OUR FRITI-If FUHEUIUHD LACKAWANNA is in reality the City of Steel,,' for the coming of this great industry created an industrial city from a farmland. As the giant stacks rose along the waterfront, so also did the city' s life grow. Churches and schools became the early landmarks, and Lackawanna High came in 1906 to crown the limestone ridge on the slopes of which the city has been built. Steel is directly or indirectly a major factor in our daily, personal existence, in our growth and learning, and in our civic realities. The pages of this Annual will attempt to portray the role of the school in the pattern of our community life. just as steel is rolled and molded into desirable finished products, so do we hope that our days in Lacka- wanna High School have also shared in molding our character and citizenship. Studies, athletics, clubs, dances, and other school activi- ties pictured here have helped to form the mold which has shaped our ambitions, our hopes, and our resolves for the future. Let us pray that we shall be, like steel, firm and steadfast in our search for the good and true in life. Editor 2 Since it is reason which shapes and regulates all other things, it ought not to, be left in disorder Epictetus DEDICHTIUH FOR his many years of fruitful teaching, of clear-eyed devotion to duty, of inspired vision of his call- ing, We, the Senior Class of 1949, conscious that many former Lacka- wanna High classes join us warmly in this accolade, dedicate this, our yearbook, to a calm, resourceful, competent teacher --- Mr. Victor Smith We have all felt his sure ap- proach to science and have bene- fited greatly thereby. :'T:- QY X fs- .. 2 v ' - iagx - 2-rn?-Ev?-'R - -1- - :J- IH HIEHIURIHIH JOAN BROWN DIED DECEMBER 1948 FRANCIS SHOFFNER DIED AUGUST 1948 4 - Una -F 5 'Rr' ,EA --fw+ffs4f:'q' ,.7:v'.,.. The over-all results in the several types of sport engaged in might be termed mixed --some excellent, others good, still others merely promising. In football, highlights were: first night game for Steelers under South Park Stadium' s new lights, a successful season, 6 won but 2 lost, best team since 19383 two team members CHarold Girdlestone, john Dolacj chosen on the ' 'Buffalo Evening News all-star team of the Niagra Frontier League, this fine aggregation acquired a reputation as one of the biggest and best in Western New York high school competition, proof of team competence was the offer of athletic scholarships to several players from various colleges. In basketball, these facts stood out: although not one of LHS' s best seasons C4 won, 10 lost in the NF Leaguel , OLV Academy was defeated twice for the city championship, the team, com- posed entirely of underclassmen, will return intact for next season' s play, the LV. squad, league winners and playoff champs for the second consecutive year Qrecord: 17 won, 1 lostl, will bolster future LHS teams, our team is in a building up process and the future appears bright. In hockey, inaugurated in the past year, and in the first year of competition the squad won a Buffalo Muny League championship, another fine addition to LHS' s already strong athletic program. In golf, rated the finest high school team in Western New York, LHS captured the NF League, District and Zone V1 championships--93 of a possible 96 League points! 58 r f vs 9 29? ,Qs ,. DRIVER TRAINING IN SCHOOL LACKAWANNA High this year recog- nized the widespread interest in the young automobile driver by being one of Western New York' s first high schools to introduce a Driver Training course. The good re- sults are already apparent, not only in the first crops of well trained auto op- erators but also in the constant attention to the good citizenship of safe, sane driv- ing the course emphasizes for Lacka- wamma' s many young motorists. UNDER the able direction of Messers. Doyle and Ficzere, aided by the permanent loan of a fine car from South Park Chevro- let, the course has been well geared to achieve its worthy purpose ------------ good driving on safe streets by motorists of tomorrow. It is expected that each year the number of applicants will be increased to enlarge the scope of this excellent pro- ject. 70 NH ADVERT: EME in xi- -A ,., fgqnru-: . - . ......- -3,5-j: :'1f'Z, .,.isQ,: - .
