Z 1 Q 5.1. faq After forty-four years of teaching. E. L. Jay has decided to retire. Ladysmith High School will long echo his name. For almost half a century, Mr. Jay has advised students, listened to their problems, and has been a friend to every- one. From his championship teams, while he was coaching, to the organization of the Student Council and Honor Society, Mr. Jay has shown his genuine interest in people, and his understanding of the problems of young people. LHS will miss Mr. Jay, but we wish him the best of luck and happiness in the future.

'irish' 'fini rv QQ?-1 1 'faire .z -Wfiix v sim, I Hu HAROLD SCHIOTZ THE SCROLL: One day shortly before our Award Day, 1955, a small group were discussing the various awards such as letters, keys, etc. , we give out to students, At that time the Kiwanis Award was under discussion. I believe Mr. Jay mentioned that he wished there were an award for some student who has willingly done numerous favors around this school for the last four years. Bill's name was mentioned. At that time it was suggested that something like a scroll with the signatures of all the teachers be presented to him - Miss Wright's poem was added later. At the same meeting the loyal cheering of Delores Cook was mentioned, and so the special megaphone aw ard that she was given came into being. The awards that were given these two students do not represent much value in themselves, but the services that each student gave to his school cannot be measured in dollars and cents. Every gasoline engine must have its spark plugs, and so every good school, and or- ganization within that school, must have students who are willing to give of their time and loyalty to their school without remuneration - spark plugs, in other words. I am very happy to take this space to mention our two friends above, but I'm sure there are many others who have made similar contribu- tions.
