American sailed smoothly through five nights of unparalleled performance. The opening scene intro- duces the unusual array of passengers which include the popular night club singer Reno Sweeney lNina Gabianellil and her six angels, public enemy number thirteen, Moonface Martin lBrad Emertl disguised as a minister, and the high society figure Hope Harcourt, accompanied by her fiance Sir Evelyn Oakleigh and her mother. When Billy, Hope's old boyfriend discovers her engagement, he remains aboard to convince Hope of his eternal love. When Billy learns that his borrowed passport and ticket belonged to public enemy number one, he creates ingenius des- guises to avoid detection and to entertain Miss Harcourt.
