s 0 f'?' QA fy LMIGHTY cs-oD,wE ACKNOWLEDGEX OUR DEPENDENCE UPON Tl-IEE, AND WE 1 BEG THY BLESSINGS UPON US, OUR PARENTS. OUR TEACHERS AND OUR COUNTRY. fy KT fx y- 4 J' 1 f ,X I Xa.QE,DlQAI lQ!1! mf uring the past four years, we, the members of the graduating class of nineteen hundred and fifty-two, have experienced the countless anxieties, joys, fears and labors that form a well rounded program of high school life. Among other activities we have expended our energies in athletics, dramatics, choral work, dances and multiple other extra-curricular activities. However the one common bond which has united us all, is our work in the classroom .... our scholarship. lt is true that many other happy, though less consequential activities, have influenced our school days, but primarily, we have learned of the importance for hard work and scholarship. Without this training of the mind and will to guide our actions, all our labors would be ill-directed and haphazard Through the efforts of our teachers, we have matured to the point where we appreciate the necessity of scholarship, and the subsequent advances in knowledge. These advances are constantly required of any nation wishing to prosper in this modern age. They are demanded of a Leader of Nations such as the United States is today. Without citizens who will progress in these lines, our nation will fail, fall and follow. Whether we, as students, were brilliant or average, we all grew to appreciate the great truth and strength which is to be reaped from conscientious scholarship. From four years of study we have extracted the great lesson that scholarship is a daily, continual process by which we have en- riched our lives and given depth to our souls. Not one of us look back over these years and say that we have not come away with a greater understanding of life through our work in the classroom. We sincerely feel a pang of regret at leaving our school, but a firm resolution springs into our hearts which promises, that after graduation, our scholarship, not only in books, but of the quest for' a knowledge of how to master the art of life, will survive. Therefore, with this in mind we humbly look to the future and dedicate ourselves and our class to ..... scholarship. 2 -I' N REGENTS SCHOLARSHIP SCCIETY Carl Buczek Christine Pronobis .Tohn Palczewski June Hercek These seniors have attained an average of 901, in their regents examinations for four years. Movie star Helen Kosecki and her escort Jim Ross are busy signing autographs, while Bookie Bill Gowin on a dark horse Csort of a heavy grayj owned by big time gambler Spook Rosinski. Over near the bar a fight breaks out between the bartender James Bohrk and Don Woodworth who turned professional boxer after his trainer Frank Zicarelli told him that the Golden Gloves couldn't support both their families. Lackawanna High's new principal Joe Kloc is in a corner quietly talking over scholastic matters with his Latin Il teacher June Hercek. Richie Carballo has replaced Bob Hope as the nation's number one comedian. Like his predecessor, he carries on a constant battle with America's top crooner Joe Saccomanno. Over on the left we see the happily married Mark and Honey Balen with their fourteen children. Novelist Eddie Wawro is busy collecting material for his next book, which his secretary Catherine Warren is energetically putting all he says down in her short- hand notebook Csee Mrs. Sloan, we told you she'd make itJ. Inventor Carl Buczek is bragging about his latest success to cute Jeannie Paniccia. He claims its a dubble bubble gum with an inner tube for people who don't like loud noises. BATORSKI PRESENTS L E T D A T 1 E AN Y R THE COLGATE TROPHY THE PLAYERS WE HONORED THE CHQMPIONS football champs nder the capable hands of Del Fisher, the football steelers of Lackawanna went far beyond pre-season predictions by being crowned Co-Champions of the Niagara Frontier League. Rolling up their best record since the mid-thirties, 7 wins and 1 loss, the inexperienced Steelers acquired a reputation that was feared by every team in the league. Tonawanda High, although heavy favorites, could not withstand the terrific run- ning of Joe QZekeJ Gobolos and Joe lCharlieJ Abram. The Warriers were'the first to fall before a well greased grid machine, suffering a 21-6 defeat. Led by seven stubborned mules, Lackawanna blanked a powerful invading La Salle team, 13-0. Five thousand spectators jammed Lackawanna Stadium to witness a spirited and courageous Steeler team shatter North Tonawanda's 34 game winning streak. The hard-fighting Steelers up-ended the powerful Lumberjacks, 13-7 on Charlie Abram's two touchdowns, one a terrific 60 yard dash in the second period. A scoreless second half led by such defensive stars as John Luciano and Jim Radetich enabled us to score our greatest victory. The Blue and Grey's hopes for an undefeated season were destroyed by an inspired Niagara Falls team, handing us a 19-13 setback. A blocked kick in the end-zone after we had tied the score was the cause of our only defeat. Rallying for two touchdowns in the second half and holding the BigsRed scoreless enabled a never say Die Steeler team to triumph over a powerful Dunkirk team, 24-20. A big Lockport team was next to fell the superlative speed and power of the Steelers, who trampled them under with an impressive 28-7 victory. Playing in snow two inches deep the fighting Steelers rallied in the second half for two touchdowns to defeat a confident Trott team, 18-6. 'Last but not least, the well coached Steeler team trounced the powerful Blue Devils of Kenmore for the first time in ten years. A 24-12 victory was led by Ed. Sabuda and john Gruyich who blocked a kick in the end zone, thus ending one of the most successful football seasons at Lackawanna. Tailbacks Joe Gobolos and Ioe Abram, along with tackle John Luciano, received league honors by gaining positions on the All-Star team. I. V. CHAMPS Under the skillful direction of Iohn Devic, the Iunior Football Steelers finished another undefeated season. The I. V. Champions should help to improve next year's Varsity with such J. Opening their schedule at home, the Steelers dropped a close 55-49 decision to the defending champion, Tonawanda . The Steel City boys then romped in 4 straight conquests which included a good Kenmore aggregation, 52-443 La Salle in a close one, 52-48, Lockport, '72-685 and North Tonawanda, 51-41. Mark Balen, in the overtime victory over Lockport's tall quintet poured in 28 points. The Steelers thendroppeda hard one to Niagara Falls, 58-42, before going on to an eight game winning streak. The bright spot in the skein came in the 60-52 victory over an early - season conqueror, Tonawanda, later crowned as League Champion. The Steelers followed with triumphs over Trott, 44-35, and a close verdict, 53-48 over Kenmore which The next Steeler victims were LaSalle 56-42, a hard luck Lockport team, 52-51g and the Lumberjacks, 59-54. K, MCCANN ,CFROM the sunny September Day in 1940 when Kay McCann was greeted at Lackawanna High School until the lovely May morning when she bade us farewell, there was written an inspiring, but all-too- brief history of faith, steadfastness, and devotion. The story of her faith in God, and in her fellow-beings, the depth and expression of her spiritual life, as inherent and natural as her kind- linessg will always remain a glowing memory. The story of her steadfastness to her boundless conception of duty- to her belief in human goodness, is a lesson infused in all who knew her. The story of her devotion to her family, to her students, to all who were associated with her, found ex- pression in her roles as mother, as teacher and as friend. While we mourn her passing and offer our sincere consolation to her husband and children, we are grate- ful for the privilege of having, even momentarily, lived under the influ- ence of her teaching and example. Her firm and energetic steps will long echo in the corridors of our school which she served so un- selfishly, and will even longer re- echo in the hearts of the students she loved so well. 104 8,194 LLER FFALO
