In a smaller sense, it is the back- bone of a community. The need for education has perhaps never been more in evidence than it is today, with the pitting of minds against minds in the inter- national struggle for leadership in industry, as well as in science. In its first year as a four -year high school, Lafayette has welcomed its share of the educational load in St. Louis County. The administrators, coun- selors, and teachers have diligently attempted to prepare the LHS students to take their places in a world community. Whether a student plans to be an exe Q3 ' 9552: - Y! Rally. cutive or work in a factory . . . whether he chooses to be a leader in his com munity or a follower, the educational training that he receives in high school should enable him to live a happier, more successful, and more meaningful life. .. ..-S ...,. DEDICATION When one is a freshman, graduation from high school may seem to be somewhere in the far distant future, and yet, when the cherished date arrives and one looks back on the preceding four years, it does not seem so long a time after all. To some, graduation may signify the happy end of an era of hard work. Others will see graduation not as an end at all, but as a beginning---a time when they will take that first cautious step out into the outside world and be- gin their careers or continue their quest for knowledge at an institution of higher learning. Yet though it may be a happy time, graduation can sometimes bring tears to the eyes of even the most masculine boy: for this will be the last time he will see many of his high school friends. He will remember all the ballgames the dances, and even the time he had to go to the principal's office because he pulled little Susie's ponytail in his freshman civics class---all things of the past. ' One of the purposes of a yearbook is to serve as a pictorial memory book of the school year. It is with this in mind that we, the Lancer's Legend staff of 1963, dedicate this yearbook to the first graduating class of Lafayette High School, the 1963 seniors. TABLE OF CONTENTS FOREWORD ,.... AR ITY The 1962-63 Varsity basketball campaign proved somewhat disheartening. A series of four consecutive defeats by narrow margins in the early going could have been the difference between the maturing of a winning squad or the one struggling for victory which ensued. The Varsity Lancers won their first victory rather easily over Francis Howell, but they had to work hard for their second win, which was against Priory. UN IOR VARSITY The junior Varsity had a fine season in its initial year of basketball. Playing in the tough North County League, the Lancers were able to produce an above average record and raise hopes for Lafayette's basketball future. The apex of their season came in the league tourney when the fourth-seeded Lancers battled their way into the championship game and brought home the tournament's second-place trophy. All in all, the 1962-63 basketball season was a rewarding one for Coach Webster and his squad--one high- lighted by good team spirit and team play. We have placed in your hands what we hope will be a memorable ac- count of the year's activities . For a yearbook staff to publish an annual it is necessary to secure the advice and cooperation of many experi- enced people. Our sincere thanks go to Mr. Crites . He offered a guiding hand many times when it was needed: to the American Yearbook Company for professional advice and unlimited co- operationg to Mr. Schultz of Photo Reflex Studio for his fine job of photography. My special thanks go to Punk Lowe, who was always willing to gather infor- mation, type copies, and help make de- cisions, as well as fulfill his many duties as photo editorg to Ralph Green, who served as my assistants to Bill Wisspre and Debby Tribble, who took care of the financial matters! to all others who pitched in at the last moment to help write and type copy . I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the members of the staff . My deepest thanks go to everyone for the many hours of hard work they gave, and for the sacrifices of grades and other activities which they made . For me, the sight of the completed book made all that came before worthwhile. I sincerely hope the other members of the 1963 LANCER'S LEGEND Staff feel the same. ' A O 'N'f' V ' fc f-af' H- ,Y 'f J.
