WHERE THE PAST AND THE FUTURE MET History of the Class of '59 September 1947! More than thirty little souls started on a new venture as they enrolled at Lafayette Central. Some were happy, some shy, others bold, but little Belanda Carpenter shed many tears when mother left her at the school. After learning to write, Sharon Grabner wrote notes to her friends asking them to call her Fuzzy. Keith Prough was the class Romeo, courting all the girls at recess. Little Roselyn Ellis joined us as we entered the second grade. We were happy to welcome Jim Karr when we entered the third grade. During the third year, Shaneen Harrod displayed a new style after Keith Prough dunked her pigtails in an ink- uwell. Tom Sadler enrolled when we were in the fourth grade. Weren't we happy when Bruce Johnson and Jane Wood- ward started their studies here in the fifth grade? As we began our sixth year, Alma Lou Ewert enrolled in our class. Here, thanks to Mr. Lake, we became famil- iar with the good old paddle. DeWayne Heckely joined the group in the seventh year, and all the boys took part in basketball, track, and volleyball. Sharon Grabner took on a new look when she added a bit of coloring to her hair. . .Fun Sharon? This year, too, Gene Lopshire tried to convince everyone that he had elephants and giraffes in his barn. But we knew Gene by that time! We hated to move on from our last year in Junior High. Shaneen, Jane, and Sharon led our ballplayers to an astonishingly good season, falong with a little help, of course, from our coach, Mr. Klinej. Finally we made it into high school! Some of the girls began to study French, that romance language! Jim Gass joined our class and was our president for the next three years. Soft -spoken Sheila Crow joined our class when we were Sophomores. During the last three years, we numbered the same. We are growing up. During the Junior year we had a new experience, in giving a play. We all had stage fright: some lines were forgotten, some tears flowed. Then we had the honor of having the first Junior-Senior Prom. We made decorations for weeks, put them up in two days and then tore them down in three hours. What memories! Our final year is over. Many future plans are being made. Our Senior play, trip, prom and banquet are all in the past. Now we are looking forward to Graduation, but the memories of our school years will be pleasant ones, and will stay with us as our lives change. We will never forget old L.C.H.S. , -35- I
