Samba, and the Virginia Reel. Many a time you wonder if four years of gym activity at Lafayette has offered any benefits. The teacher tells you the exercises produce stamina, coordination, and endurance to the human body, and the play periods give every student the opportunity to partake in sports and also to be a good official, something which calls for quick decisions and sportsmanship. I think the girls are inclined to agree with the teacher. ln our sophmore year we learned a new game. We are always pro- gressing, you see. This game is basketball. The main idea is to get the ball through the basket that's five feet over your head. Then you try your hand with a bat in softball and find that you're better off when you're playing first base. Of course, every day you sit down, get up, forward march, about face and do those good old break-your-back-or-bust exer- cises. By this time, you've broken in' more muscles than Atlas knows how to show. And now you're a joyous graduate with just a happy-go-lucky thought: you'll be doing all of this again in college. Whenever you dust off the the maroon cover of this Legend, don't forget to look in and sit down, get up, forward march, and about face. 21
