r- Senior Class of 1961 Presents LEAVES OF LAFAYETTE - 1 Dedication We seniors wish to express our gratitude to Mr. Vernon Coy, our sponsor, for the time, advice, and encouragement he has so willingly given us. Without his understanding and guidance we would have missed many wonderful moments. Mr. Coy, to you we give our humble and everlasting thanks. -2- ■ ' - ■ ' ■ u toarapn arap Administration Our yearbook this year centers around the theme, The New Look Of Our School. Two new classrooms have been added, steps have been replaced by ramps, a P. A. system has been installed, new windows have replaced old ones and many classrooms have attractive new floor coverings. All of these new improvements have taken a great deal of planning. Piles of lumber, stacks of material and cartons of new ma- terials gradually fit into the giant puzzle that greeted us as we started school two weeks late this fall. Many hours of discussion and work were needed to bring about this plan for remodeling Lafayette Central. This task has been very efs- ficiently done by the Trustee, Mr. Thorn;, our Principal, Mr. Boling and the advisory board: Mr. Ruthford Smuts, Mr. Paul Carbaugh, and Mr. Virgil Woods. Principal We have enjoyed a new experience this year in hear- ing daily reports announced over the P. A. system by our Principal, Mr. Ralph Boling. Trustee Mr. Everett Thorn was seen more frequently this year at the school as he checked the progress on the new construction work. 5- Mrs. Ralph Boling Grade 3 Mrs. Jean Stanley English, Health, Physical Education Mrs. Thelma Wellman Art, English Mrs. Anna Learned Music, Band, Chorus Faculty Mrs. Naomi Edwards English, History, Latin Mr. Leon Dolby Office Practice, General Business, Typing, English, Shorthand Mrs. Kate Edgar Library Supervisor Mrs. Betty Booher Office Secretary Mrs. Gladys Morris Special Education Mrs. Mary Leedy Government, Home Economics -6- Faculty Mrs. Grace Brown Grade i Mr. Charles Bromel- meier Geography, Physi- cal Education, As- sistant Coach, In- dustrial Arts Mr. Max Amstutz Science, Biology, Health, Drivers Training, Physical Education, Varsity Coach, Arithmetic Mrs. Elizabeth Smuts Grade 3 Mrs. Virginia Paul Grade i Mrs. Laura Slater Grade 2 Mrs. Luseal Settlemyre Grade 4 Mr. Vernon Coy Math, Science, Audio Visual Director Mr. Earl Lake Grade 6 Mr. Harold Boaz Grade 5 7- Mrs. Vivian Karr, Mrs. Gloria Wygant, Mrs. Lola Chupp, Mrs. Inez Genth. Student Council Our student council, under the guidance of Mr. Boling, has been in existence for four years. This organization has accomplished many good deeds for Lafayette Central. The council sponsors several assembly programs each year for the student body. These programs have included The Glass Blower, Smith and Dane ' s Varieties, and Valentines Pets. The council also sponsors the Queen Contest at the annual fall festival. P rograms such as these enable the council to buy pins for each of the members. -40 ith Grade English ih to Right: Dland Denney, Tom Deuter, Mrs. Edwards, Shar- n Baker, Elizabeth Comer. 8th Grade Arithmetic Left to Right: Carol Prezbindowski, Dennis Deuter, Mr. Coy, Rita Carbaugh, Larry Carmack. It is their duty to appoint daily help, order new stock, and take inventory. Mr. Leon Dolby aids the Jun- ior class with this work. To all students, sports are as much a part of the school as books and lasses. . . Sports are the spirit of a vibrant youth wishful of combining education and recreation to a successful end. I This year Lafayette Central was defeated often on the playing floor during the basketball season, but with the los- ts came the realization that winning was not everything. It only made the players more determined not to quit and to [ay harder the next time. Going into the County Tourney of 1961 with a record of 3 wins and 10 losses, Lafayette Central was certainly con- dered the underdog by everyone, except the players themselves. Fans hoped but did not see how the team could pos- bly get past the first game. The first game Friday afternoon saw Bishop Luers and Lafayette Central starting the second half with Lafayette Cen- al trailing by 20 points and trailing 19 points going into the final period of the game. Lafayette Central staged a tre- lendous comeback to nip Leurs by a score of 73 to 71 in a double overtime with tiny Tim Feighner getting the winning asket. At the end of regulation time the score was tied at 70 to 70. Two free throws, one by each team, was scored in the rst overtime. Then with just 9 seconds gone in the second overtime, Tim shot; the ball touched only the bottom of the St as it swished through to cap one of the biggest rallies ever witnessed at the Coliseum. With one upset under their belts the Pirates played Areola on Saturday afternoon. Only a few weeks before Areola id beaten Lafayette Central by 45 points. Again in that game the Pirates staged an impossible comeback, for after ailing by eleven points at the half, the game ended in a 47 to 47 tie. Then with two seconds to go in the overtime and rcola leading 52 to 51 Bill Bailey was fouled. He sank both foul shots to give Lafayette Central their second upset in lat many days. Bill Bailey was not only a hero for scoring the last two points of the game, but for scoring the last eighteen points for ifayette Central. He ended the game with 32 points, one short ot the county tournament record. Bill was supported by is determined teammates all the way. In the final tournament, Lafayette Central was defeated by a superior Leo team by the score of SO to 50. But we are roud of a team that put on a great show for the tournament, a team that can hold their heads high. . . .the Cinderella earn of the 1961 Allen County Tournament. by Brent Heckley -55- Tournament Tidbits Bill Bailey, of Lafayette Central, scored the most points in the Tourney. The sharpshooting guard who paced the Pirates to two thrilling come-from-behind victories before they finally ran out of gas in the championship contest, col- lected 59 points in three games. He stuffed in 22 field goals and hit 15 of 19 attempts from the foul line. The 5 ' 9 senior not only scored 32 points— one shy of the single-game record— Saturday after- noon, but he got all of the Pirates ' last 18 points. He followed that up by getting the Bucs ' first four points in the final game, accounting for 22 straight points. Now it comes time to pick an all-toumament team. . , . It isn ' t easy, but judging by the way they looked to these eyes, here ' s the way we ' ve narrow down the long list: FIRST TEAM Pos. SECOND TEAM Fox, New Haven F Saalfrank, Hoagland Norr, Leo F M. Miller, Leo Evans, Laf. Central C Arnold, Areola Bailey, Laf. Central G Graham, Leo Peppier, Areola G Alt, Luers Leo High School owns its seventh county basketball tournament championship today, but the 1961 meet will long be remembered as the one in which Lafayette Cen- tral ' s never-say-die Pirates pulled not one but two im- possible victories out of the fire. The final score was SO-50, but Lafayette Central can hold its head high. The Pirates didn ' t figure to be playing in the final game and as their coach, Max Amstutz, stat- ed before the game, We ' ll give it our best but we aren ' t in Leo ' s class. . . When it comes to never giving up the ship, these Pirates are. in a class by themselves. Player McCiure Deuter _„ Evans Bailey ...
