A heavy responsibility rests upon you and upon all the youth of America. I hope that at Lafayette you have learned to think clearly, and to discern surely the line between truth and falsehood, so that you will not be misled by the chants of the demagogues, Who in these days blind so many through their appeals to emotion and selfish in- terest. May you be firm in a determination to act with good will and intelligence at all times. Do not be quick to criticize others but be watchful of yourselves! lt is only as We show ourselves Worthy of our American democratic heritage that We make our contribution toward lasting peace. Your grade adviser, KATHARINE HART by Iecmette Mishcmie As we depart from Lafayette today, we are confronted with a world which has felt the bitter sting of war, a world which has known the terror of the F our Horsemen, a world which looks to the olive branch with eager anticipation. Victory has been attained after a long and bloody war. The lives of many of our friends and relatives have been lost. lt was not a simple task, it was not easily accomplished. The cost was immeasurable. We have spent these years of war, here at Lafayette High School, a place far from falling bombs, and sinking ships. lt is here that we have molded our characters, our thoughts, our ideals. During these years, our grade adviser and our teachers have shown us kindness and consideration in helping to solve our problems. We would like to express our apprecia- tion to all of them. As we leave, we carry with us fond memories of the first day in the school, of the crowded halls, of the busy cafeteria, of the football games, of the Varsity Shows, of the dances, and of Senior Day. All these repre- sent a time in our lives, when we combined pleasure with learning. They symbolize a period during which We gained friends, and learned to work and play together. For many of us, the future is uncertain, for others, a definite career has been decided upon. Some of us will go to college, others will strive to succeed at various vocations. Only a few of us will reach the zenith of our ambitions. Notwithstanding these facts we should all endeavor to gain more knowledge wherever our paths may lead. Knowledge can be as endless and as varied as life itself. Thoughts can be as many-colored, and as swift-changing as the sunset. With each day it is possible for us to gain more wisdom. By employing this wisdom in all our actions, and in dis- cerning the right from the wrong, we can lead fuller and happier lives. May we use it to maintain justice and world peace in the forthcoming years. The world of tomorrow is in our hands. 8 Miss Winchester Mrs. Houptmon Mr. Blumenthal Mr. Rosen Mr. Sorntorcr Mr. Weisberg SENIOR TEACHERS 'Q mas Mr. Buchlis Ai' W Mr. Lind Miss Antin Miss Koechling Mr. Bloom Miss Feinberg SENIOR ARISTA MAJOR INSIGNIA SENIOR COUNCIL OFFICERS SENIOR COUNCIL IUNIOR COACHES AND LEADERS' CORPS SOCCER TEAM CHEERING SQUAD AND GO-GETTERS G11 COUNCH STUDENT COURT G11 ACCOUNHNG STAFF MARQUIS STAFF LAFAYETTE NEWS STAFF LEGEND STAFF SPEAKERS' BUREAU COMBINED MUSIC ACTIVITIES BASKETBALL TEAM am GZQ44 Male4 By Melvin Goldberg Have you ever observed the students sitting about you in your history or English class? They're people like you, but what have they got that is so different? During my four long Cand often tiresomel years in high school, l have made an extensive search on the ways and means of our Lafayette civilians. You ought to recognize them. First of all we have: THE WHIZZ 9 He's the one who usually has his hand up all ,f , the timeg if somebody put a match in it, he'd look f like the Statue of Liberty. With a smile across his ll face that signifies superior intelligence Cto him, at , 4 leastl he gets up from his chair in a deliberate I1 X manner and relates his thesis on the causes of the American intervention in Cuba in l9ll when the teacher asks for the President of Mexico in l888. The day that he has laryngitis, he considers it a is catastrophe, although the rest of the class con- siders it a pleasure. On tests he's always busy writing and it's safe to give odds that even he doesn't know what he's writing. Extra reports go hand in hand with home work. Sooner or later half the class will be despising him. But, what does he care, he gets the results when the marks come on the report card. Well, next we havei THE HECKLER Contrary to the Whizz, his hands are never up to answer a question for the teacher, he gets a N special pleasure out of interrupting others. When- ft' ever his mind functions Cwhich is very rarelyl, and an idea stealthly creeps forward, he blurts it out Z and disturbs the class. l-le's usually the class 5 wisecracker Cvery crummyl who, when the English teacher asks for a word with the prefix poly , yells out, Polly wants a cracker. He's constantly conversing with his neighbor about the N.Y.U.- St. Iohn's game in the Garden last night, and when the teacher puts down a ZIP for him, he defiantly states that he was just telling his neighbor about the subject on hand. l-le's always the first to laugh at practically nothing and the teacher has quite a time making out his mark, she doesn't know whether to give him 457, or 5070. What? You know him? l thought you would, but here's somebody you ought to know just by the name. She's QQKJW is -641' f -if C4?7 ff 11.1 4842. , 41, . Lia 4' ,,'!'5' J fi 1.4. Q in the other, she's always Ufixing herself up . 5, - Whether it's during a test or in the middle of a 24 serious lecture, she's always in there, smearing x herself up as if she were going to pose for one of if those modernistic paintings. A typical period with her starts when she comes in from the halls, ex- 'f hausted from the tiring job of walking up one flight x of stairs, and flops down into her desk. But we shouldn't really call it a desk because immediately after, it is converted into a dressing table. Her bulging purse, which re- sembles a small sack of potatoes, is then emptied. Let's see now: hand- kerchiefs, wallets, change purse, compact, make-up-kit, comb, mirror, cigar- ettes, matches, letters, a small pad, keys, bottle of ink, picture album, extra stockings, today's lunch, and oh! yes! can't forget our school utensils-a chewed up pencil. I ... Si 'J Oh! I look like a mess! is her usual exclamation as she gets down to her job of reconversion. First it's her hair that gets the works as she pulls out hair-pins and piles them up in neat bundles of twenty each. Then the electricity and the loose hairs start flying out as she brushes and combs her lovely flaxen tresses. After it is combed and reassembled, she goes to work with the powder puff and the lipstick. Thus three-quarters of the period for her is spent, making herself more alluring to the boys, Who, in spite of all her preparation, walk around in sweat shirts and creaseless pants. Ah! me. You won't forget her, will you? This next one is very commong he's THE HOMEWORK MONGBEL Never having any time to do his work at N Q home, he decides to do his homework and copying J ta? The best spot for doing the homework is in the cafeteria where expert advice may be obtained-between an egg sandwich and a cream puff- although doing homework while walking in the halls is not uncommon. The funniest sight in the school is to notice a mongrel walking down a crowded corridor talking to himself as he has to rehearse, Tomorrow and tomorrow, and tomorrow .... l7 Hal Hal You were one of them, huh? But here is one whom all of us know: THE ARTIST DIVINE Pen, pencil, chalk, knife, or key-it doesn't make any difference to him what he uses as long as his desk is decorated. The commonest type is the one that writes or carves his name on the wood, just to make sure that nobody else gets that chair, or maybe because he Wants publicity. Club names are very common, and more than once will 49 the name of the laguars for suchl appear on a desk, in black ink outlined with white chalk. The designer enjoys making sweeping curves or dart- ing arrows on his desk. The gravestone type is also very Well known. He's the guy that can hardly wait until the period is over, and will write or cut out on a drawn-in diagram of a tombstone, Here lies the one who died waiting for the bell to ring. A girl is usually the one who starts a desk correspondence, beginning with, What's your name? and terminating when she runs out of desk space. xx 1 XZ Ma ff Q ft' T Y I' L s S 'x K I -17 if But the desk isn't the only recipient of these fanciful ideas, the looseleaf book ronks high among the line of ersatz canvas. The most common writing on a looseleaf book are the names of people, often connected by the word loves, Cie. Lucky Loves Fischler, etc.l, Can you imagine if she broke off with that fellow? Why she'd have to throw away the book. But does all this mutilation of desks and books worry the BORED of Education? Of course not! Last of all we have: THE MAN WHO WASN'T THERE From the title, you can guess that this char- acter is one of Mr. Tholfsen's shadows. I-le's never Ha.T+mrsan in class. On the rare occasion when he honors us with a visit, a recess is given by the teacher, so E4 that she and our visitor can straighten out his al- 5 leged absences. lf he's lucky enough to be friends 9 with the attendance monitor, and the teacher is somewhat nearsighted, well, he has another lunch if period to his credit. Don't think that we mind his M being absent, it's only when he comes back that ' we get grumpy, as we have to take our coats off his chair and put them in the closet. So ends our actual high school days, but not in spirit, tor we always will remember that character that sat next to us, or that gorgeous hunk of blonde that was in front of us in English or that genius who provided us with the answers in history, but most of all, those teachers, we loved them all. Cl'm writing the story, not youl. l8 f in f 4 Bay!! in 572.0414 By Henry Stem iWell, we the class of lune '46 are finally leaving. Thinking back on the past years we find, a little surprised, how important they were for Lafay- ette's sports. Whether you know it or not, in the three years during which the major- ity of us have tramped these halls our teams won their first football game, took two division and two city soccer championships, organized a handball squad and formed a rifle team. During this time we have also played good baseball, passing basket- ball and fighting football. Well, that's about all that will be seen on the records, but to us gradu- ating frenchies it's the memories of happy victories and sportmanlike defeats that will stay with us. lt's the thrill of watching Artie Pinto clicking behind a team and coming out with a long gain that we'll remember. lt's the sharp picture of the Lincoln games, always packed, always tough that we'll never forget. And for those few of us who were down at soccer games, a clear mind picture will always remain of the old leather dropping past an opponent's goalie for an exhibition tile of-the championships. Only a very few of us will remember the magnificent games played away from home-the leffer- son game in '45, the Boys' High game in which fighting goalie Mauceri played on, though injured. Yes, that's what we take with us, and going back a little farther we come upon the pounding, vibrant feeling of sitting in Lafayette's gym while Red Murphy galloped across the boards, or the time Ierry Remer won a game with two foul shots in sudden death. But, it's not a clear memory that we'll bring away. lt's a happy, thrill- ing, exciting, cheering, watching, chewing, stamping, hoping, cursing, whistling, atmosphere that we all felt whenever, in any sport, Lafayette's teams played, and Lafayette was spectator. lf some of you think that a sport has been omitted, then you don't know the purpose of this page. lt's not to give you records and figures, but it's something that in later years you may look at and let your mind begin recalling your own memories of Lafayette, not mine, your own recollection of a time in your life when the team wasn't professional but meant more because of the people who were playing it for you and watching it with you than any other athletic contest could. We, the class of lune '46 are leaving Lafayette and going out into a tough world. Maybe sometimes these memories of hard contests and good losers will help you take your job in the world. 20 Dah fn Spmh By Shirley Sutton Leonora Sharpe Lafayette calling! Lafayette calling! Calling all Legend readers! Com- ing in for a four-year landing. Four years of attending gym twice weekly for ninety minute periods has given everyone those familiar bulging muscles and all that vim and vigor. But four years of gym has had some advantages and hasn't been all cholly horses. The most dreaded though was rising at seven-thirty, dressing seven- forty-five, and then udressing at eight-forty-five to do setting-up exercises to Caledonia, What Makes Your Big Head So Hard? lt's too early in the morning to sit down, stand up, arms out, forward march, about face! Remember your first program card? lt said, Ed., ll A, Room, Gym. And like all freshmen, you asked the first senior you came across where the Girls' Gym was and ended up in the basement locker room. This was your official initiation into Lafayette and after that you religiously prac- ticed the same routine on all subsequent freshmen. Well, finally you get to the gym and you're astounded because you've never seen anything so enormous. You're accustomed to doing your gym- nastics in a room about the size of a log cabin. This is going to be fun! You're all set, broken in properly, and the teacher comes along and says, Play ball. She produces a net and a nice white ball. The idea is to get the ball ball over the net. But between serves, you are taught the Rhumba, Lindy, Samba, and the Virginia Reel. Many a time you wonder if four years of gym activity at Lafayette has offered any benefits. The teacher tells you the exercises produce stamina, coordination, and endurance to the human body, and the play periods give every student the opportunity to partake in sports and also to be a good official, something which calls for quick decisions and sportsmanship. I think the girls are inclined to agree with the teacher. ln our sophmore year we learned a new game. We are always pro- gressing, you see. This game is basketball. The main idea is to get the ball through the basket that's five feet over your head. Then you try your hand with a bat in softball and find that you're better off when you're playing first base. Of course, every day you sit down, get up, forward march, about face and do those good old break-your-back-or-bust exer- cises. By this time, you've broken in' more muscles than Atlas knows how to show. And now you're a joyous graduate with just a happy-go-lucky thought: you'll be doing all of this again in college. Whenever you dust off the the maroon cover of this Legend, don't forget to look in and sit down, get up, forward march, and about face. 21 I 1 ff f f Q 2 1 ' y f gf ' 41. ffffff - f . fb lv-' , Y . lu mf , Iv .gn YP b :' N K 4, vw' I X- 'T' 'Lrg S 'fu 5 ' f L ,, :ui-fy pw' Nj . The funniest thing about the front door post, is the large variety for excuses that the students present in order to get into school early. To get out of the cold or heat, they suddenly become members of the swing band, orchestra, dramatic club, speakers bureau, football team, and stage squad. Urgent phone calls have to be made. Students have to go to the emer- gency room. Some give me a different story each morning, never following in line with what they said the previous day. lf I were to believe some of them, several fellows would probably receive enough service credits for a class of forty pupils, working 8 periods a day, 5 days a week. Some of the feminine gate crashers tried to get through by flashing smiles and by using their feminine wiles. Nevertheless, I was always able to resist their charm, and turn them away from our doors. I was a social outcast. As I walked through the halls, and felt their stares, I felt so low that I had to look up to see bottom, so low that I had no trouble tickling an ant's foot, so low that I could crawl under a worm without difficulty. Sweat and tears, joy and sorrow, happiness and dismay have passed by me and my lurid eyes at my memorable post, and now into the world beyond maybe I'll see them again. But never the sight of these gate crashing football players or those pleading tear-jerkers or those energetic, enigmatic, everlasting teachers. Ours is the job of encouraging it, of strengthening it, until it be- comes a structure Wherein the peoples of the World have successfully joined together, and maintained peace and security. During this, our last term at Lafayette, the United Nations has assembled here in New York, at Hunter College. We are proud that the world has chosen our city as the meeting place of the new peace organization. The U.N. must receive our support, our trust, our cooperation. By Selma Hutkin Speaking to a few of the personalities in, and around Lafayette, I asked them teacher-to-student, WI-IAT WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO HAVE TI-IE SENIORS REMEMBER TEN YEARS FROM NOW? Contrary to popular belief, I was not greeted with any algebriac equations, French verbs, or even one measly French Revolution. But here, let them speak for themselves .... I rounded up- MR. EGGERS: Cin the l.H.T. room? 'l'I'en years from today I would like to have the seniors remember and be guided by the examples of sportsmanship, self-sacrifice, and fair play that they saw during their years in Lafayette. I might also add that I hope they will remember the caricatures of me in those GO. plays and bear in mind that they were . . . caricatures. Popped the question to- MAESTRO DePIETTO: Cchewing a salmon sandwich in the Teachers Cafeterial I don't know what they'll remember but I Ccrunch, crunchl certainly enjoyed seeing them squirm when they had to get up and sing alone in my music class. Found- MR. BROIDO: fbehind his desk in the G.O. Officel 'iludging by the memories displayed by our students, if any of them remembers ten years from now, what high school he attended, that would be an achievement. The one memory, however, that above all should remain, is one of pride in the part Lafayette played in winning the war. I-Iead of the Service Squad- MR. PASTERNAK: Cflashed my Senior Pin and got on the head of his late linel Lives there a man, at this late date, who still maintains, BETTER NEVER LATE! MRS. RUSSELL: Cpopular grade adviser and teacherj Ten years from now I'd like my students to remember to think for themselves, to weigh evidence before jumping to conclusions, to fight valiantly for what is right, to respect one another's beliefs- in short, to be good Americans and good human beings. MR. GEORGE I-IAUPT: I hope they remember 'I-Iaupt' is a sort of good guy and tried to treat his pupils fairly. If you seniors believe that I gave you a square deal, then I'm completely satisfied. 84 BUY UNTIT YOURE I ' BROKE OUR NATION DEPENDS SOLELY . . . - on YOU PAUL GALLERIES I 336 NEVV YORK AVENUE BROOKLYN, N aI 6-7751 CHAR-LEE 'L I N G E R I E QUALITY PRINTERS S H Q p - ' I Known for Values I 1710 VVEST 0th STREET ES. 2-8540 300 CANAL STREET New York City DIEGES 8: CLUST 17 JOHN STREET NEW YORK 8, N.
