Men are not born with these idealsg they must be developed. And, this development is attained only through constant practice in situations resembling those which the mature citizen must face. It is with this thought in mind, that we, the Class of 1950, proudly dedicate our year- book to the Student Council. This organization teaches ideals and provides a wholesome and satisfying experience in democracy for the student while contributing to the effective- ness of the school's program. And moreover, we wish to dedicate ourselves and the rest of the student body to the pursuit and attainment of the following objectives: 1. to develop student responsibility, initiative, leadership, and school pride 2. to promote worthy citizenship training 3. to provide for pupil expression 4. to establish a working model of a government unit under which students will live 5. to promote the welfare of the school through proper student- faculty relationship Lackawanna High Student Council Cleftl Row 1--Frank Carballo, Stephen Cushion fTreasurerJ, Romaine Torba QPresident J, Theresa Smolarek fSecretaryJ, William Mandy Nice-Presidentj, Katherine Pitillo Row 2--Leonard Pieczonka, james Ross, Gerald Halligan, Samuel Violanti, Stephen Krzyzanowski, John Dalessandro, Nancy Swiech, Patricia Kaminski, June Hercek Student Council Lincoln Annex fright! The Franklin theater and the Post Office now occupy a site which each spring bloomed with apple and cherry blossoms 5 each summer offered the cool green shade of gigantic elms and chestnutsg and rang with youthful laughter as winter sports took possession of the hill that is now Franklin Street. A panic and a great World War failed to stop the onward march of the young community, now Lackawanna, and three schools were built within a few years. The Steel City was on its way. The class of 1923 boasted twelve members. Within a half-dozen years, however, the elementary grades had been transferred to Franklin School and Lackawanna High had outgrown its first home. In the month of the great stock market crash of 1929, the building was, as we know it, completed, and at long last we had a gymnasium. But in two more years, so phenomenal was the growth of school system, the Lincoln Annex was opened for freshmen, and ex- panded until it housed almost five hundred students. Only a few years later the new build- ing, crowded and inadequate, surrendered its freshmen class to the Franklin Annex, and thus we find ourselves today--a house divided. Not until their senior year do our students join hands in common goals, and by that time almost half of the original class has left' school. Our most urgent need today is a cafeteria which we feel sure is a prominent part of the plans of our Board of Education. And now, at mid-century, Lackawanna High School faces the future with high hopes and undiminished confidence that its steady and vigorous growth will continue. 5 NA-Q .J XJ Q EV X Q90 f-. 4 24500 oogoqf 1 o MEN CHOSEN BY LACKAWANNA CITIZENS T0 REPRESENT THEM IN EDUCATIONAL MATTERS 43,4 ,Y W Q , A Y' Q.,-ffl if ef TE QQ? , V J, H f 0 'TJ QQ of P00 '00 A Qs, 'Ev 43- Af '90 ' ANNN qs Q 45, yr I BDARD Of 6 EDUCATION AIDS T0 BOARD OF EDUCATION THOMAS MC NAMARA ORN PILLION Purchasing Agent LEO 310 HA ELS I Angina? erk ADULT EDUCATION JOHN SABUDA Supervisor PHYLLIS PARYZ Secretary 8 BUSINESS OF FIC E Left to right: Helen Eagan, Accountant Estelle Hope, Payroll Clerk Sally Carestio, Secretary 006 PQIAICIPHLS To lead them- IOI-IN P. JO 645 EREIN we set dovm for all the world to see and judge the glorious history of the illustrious Class of 1950. We began our high school career with the motto, Omni freshmen in tres partes divisa sunt. For indeed all freshmen were divided into three parts--some at Franklin some at Lincoln, and a handful at the main building. Despite unfortunate splitting of ranks, we determined to show the rest of the student body that we were as important a class as any other. Limited though our activities were we managed to attend a few social functions and to cheer on the blue and grey squads. It was not until our sophomore year that we really became an integral part of the school life. We became active participants in various school clubs' and organizations. Our sophomore boys went all out for sports, and it was a primarily sophomore junior varsity that won the I. V. playoffs for 1948. Slowly we progressed and gained in stature until when june came along we were a group well-equipped to take over the tasks of a junior class. As juniors we really came into our own. We were now expected to work hand in hand with the seniors in order to prepare ourselves for the day when we would take over the reins of the senior class, and we lived up to expectations. We started off by pitching in and helping to start the school paper. It was largely through junior efforts on both the editorial and production staffs that the paper was the initial success it was. Our affairs were put into the capable hands of our elected officers and the commit- tee. It was our junior class which originated the Junior Dance held to obtain funds for the prom. The prom at the main building, moving up day and the prom at Lincoln, and even senior class day all have a reserved place in our hearts for we realized that these activities meant the end of the gay, carefree life of a junior and the beginning of the serious business of being a senior. The Class of 1950 assembled breathlessly and started the year off right with a get- acquainted dance, followed quickly by our Hallowe'en Party. However, life was not all fun for us, and we buckled down to the serious business of study. We were especially proud that the Student Council made its debut during our reigning year. The election of officers, the Christmas pageant, vacation, and the mid-term exams came in rapid succession followed by our magazine campaign which proved to be a tremendous success. With the advent of Spring thoughts of coming graduation made us put the well known noses to the grindstone. The last few months were crowded with feverish activity. Besides our earnest preparation for Iune and regents there was the spring play ta masterpiece of productionl, the yearbook, class day, the prom all had to be attended to. Finally the great day comes--the day for which we have been working for four years--graduation. As we march slowly up the aisle to receive our diplomas, the cherished memories of Lackawanna days brings a lump to our throats. Lackawanna shall always live in a special part of our hearts and we shall ever strive to bring honor and glory to her name. 16 ll OTFC5L1.,KW5fwJfw4-fb 3' mi in W Qi T -,kk Ei! With Mr. Osborne's warning the claims it's really the saying of an eloquent predecessor, but we know betterl resounding in our ears, Iune has crept upon us and smothered us with activities exclusive to Seniors. We find ourselves engulfed in a whirl of approaching exams, Class Day, the Senior Prom and Graduation. But before we cross the bridge to our new way of life, we, the Class of 1950, bequeath certain cherished t?J posses- sions to our successors: Ward Spates and Rosetta Camp, who know how to enjoy a classroom nap Qand on those hard seats, tool bequeath to Vince Daley a pillow for more comfort than they enjoyed. In the musical field, may the golden tones of Joanne McDermott and Evelyn Rosinski be carried on in Lucy Mariotti. To Danny Gawlak, Tommy Lavalle leaves the gift of added accordianic skill. To Mr. Cosgrove goes the gratitude and appreciation of the Senior Class, especially the Yearbook Staff, who know of the patience and work he has put into our yearbook. To all our teachers goes a thanks which cannot be expressed in words. With this thought in mind we must realize that as prospective Seniors, we are approaching the final stage of our basic education. Henceforth we must devote serious thought to the future since we shall either pursue further education in a specific field, or take up the more prosaic job of earning a living in the everyday world of work. As Juniors we have the responsibilities of achieving the most we can in scholastic work and also for setting a good example and record for those who follow us. The scholastic achievements of our Junior year play an important part in what our future will be. If we succeed now with hon- ors and ease, we display a desire to succeed as Seniors and then as Graduates., but if we fail now, future success is very doubtful. Then, too, those who follow us will have a tendency to imitate any good or bad example we might set for them This, then, is the time to act. The future is almost upon us, and we must prepare now to face it. Remember, It's Later Than You Think! gm ,QQ-VK-ina .SK IST ROW! The introduction of student government has provided channels for the coordination and direction of student effort, and has provided opportunity for effective leadership among the pupils in all our classes. Our entire student body has become an active, co- operative, thinking group with common interests, capable of dealing with real problems. The organization of fund-raising projects such as the magazine subscription campaign, the varsity show, and the spring play, the planning of our social events and special assemblies 5 parti- cipation in the control of athletics, and a sharing of responsibility for observance of school regulations have, through the direction of the student council, developed abilities, loyalties and enthusiasms of in- estimable benefit to the entire school. Because of the separation of our student body in three buildings, with the consequent growth of individual interests and attitudes, the work of the Council in its first year is even more remarkable. However, there is much yet to be accomplished. Ideally, the Council should be the voice of all the stu- dents. Our administrative staff has a real faith in our ability to make sound decisions as citizens of a school-community. We can learn democracy by living it. On the basis of our start this year, the possi- bilities are almost limitless. 60 wh N. THE- BIG- EVENT LETTER DAY ALL'AI lERlCAN HE PLANNED IT AL WISTERT HARRY DOHERTY MR. RALPH CARESTIO MR. This third spot is the customary position held by the Lackawanna team for the past three years. The fans, not expecting a good season this year, were surprised at the spirit and fight displayed by the L.H.S. squad. Tonawanda High, heavy favorites over Lackawanna, who were first to fall before the grid machine, suffered a 12--6 defeat. Pete Uglesich scored on a double reverse and a pass from Viterna giving Lackawanna their first victory of the season. Again Lackawanna High displayed its skill and prowess as they swamped Trott Vocational 28--0 in the Lackawanna Stadium. Credit for Lackawanna's touchdowns go to Ed Duda, Nick Welchoff, and Steve Cushion. LaSalle next felt the weight of Lackawanna's attack as they went down to defeat 19--6 before the Steeler squad. The Blue and Grey's hopes for an undefeated season were shattered by a power- ful Jamestown squad, as they handed the Steelers a 20--12 defeat. Two quick touch- downs in the first five minutes did not dampen the Lackawanna spirit as they out- played Jamestown and came from a 13 point deficit to within one point of tying the game. A 60--yard dash by Roger Olson in the last minute gave the Iimtowners a 20--12 victory and disheartened the Steeler squad. Life flowed back to the Steelers as they galloped to a 25--13 victory over host Niagara Falls in a Strengthener for the N. T. Classic. A heart-breaking defeat from N. T. to the tune of 44--6 completely destroyed Lackawanna's hopes for the championship. The Steelers held the Lumberjacks to a 13--0 first half lead, but as the second half began, N. T. unfurled its superior skill and speed, smothering the Steelers 44--6. Lockport was handed a 31--0 defeat as L.H.S. came back from the terrifying loss at the hands of N. T. Kenmore invaded Lackawanna Stadium, displayed their superlative power and left, grasping a 26--0 victory. Nunzio Collareno, Lackawanna's right tackle, received league honors and a position on the All-Star first team. LV. Under the skillful direction of john Devic, the junior Football Steelers finished the season with a even record of two wins and two defeats in regular games with Niagara Frontier teams. However, the purpose of the junior varsity squad is to produce varsity players and the season of '49 was eminently successful because the knowledge of fundamentals acquired by the squad this year means a good team next year. The Steelers commenced the season with a 46-45 hairline decision over the supposed- ly powerful North Tonawanda Lumberpacks. Diminutive joey Mattuci and Ted Antos sparked the locals, tallying 14 and 13 points respectively. In the second encounter, ,La Salle fell before the onslaught of the invading locals and came out on the short end of a 42-30 count. Ed Witczak, who had become the sparkplug of the quintet and reliable Pete Uglesich split 28 markers. The Section VI champion, Trott Vocational, was our next victim as they succumbed to a persistent attack, 36-32. But then the skies grew dark, the clouds began to thicken and before the squad could recover from the ferocity of the storm, the unblemished slate was stained with three losses. Lockport, Niagara Falls, the regular season champion, and Kenmore pounded out victories against a bewildered Steeler squad. The latter school wringing-out their only season win, a 38-37 overtime thriller. The only balm for our wounds was Witczak's accumulation of 43 points in these three losses. The second occasion the Steelers locked horns with North Tonawanda, produced an- other high-tension battle, but the locals limped from the court with a 49-48 victory. Against a pitiful La Salle quintet, the Steelers split the nets for a record-breaking 63 points, a new school record. The Varsity romped to a 59-47 decision over a highly-touted Tonawanda represen- tative, as Witczak and Uglesich tallied 19 each, and Ed Duda engineered the entire Steeler attack. - Then the squad's ego was deflated, as Trott administered a league record total of 79 markers versus our paltry 31. Niagara Falls and Lockport repeated their early-season performances, humbling the Steel City quintet 54-39 and 38-32 respectively. The brilliant floor play of Ed Smolarek, Dick Bolibrzuck, John Panzetta and Ed Duda was the highlight of these con- tests and Witczak's continuous point production stamped him as a center to be reckoned with. L.H.S. vindicated a mid-season upset, trouncing an undermanned Kenmore squad, 53-33, with Uglesich flipping in 17 tallies. The regular Niagara Frontier League season terminated in a heart-breaking 47-41 defeat by Tonawanda, that dashed our playoff aspirations. The bright side of the '49-'50 campaign was the two convincing triumphs marked up against our traditional O.L.V. rivals. O.L.V. capitulated to punishing 47-37 and 56-43 drubbings. Lanky Ed Witczak, a 6' 5 lad, whipped in a total of 33 markers and aided our school in gaining another title in a long series of intra-city championships. Speedy Jim Viterna, alert Dave Ortiz and crowd-pleasing Aldo Paolini did not re- ceive all the breaks but they kept the regulars constantly on their toes, as illustrated by the fact that of the 11 players on the squad, nine of them had an opportunity on the first five. JUNIOR VARSITY Not all was dismal in the Steeler camp. Our sparkling Junior Varsity, with Coach Raiman doing a brilliant job of tutoring, carried out an excellent achievement. The junior Steelers captured 15 contests and dropped but three, were in second place at the season's climax, copped the intra-city I.V. crown, and suffered their first championship playoff defeat in three years of competition. ECAUSE of overlapping sports seasons, we are unable to bring you this yearls baseball season, but we will recap last year's for you. The team, under Coach Bill Rade, was not expected to have a successful season, but they developed rapidly, starting the season with a 9-4 victory over La Salle on the latter's home diamond. North Tonawanda invaded Lackawanna and handed the host Steelers squad their first setback 5-3. Five hits and three errors in the first two innings supplied N. T. with the win- ning five runs. Trott entertained the L. H. S. Diamondeers and derailed them with a 13-3 loss. Joe Pie- tras pitched a 2-hit ball until the sixth frame, but the Engineers began to find range and col- lected 4 runs that inning and 5 the next. But there was light dawning on the Steeler nine as they came back to beat Lockport, a strong contender for the championship, 6-1. Ted Sroda allowed the Lockport nine only 5 scattered hits, while he and Tom Radich each collected triples to lead the Steeler attack. Again Lackawanna showed its true form, whipping Tonawanda 7-2 behind Sroda's 6-hit pitching. Jumbo .Tanak held the spotlight this night, hitting a home run with bases loaded and then diving into the left field bleachers to snap Walt Nepodreof's labeled home run ball. Lackawanna again fell back as Niagara Falls humbled them 9-5, to drop the Steelers to third place in the league standings. Ted Sroda, pitching almost every game for the Steelers, couldn't keep up the pace as N. F. bombarded him for 4-hits and 5 runs to win the ball game. Kenmore was next to humble L. H. S. as they laced out a 9-3 victory over the visiting Steel- ers. This game put the Steelers into a tie for fourth place, but a loss to Tonawanda, a one- hitter in the consolation game, dropped the Steeler's chances. Lackawanna was unfortunate in not making the playoffs, but a happy ending was in sight as Coleman Suto was named shortstop on the Niagara Frontier All-High league team. 70 TRACK 49 ROW 12 JOE KOWALSKI, DICK KLINCZAR, DON MOKSKI, JAMES DELANEY, JOHN PALCZEWSKI, TED TOMASIK, MIKE TUTKO. It is in the embryo stage, but with more student interest, it should be a major field in a few years. The 1950 season appears more engaging than in previous years. A majority of the '49 Varsity is returning and with these veterans serving as a durable nucleus, Mr. Hope, the instructor, will endeavor to mold a title contender. The '49 campaign was uneventful, as the locals absorbed sundry one-sided defeats. Ed Duda, the squad's outstanding miler, and Hal Girdlestone, one of the Niagara Frontier League's superior shotputters, managed to romp home ahead of the pack a few times but not enough to turn the tide. Another reliable trackman, Steve Cushion, exhibiting a flow- ing stride, excelled at the 440-yard sprint and did much to harass our opponents. Such is the fluctuating definition of golf. At Lackawanna, golf has been given a hearty welcome. It is a sport in its infancy but it has been the field of many of our recent athletic triumphs. The remarkable record includes twenty consecutive victories and is marred by a lone sectional defeat. The golf squad is unbeated in N. F. L. competition and with five seasoned participants returning, another spotless year is forecast. In the '49 season, with Mr. Korach appointed mentor, the quartet was sparked by the brilliant play of Capt. Stan Weislo. This year, the squad will be captained by Ted Antos, another outstanding shot-maker. Aiding their cap tain will be these seasoned performers: Sam Violanti, Ed Mach, Dan Kumiega, and John Dalessandro. A promising freshman crew is on hand to continue the prominence of our golf accomplishments in the next few years. We are counting on you, Ed Tokarz, Gene Piwowar and Richie May. '72 Vw adm SPORTS MANS!-IIP COIVIMITTE E 1 HE Niagara Frontier League, in order to bring about better relationship between the schools of the league, established the Sportsmanship Council. Year after year Lackawanna has been looked up to as a leader in this field. This year we were signally honored as Richard Daly, one of our students, was elected President of the Sportsmanship Council of the N. F. L. Other members from Lackawanna are Freshmen: Eugenia Mokski, and Gordon De Masig Sophomore Jack Motakg Juniors: Mike Tutko and Genevieve Jarlenskig and Seniors: Richard Daly and Marguarite Gomez.
