Ladysmith High School will long echo his name. For almost half a century, Mr. Jay has advised students, listened to their problems, and has been a friend to every- one. From his championship teams, while he was coaching, to the organization of the Student Council and Honor Society, Mr. Jay has shown his genuine interest in people, and his understanding of the problems of young people. LHS will miss Mr. Jay, but we wish him the best of luck and happiness in the future. ,Q L3 gli 11.1-1 , I 4 l T' I 55 17 -J I' f -v ls -v-, J' ,iss F5051 ,- f i' . ,...,. .5 my,-gk, .. I believe Mr. Jay mentioned that he wished there were an award for some student who has willingly done numerous favors around this school for the last four years. Bill's name was mentioned. At that time it was suggested that something like a scroll with the signatures of all the teachers be presented to him - Miss Wright's poem was added later. At the same meeting the loyal cheering of Delores Cook was mentioned, and so the special megaphone aw ard that she was given came into being. The awards that were given these two students do not represent much value in themselves, but the services that each student gave to his school cannot be measured in dollars and cents. Every gasoline engine must have its spark plugs, and so every good school, and or- ganization within that school, must have students who are willing to give of their time and loyalty to their school without remuneration - spark plugs, in other words. I am very happy to take this space to mention our two friends above, but I'm sure there are many others who have made similar contribu- tions. To all of you who are unselfishly giving of your time, loyalty and constructive efforts to your school and community, may I express a hearty thanks, sz.-,I 4. ga' v . u'-n- A'-: .J W F x 1, , ,t r I 1 1 T. an ff E, X.,-eg, 162 at-Q, 1 . This alert looking group was to be the graduating class of 1955. During their freshman year, they elected Wayne Ahlstrom, President, Gene Burbey, Vice President, Arlet Goldsmith, Secretary, and Janet Nelson, Treasurer. During the year, they presented Freshman Return and participated in various activities. In 1952 as sophomores, they elected Ed Baker, President, Dick Horen, Vice President, Winnie Golubiff, Treasurer, and Bonnie LaBerge, Secretary. Activities included the annual Christmas Party with the theme, Wintertime. Five boys played varsity football. The whole school waited for the return of the junior elections. George Leonhard emerged as President and Prom King, Dick Horen, Vice President, Gene Ludvik, Treasurer, and Rosemary Hurley, Secretary. George and Joyce Harwood led the grand march for the prom. The theme was Oriental Gardens. A hilarious comedy, The Little Dog Laughed, was presented for a class play. Class rings were received in February. Early September of 1954 brought the class together to elect Jim Bishop, President, Ron Redwine, Vice President, Joyce Hritz, Secretary, and Marilyn Dahlstrom, Treasurer, Something different was tried in the way of class plays, a musical comedy entitled Golden River. , A large crowd attended the class play. Seventy-two seniors left the school on May 25. Among these were: Bruce Franks, Brad Goffin, Bob Buchholz, Dick Horen and Vern Kuerschner, who later moved away.Along with these also came several juniors who had some experience, and a new group of underclassmen who were having their first taste of cinder track work. The Jacks' first meet was the Rice Lake Invitational. Out of approximately fourteen schools, representing a good portion of Northern Wisconsin, the Jacks managed to take fifth place, being beaten only by one Heart of the North team. The second meet attended by the Jacks was a conference meet at Rice Lake. Through a slight error in time, they arrived too late to participate in all the events, but still managed to score in the events which they entered. The thinclads then journeyed to the Eau Claire Invitational, which was a night meet held at the Eau Claire College track. Some of the regular squad members could not attend, but, nevertheless, the Jacks scored lightly. The last meet of the year was the Rice Lake Sectional held at Rice Lake. The Jacks placed fourth.
